Which of these free agent qb's can challenge Chad henne

Personally i don't think none of these qb's are Worth picking up are trading for.

Top Quarterbacks

source footballs future.com

Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) – It’s been four years since Matt Hasselbeck has been a statistically good quarterback when he posted a 91.4 QB Rating in 2007. However, there’s been a clear drop-off in the level of talent on the Seahawks roster since then as well. Hasselbeck may be the best back-up option on the free agent market on a team with talent, like Jon Kitna in Dallas. Though it’s not out of the realm of possibilities, I don’t expect Pete Carroll’s team to re-sign him, but instead go in a younger direction.

Matt Moore (CAR) – The collapse of the Panthers still remains an enigma to me. In the past, the team responded well to Matt Moore at quarterback. He fitted nice passes and protected the football, two things he absolutely didn’t do this year. To top it off, he suffered a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder in November, which won’t allow him to throw until March. He’s played the back-up role well in the past, so it seems that’s what he’s best suited to do.

Alex Smith (SF) – Many often wonder how Alex Smith would have panned out if he had a stable offensive coordinator for his entire career, but he’s been plagued by offensive changes like no other young quarterback. He’s looked okay in short bursts, but hasn’t been able to sustain success. His potential has been eaten and his interest around the league may be miniscule, but he has some talent where he could sit on the bench for a couple years and become a decent veteran back-up. His days in San Francisco, though, are surely numbered.

Matt Leinart (HOU) – Given the Cardinals’ quarterback woes, it sure seems like they made a mistake in cutting Matt Leinart before the regular season, especially given his 78.6 completion percentage this preseason. His biggest problem was his inability, or rather unwillingness to push the ball down the field, which ultimately caused Wisenhunt to pull the plug on Leinart. If he can find a quarterback coach that can get him over the hump, he may still have some value as a starting quarterback. He’s one of the wildcards in this free agent class.

Other Notable Free Agents:
Marc Bulger (BAL)
Todd Collins (CHI)
Caleb Hanie (CHI)
Brady Quinn (DEN)
Drew Stanton (DET)
Trent Edwards (JAC)
Luke McCown (JAC)
Brodie Croyle (KC)
Chad Pennington (MIA)
Tyler Thigpen (MIA)
Tarvaris Jackson (MIN)
Jim Sorgi (NYG)
Kellen Clemens (NYJ)
Kyle Boller (OAK)
Bruce Gradkowski (OAK)
Dennis Dixon (PIT)
Billy Volek (SD)
Troy Smith (SF)
Kerry Collins (TEN)

I think we better stick with Henne, and let Brandstater try.

No need in bringing in any of them, there not much better than Henne.

Why spend the money, and take a roster spot.

I think it will be Kellen Clemens. He has experience in Daboll's system.

I agree. But, the only 2 QBs on the market that Daboll has coached are Clemens and Seneca Wallace.

I hope we don't give up high draft picks for Kevin Kolb, whose career stats are no better than Henne's, despite playing with a much more explosive supporting cast. Same goes for Matt Flynn, who everyone loves based on 3/4 of one game. Matt Hasselbeck was worse than Henne last year, and has always been a west coast offense guy. Bulger is made of glass, and is another west coast guy.

Can we get Cincy to take Brandon Marshall and Phillip Merling for Carson Palmer? If so, get it done.

Palmer for a 4th, or swap for henne.

Volek can give us the 2 years we need.

Bulger

David Garrard might be moved?
Vince Young in the wildcat would be interesting. Vick has stepped up his game second time around

Hanie looked pretty confident in the playoffs, never heard of him before that

I agree! What have we got to lose at this point? Give Vince a shot. If he fails..then we're no worse off than we were last year at QB.

Palmer's done. He's old and damaged goods. No dice.

Volek=another A.J.Feely. No trades!

Old, but would fill a spot on the bench as our #2 or #3.

Again...NO TRADES!

I'd go for Young, but let's wait until he's released.

No F-ing way do I want this cold-blooded killer on our team.

I don't expect Ireland are sparano will pick up a veteran qb , unless it's to back up chad. They will try to prove to us fans that henne is the answer. I don't see them bringing in any competition.

Vince Young has a career passer rating of 75.7. Chad Henne's is 75.3. Young has completed 58% of his passes, compared to 61% for Henne. Vince Young has 42 career TD passes and 42 career INT. And he's fumbled the ball a whopping 36 times in 54 career games. And by all accounts, Young is not a guy who studies film, he doesn't work hard, and he's not a leader. And he has mental stability issues. Stay far, far away from him.

Im ok with giving Henne one more chance.

Two reason's why its our best move.

1} If he succeeds then everything is gravy train and we are basking in joy!!!!smileys with beer.

2} If he sucks the big one, then we have a MUCH MUCH better chance at Barkely which I don't care for, and Luck which I much rather persue.

Like I starting to say lets just enjoy the season, because one of these two things will bound to happen!!!!smileys with beer

So, what if he does OK, we pull out 9 wins and back into the playoffs? What then? My fear is he'll be just "good enough" for the staff to be happy with him. That's pretty much been our mantra ever since Dan retired. QB's have been caretakers, and Henne can probably do that fine...but I don't want that kind of QB anymore!!!!

I'm okay with giving him one more chance also but geez........does that mean that we don't hedge our bets when a prospect like Mallett drops into our laps.

If Henne works out, we might only be dealing with the same situation, (only in reverse) as Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers in San Diego.

If Henne doesn't work out, we have our QB of the future.

Treasure provided a link wherein some guy made (I'll give it) the respectable argument that in Miami Mallett would be under the type of pressure that may make his off-the-field behavior come out by competing with Henne whereas in New England, he would understand his place at number 2 and would be under less of the pressure that might cause him to go bad.

That's a good point.

But the only thing it fails to take into account is an early and serious injury to Brady.

If that happens, Mallet is in the same place (only worse) than in Miami (because in Miami the fans are already disappointed in their QB and will be willing to cut a rookie some slack but in NE the fans love their QB and won't tolerate less in a performance.)

I don't agree. I just think this was a horrible draft class for QBs. Some teams got desperate, and took these guys too high.

Newtwon- only 1 year at the Division 1 level. Wasn't asked to read defenses, with his history of academic issues, you wonder how easily he will be able to learn at the NFL level. Struggled with accuracy at the combine and his pro day. No experience in a pro style offense. History of "run first" QBs is not very good.

Gabbert- didn't play in an NFL style offense, and rarely took snaps under center. Sometimes delivers the ball sidearm or 3/4, which could mean his mechanics will have to be overhauled. Takes off and runs at the first hint of pressure. Wasn't asked to read the whole field.

Locker- not an accurate passer from the pocket. Nothing else really matters. If you can't pass from the pocket, you won't succeed in the NFL.

Ponder- He doesn't have an NFL arm. He can't make all the throws. And he's already had arm surgeries.

Dalton- He doesn't have an NFL arm. Universal Draft put together a video of his throws of more than 15 yards. It's amazing how many of these are badly underthrown.

Kaepernick- great upside, smart kid, great arm. But, played in an inferior conference, and did not run an NFL style offense. He is another "run first" QB. His delivery is very, very long, and his mechanics will have to be overhauled. Didn't take snaps under center, and needs a lot of work on his footwork. One of his own receivers says he's not an accurate passer.

Mallett- great arm, best pure passer in the draft. Admitted drug user. Very, very slow, and immobile in the pocket. Immature and not known as a leader or hard worker. All he had to do to be a first round pick was get his act together for 4 months before the draft. And he couldn't do it. He blew off a meeting with the Panthers and was 40 minutes late for a meeting with the Titans. He cost himself millions of dollars. That tells you all you need to know about where his head is at.

If you look at all of these guys, and then look at Henne in 2008, none of them have significantly more upside than Henne did as a rookie. None of them are well suited to play now. And Ireland/Sparano don't have years to groom a new QB.

I don't think that not taking a QB was an endorsement of Henne. I think it was a question of why waste a pick on a guy who is not going to beat out Henne for at least a couple of years? Because, they only have a year or two to get this thing turned around. I think they will bring in a veteran to compete with Henne. And it could be a high profile guy that will be expected to replace Henne. But, there was not one QB in this draft that I thought represented an upgrade over Henne, at least in 2011 or 2012.

Yeah you know what the Jet's got the best QB in that draft called McElroy, who has a underated arm, smartest of the bunch, played in a pro style offense I think I don't know lol, won a BCS title, and has hot sex with fat chicks.

Rex Ryan know's talented guy's I will give him that, and he knows he got a steal with McElroy.

I guarantee you why he picked him, was because of his comment about Newton that McElroy made.

God I hate when Im right!!!! Ryan know's that spark in a guy, and thats Rex Ryans best quality to bring the best out of firey men.

God I really want to see McElroy play!!

Yeah, we need to focus on the "BIG 3" of next year.

Andrew Luck, Landry Jones, and Matt Barkley are all projected to be top 5 picks next year.

We need to do whatever it takes to go up and get one of them. They are better than any QB that came out this year.
