I'm thinking of reasons why Pat White played so little. I didn't expect him to play much, but 4 plays? So I'm wondering, is the team trying to keep him from getting injured, or trying to hide some bigger flaws in hopes of trading him?

They said they wanted to get a bunch of tape of Thigpen, which means I think the plan was to showcase THigpen. Sparano said he was going to put Pat in around the 6:30 mark but, he decided against putting him in cold with such bad field position. I expect it was just the situation, and you will see Pat get his shot in the next game.... Now what he will do with it, is anyone's guess..

I could see trading Thigpen as the other option. Which begs lots of questions.
I know this has been discussed ad nauseum, but Right now Pennington is hurting and so if we trade Thigpen, our #2 QB becomes Pat White. I just don't see that.

I don't think they are keeping him out to negotiating the round. Obviously it would be a late round pick.
Pat White is likely going to get cut, and there may be multiple teams looking to replace their 3rd QB with the guy. He would be a 3rd QB upgrade for some teams. Some teams are willing to part with late round picks to ensure a player doesn't go to waivers. Maybe Miami was contacted by one who is considering making a change, but hasn't pulled the trigger yet.

I'll go one step further. Even if he does perform miracles, he won't be on this team. The only way he stays is if Penny PUPs or Thiggy gets traded for something good.

I don't know who would offer a 5th or 6th for Pennington. He is an unknown quantity this year, as no one knows if his shoulder is really OK enough to play. That, and their are some veteran qbs out there (Jeff Garcia for one) that can be had for no draft picks. Maybe some team might get desparate if a QB gets knocked out for the year, but for now, I don't think so.

What exactly have to seen from White that suggests he's EVER going to be an NFL-caliber QB? His NFL career will be over soon. That ship sailed when he and our F.O. decided to keep him at QB rather than trying him out at WR, etc..

If Pennington's arm was back, he'd be worth more than that, but at this stage I'm not sure he's worth anything. The guy just isn't ready to jump into a game and play.

Same situation? I count one more surgery and one more nearly entire season not playing. Those things add up. I suppose if some desperate team wants to offer us a 5th rounder (as remote as that sounds to me), it may seem tempting, but Penny is still more valuable to us as a mentor for Henne and "unofficial assistant QB coach" than sitting on the bench, or on the PUP list, for some other team (because that's what would happen if we traded him).

Of course its speculation! Saying something may happen before it actually happens is the definition of speculation. And being 100% sure of anything (even Pat White getting cut) is foolish, though I wouldn't bet a dime that Pennington will be traded (call me 99.9% sure on this).
Before training camp, I'd give equal probability to these three scenarios to start the season:
1. Keep Henne, Penni, Thiggy. PW gets released/traded
2. Keep Henne, Penni, PW. Thiggy gets traded
3. Keep Henne, Thiggy, PW. Pennington goes on PUP.
With reports that Penni is throwing OK in practice, I now think the probability breaks down like this:
65% 1. Keep Henne, Penni, Thiggy. PW gets released/traded.
30% 2. Henne, Penni, PW. Thiggy gets traded.
5% 3. Henne, Thiggy, PW. Pennington goes on PUP (now only if Penni tweeks his shoulder in practice or PS game)
Of course this is purely speculative and pulled these numbers out of my arse. I only based this on what I gather from news reports, the first PS game, and past observation of how the Trifecta works things. We'll see in the coming weeks.

I read an article speculating that Thigpen's extended time on the PS #1 game was to showcase his skills for a trade partner. I don't buy it. If we intended on developing White, then he'd get every chance available to play against another pro team. PS games are too valuable for development of a young QB to waste on the trade demands of another football team. White is as good as gone.
come on guys the break down is simple, i know all of you are pat white haters but he is not going anywhere. How can you use a 2nd round on a guy and then cut him the next year? look at vernon golston, he has dont nothing and is still there.
Further more what does thigpen add that henni does not? these guys are basically the same person except i think thigpen is more mobile, in otherwords you dont gain anything from keeping thigpen.
Roster: henni, penni, white (unless he does something to seriously change that or get injured in preseason)

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on this board. What? Do we paste 2 QBs together to make one bigger, better, Super QB? NO. Thigpen is a backup. If his skills are similar to Henne, then all the better! It makes the adjustment for the rest of the team easier if Henne gets hurt and Thigpen comes in.

Thigpen is going no-place. If the report I read the other day is true and our coaches think he is the next "ROMO" you can bank on them NOT trading Thigpen.
I don't think Pennington or White have any trade value at all. One has a dead arm the other flat out can't play. I think at the end of the day Pat White gets the ax.
Sparano didn't even mention Pat White when discussing which QBs would play against JAX. If White gets sent in for the last series again, he is as good as gone. If the team is only willing to play him for a few slop downs at the end of a Pre-Season game, then it is clear they have no interest in developing him as a QB.
I can see White hooking on as a third QB for someone, but just as good of a chance he'll be in the CFL.

uh, did you see him play last year? true he had that one good run against the Pats but the rest of the time he ran the ball he did little good. plus when he threw the ball he couldn't hit the side of the barn, so saying he didn't throw any ints last year is just laughable--his passes were so far off not even the DBs had a chance at them. I just don't get why the team doesn't try to get something out his athletic ability, and try him at another position.
but I agree with you about thigpen. I think he could be really good and he played great with KC his only year as a starter (his numbers were excellent and he shredded us) and he flashed really good (and really bad) things in his only appearance with us last year.
