Drew Brees was horrible prior to that year, and the Chargers had no idea that he was going to have a breakout year when they drafted Eli Manning and traded for Rivers in 2004 (that's why they drafted a QB with the #1 pick). In Brees' first 3 seasons (2001 - 2003) his combined stats were 29 TD, 31 INT, 5,613 yards passing (200 ypg), 59.4% completion rate. THAT is the guy that Rivers sat behind h

It could also be because none of the other teams (Indy, Washington, Cleveland) have a starting caliber QB, and Miami has at least 1 in Garrard, and maybe 2 with Moore. I think if Miami had the other QBs those teams have Tannehill would be the starter on opening day too.

Just an FYI - Philip Rivers was the overall #4 draft pick in 2004, and started the season #3 on the Chargers' depth chart behind Drew Brees and Doug Flutie. He appeared in a total of 2 games that season.

"10 for 13 for 11 yards??" It was 10 for 13 for 114 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT.

There were a couple times during the Wanny era when we had the #1 power ranking. A lot of good that did us. The fans of every team that has a low pre-season ranking say "but we're better than last year. We've added X, Y, and Z, and got rid of A, B, and C." The only thing that matters is what happens on the field on Sept. 9 and beyond. Power rankings Schmower rankings - who cares.

ChryenB- I'm not sure of the law on this but - he was in prison for 6 years, and out at least a year with the ankle monitoring bracelet, so I'm guessing it's been at least 7 years since she perjured herself. Wouldn't that be beyond the statute of limitations in this case, and so no charges, criminal or civil, could be brought against her? Personally I'm amazed that he has been able to main

I think Akili Smith from Oregon started even fewer games. One year starter in college if I remember. One year starter in the pros too I think. Some people seem overly concerned that RT was a wide receiver first at TAM. He was a QB in high school and went to TAM to be a QB, but was stuck behind a guy that was supposedly a Heisman candidate. He volunteered to play WR so he could contribute,

I don't think Tannehill is sitting 2-3 years. I think he is sitting 1 year. He may not even sit the full first season - I can see him starting mid-way through this year, depending on how fast he develops. The thing is, he will not be starting at the beginning of the season, and I don't think it's a big deal if he sits his whole rookie year.

Oh come on; don't be unreasonable. The posters on this board who have seen 5 minutes of SportsCenter highlights of Tannehill are waaaay more qualified to evaluate his potential as an NFL QB than Brandt.

QBs that sat at least a year: Phillip Rivers Tom Brady Matt Schaub Josh Freeman (started mid-way through rookie season due to injuries to the starter) Tony Romo Of those, Rivers and Freeman were top 10 picks. Remember, Drew Brees had done nothing in the NFL, which prompted SD to draft Eli Manning w/ the #1 pick (that was then swapped w/ the Giants for Rivers). Freeman was behind I thi

Bill Walsh had a very interesting, and successful draft philosophy. He didn't believe in trading up or down in the draft. He didn't worry about whether a player was drafted "too high." He drafted solely on whether or not he believed that player would be successful and contribute to what the team was trying to do. That was his only criteria. He would say that in a few years none of

I voted #3; as A&O said, the only logical choice. There does need to be another option on here for some people: Will be unhappy no matter who the Dolphins draft.

ChyrenB, I don't post very often, but I just so strongly disagree with your position that I have to. Signing Manning does not hurt the Phins in any way. They still keep their draft picks, which they can use on another QB this year, or next year, or the year after, to learn under Manning, they still have Moore as a more than capable backup in the unlikely chance that Manning gets hurt again, and

As punishment for the Saints bounty system, Roger Goodell will award the Patriots an additional 1st round draft pick this year.

Oops - getting my miserable seasons mixed up. The only quality QBs available in the draft after the 1-15 season were Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco. I'm still not completely sold on either one being a franchise QB; Ryan has still never won a playoff game despite all the talent around him, and Flacco is still very inconsistent. They were the only 2 QBs taken in the first round that year. Neither mig

If healthy, I wouldn't mind signing Manning at all this year if he is willing to take only a 2 - 3 year contract. Trade down and draft a QB in the 1st round (maybe Tannehill), and have him learn behind Manning for 2 years, like Rodgers did behind Favre. We would become instantly competitive, and have our franchise QB for the future. The only health issue with Manning is his neck - remember,

By McQueary's own account, he did not tell Paterno exactly what he saw, as he didn't think it was "appropriate" to give the details to someone of Paterno's age and stature. All Paterno had to go on was sugar-coated hearsay regarding an assistant coach that had retired 3 years prior to the incident (Sandusky no longer worked for Paterno). In hindsight, Paterno admitted he should have d

Some other journeymen quarterbacks: Rich Gannon (4 time pro bowler, NFL MVP) Jeff Garcia (4 time pro bowler) Kurt Warner (4 time pro bowler, 2x all pro, 2x MVP) Earl Morrall (2 time pro bowler, 3 time SB champion, Comeback POY) Sometimes these "journeymen" QBs just need to be in the right system to succeed.

I just don't understand the big love affair with Flynn. He could be the next Steve Young. Or he could be the next AJ Feeley. Or Kevin Kolb. Or Matt Cassell. He is as big an unknown as drafting a QB. I wouldn't want to give up the farm for him, only to find out he's the next Clint Longley.

Jon Gruden had a career .540 winning percentage, which translates to between 8-8 and 9-7 on average. Bill Cowher had a .623 winning percentage, which translates to almost exactly 10-6 every year. Even Bill Belichik only wins on average just

I think we can all agree that it's better to have a franchise QB than a Sanchize QB.

I just don't know why you are so negative about Moore. Yes, he can improve, and a coach like Gruden can certainly help do that. He's also been one of the top rated QBs in the league the 2nd half of the season.
