He was largely blamed by the Baltimore Colts fans for the loss of that game in the SuperBowl to Joe Willy Namath and was basically regarded at that time for a failure.
You're right. He was not fired but was hired by us.
Your point was whenever has a coach been in trouble after losing a small number of games.
My answer was that the Colts fans wanted Shula's head after a SB loss.
Of course those were the days when an NFL team had no business losing to an AFL team but that's another subject.
In fact, I worship Don Shula. I'd give up my house to have him back coaching as he was in his prime.
But BASICALLY IT'S MY FAULT FOR EVEN ANSWERING AN IDIOTIC QUESTION, I brought up that Philbin had never had a HEAD coaching job and you brought up the ridiculous point that a lots of coaches have had first HEAD coaching jobs.
Of course, everybody has to start somewhere but my point, which has been conveniently overlooked, was that Don Shula was A YOUNG coach when he got his first coaching job.
Philbin has been knocking around football for quite a while and this is his first head coaching job.
Here is his coaching history
Team(s) as a coach/administrator
1984-1985 Tulane (GA)
1986-1987 WPI (OL)
1988-1989 USMMA (OL)
1990-1993 Allegheny College (OC/OL)
1994 Ohio (OL)
1995-1996 Northeastern (OC/OL)
1997-1998 Harvard (OC/OL)
1999-2002 Iowa (OL)
2003 Green Bay Packers (Asst OL)
2004-2005 Green Bay Packers (TE/Asst OL)
2006 Green Bay Packers (OL)
2007-2011 Green Bay Packers (OC)
2012-present Miami Dolphins (HC)
.........and in other news, the success rate of criminal prosecutions are up 50/60% in the last few years, the head DA has a theory but refused to share it on camera for fear of hurting an ex employees feelings............

What could the fact that Shula was fired in Baltimore after losing a Super Bowl possibly have to do with the fact that he (along with Belichick, Tomlin, and a bunch of other guys) had ZERO head coaching experience before they were hired as a HC in the NFL?

I can't tell you what Chyren was thinking (either can he apparently), but he thought it ironic that you brought up a coach that was "fired" after losing the Super Bowl, when discussing the fate of our own Joe Philbin after the season.........maybe he thought you bolstered his point?.........problem was, he wasn't fired by the Colts

Again dolphaholic, you dishonestly post as if you had not read my intervening posts. You know the Truth has me blocked so he can't read where I admitted I was wrong. That's dishonest and low.
Again, if you lived through the 1960's, you know that Shula basically left the Colts in disgrace. Yes, we hired him away. YES EVEN THE COLTS CHARGED US WITH TAMPERING AND WON.
But that doesn't change the fact that after one SuperBowl loss for a young coach, Shula took heat and was not favored by Baltimore fans.
But why did this all come up?????
Because someone asked me basically and paraphrasing "When has a young coach ever been fired when meeting success in his early career". The reason I brought up Don Shula was because the Baltimore fans wanted to run him out on a rail after he lost the SuperBowl to the New York Jets.
That's a fair answer to the question although, no, he wasn't fired but if the fans in Baltimore had their say, he would have been.

The 47 yard FG is the message board gift that keeps on giving.
Asking a kicker to make a 47 yard FG should not shake his confidence. If anything, it should say "hey, I know you can do this". If Carpenter was shaken by that then why would we want him. Our rookie kicker isn't phased by any kick he is asked to make.
I wasn't the one that brought it up, Northeast. Just clarifying after someone else brought it up.
And again, I'd rather rely on a guy to make a 60 yard field goal than to put the same guy in a position of having to make a 48 yarder by not trying to get him closer. but again that' "keeps on giving."
Thanks, buddy, that's THE ONLY REASON that it comes out.
And you know what, I'll be there rooting for us to win every remaining game INCLUDING THE SuperBowl which would in effect INSURE Philbin's staying as long as he wants to.

See that everyone? He tells us the reason he's a Dolphin fan is because he went to Purdue with Griese. But it's REALLY because both he and the Phins have perfect records!
whenever I see a thread I haven't looked at in awhile that has gone to 6 pages I just KNOW there is some ChyrenB/Truth/holic bizness going on. Love it! And when the last post is a "JC" post there's a better than 75% chance it's closed. I guess JC has mellowed in his old age....

No more, berk, I'm not gonna fan the flames on this thread and get it closed but you're right. When you see a 5 page thread between me and the Truth and the last post is JC, 99% the thread is closed. LOL.
JC is probably a bit like me and likes to follow a thread that makes the time go by quicker for the week between Dolphin games. Can't wait to see what material you guys come up with during the two week stretch of the bye week.
This thread goes on and on like the Energizer bunny. LOL
ChryenB--glad you got the pomposity thing cleared up. Disliking Philbin is your right for whatever reason...can't argue nor do I want to over that.
I must reiterate though, people are picked for important positions based on the perceived notion that they have the aptitude to do the job. That opportunity is never one where the person making the decision thinks the person being selected may just get by, but is optimistic that they well excel at the position. Smart HC coaches, surround themselves with top assistants and hopefully good players. Sherman may be the weakest link aside from a pathetically poor O-line.
As for the Dolphins getting Don Shula--it's moot--as he became the winningest coach in NFL history. That accomplishment will not be surpassed.
