I don't believe in putting all your eggs in one basket. We have depth at every OTHER position, why not QB? You must realize that most often backups play here-and-there, rather than replace the starter for the rest of the season. What if Henne gets clocked in a game and has to go out for a series? Do you want Pat White coming in, throwing an INT that becomes 6, and blowing the entire game?? Or, would you rather have Penny or Thigpen come in and keep the momentum on our side? I can't believe ANY team would hang their entire season on one player.

It's rare but, it's happened before, starter goes down and the back-up comes in and takes the team to the SB. It happened to the patriots and the rams. A solid back-up is essential.

Quality back-up QB's will be on the market to pick up. So if I can trade Thigpen for a 4th. Then pick up a Leinart who might be cut and lose nothing........I can live with that.

Or whoever, there will be a quality QB or two on the free agent market in two weeks.

I feel much more comfortable having a backup that has has gone through TC and has run your plays in a real game than someone coming in cold (like Leinart). I suppose, though, as long as we have Penny OR Thigpen, we should be ok.

I don't agree. Remember Matt Cassell? The Pats just barely missed the playoffs without Brady. If not for a miraculous season by us, they would have been right in the thick of things.

I believe with our O-Line, RBs, WRs, and Nolan as the DC, we'd make the playoffs with Thigpen, or Penny, at the helm.

make the playoffs with a back-up QB, get blown out in Rd 1. whooptie friggin doo!!! That really gets everyone excited.

Instead we could trade Thigpen or Pennington get a 4th round pick or so. And continue to build towards the future when Henne were to return (in this situation)

A 4th round pick. As you said: Whoptie friggin doo!!! Is a 4th round pick really going to be that special key that gets us to the Superbowl?! HARDLY!

Yeah, well, Zach Thomas was a 5th rounder and Tom Brady was a 6th rounder. You and I know those kinds of picks are few and far between. These are the 4th rounders we've picked up in the last 10 years:

2001: (none)
2002: Randy McMichael (decent starting TE)
2003: (none)
2004: Will Poole (scrub)
2005: Travis Daniels (scrub)
2006: Joe Toledo (injury prone..no longer with team)
2007: Paul Soliai (backup NT?)
2008: Shawn Murphy (no longer with team)
2009: Brian Hartline (starting WR, for now)
2010: A.J. Edds (injured)

For every Brandon Marshall there are 100 Shawn Murphy's drafted in the 4th. None of these guys are game breakers. None of these guys would put us over the top. I DO have to admit we've gotten more hits in the 4th round than the 1st round in the past 10 years, though.

My point is ODDS ARE Thigpen will be more valuable to us this year as a back up QB than a 4th or 5th round pick will be to us next year.

valuable backup for what? An 8-8 team? Or a 9-7 team?

Then he walks for nothing and we get nothing in return. If we trade him, get a 4th round pick, and in WORST CASE scenerio Henne goes down we go 6-10 or something its the same as going 8-8 in most peoples eyes

Go back and ready my earlier posts. Backups often come in for a series or 2 when the starter gets banged up. A good backup will win you the game, or, at least, NOT lose it for you. Our backups played many downs when we had Marino long before Dan's achilles injury. A valuable back up is a guy that can come in cold and win you the game.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Its kinda of funny - we know Warner was better than Trent Green. But I always wondered about Bledsoe/Brady. If Bellicheck had taken over 5 years earlier would Bledsoe have won a ring? Impossible to tell because Bledsoe was heading toward the end of his career when Brady took over.

Tell that to Trent Dilfer and The Baltimore Ravens!

Hhhhhmmmm. A couple days ago, I would have told you that there is no way we trade Thigpen. However, they didn't play him last night and White did. I heard Sparano say he wasn't going to play his 4th quarterback in this game. Could it be they wanted to protect his value for a trade? Something might be on the table and they didn't want him getting hurt.

You lost me there. Dilfer was a caretaker on that Baltimore team. They won with Defense. Pretty much any QB that didn't make critical mistakes could have taken that team to the Superbowl.

I think Arizona might come calling for a QB soon. I am guessing Pennington. That is a team built to win now, especially in that soft division

hmmm, funny no more talk about pat white being traded? how about we talk about how good he looked against the dirty birds. I believe he hit most of his reads and showed the mobility that I keep saying separates him from all other qb's on this roster, again "he is a change of pace guy that you can bring in even if henni and penni are healthy"

And yes, for the haters I do believe that he hit the side of the barn quite a few times cool smiley

lets go pat white!

Because no team in their right mind would give up ANYTHING for Pat White.

And he looked good vs Atlanta?? He completed 4 passes in total garbage time against scrubs

this is the NFL, just because you are on the 2 or 3rd team does not mean that you are a scrub. There are alot of 2nd and 3rd teamers (or undrafted players) who are better than alot of first rounders...

Tyler Thigpen is a very good running QB. He led the NFL in rushing for a QB in 2008. And he can actually throw the ball. He is a better option in the Wildcat than White because he is a threat to do damage in the passing game.

I think pat white is clearly the odd man out in this bunch. Thigpen clearly has more upside than white.
