It is weird that the Harvard study has all 4 AFC east teams in the top ten of the first stat.... Is that even possible?

I suppose it is if you believe that a superior D-line is the only really important part of a football team, but then..what is N.E. doing in there?

Last year on offense, we were 14th in yards and 11th in scoring. Hartline disappeared and Clay was average. The passing offense was basically, Mike Wallace and Jarvis Landry. Landry has such a great work ethic and desire that I fully expect him to improve. The more I see from him, the more I think he will become a star. Now add Parker, Stills, Cameron and Jennings and it gets ridiculous. I don't know that you could find 5 receivers on a team anywhere in the league with as much talent.

Our defense was top 5 until week 10 and then fell apart in the run defense. Detroit had the #1 rush defense in the league and we know have their starting DT's.

I could easily see this team with a top 5 offense and a top 5 defense. How often have you seen a team with those rankings not make the playoffs? Not win a playoff game? Even with a top 10 on both sides....but I think we will be better.

Unless the Patriots have some hidden talent in CB, I think there rule in the division is over. They basically released the every cb from last year except for super bowl hero Bulter (a rookie who barely played). Not having 3 good cb can detrimental to a team success. Rebuilding the entire secondary is going to take a miracle. Every game is going to be track meets for the Patriots.

It helps that every other AFC east has a great DL, Brady is going to take a beating this year.

NE has always found a way to negate a teams strength. They killed the Lions last year (and several other teams) by using the quick passing game to negate the pass rush. We must find a way to take this aspect away from them this year.

Every year they look to be susceptible in one area but they always find a way to compensate for it. This year it looks as though they are trying to build up the ) and D-line (as they ignore the DB's). They drafted a 1st round DT in Malcom Brown as well as a DE in Trey Flowers. They also drafted Tre Jackson and Shaq Mason on the o-line.

They were 9th (yards) in rush defense last year and 8th in points allowed rushing.

I personally don't think that is enough of a pass rush to help out the secondary. Chandler Jones is ok but often injured. Not a lot of depth there IMO. They will probably have to blitz with a talented group of LB's.

You are right about their secondary. They are very thin and not much for starters at CB either. How are they going to match up with 5 of our receivers?

Last year we ran the ball down their throats in week 1 (Moreno). Miami defense shut them out in the second half as well.

In week 15, we couldn't run at all and they shut us out in the second half. Gronk and Edelman killed us.

This year we play them in weeks 8 and 17. I don't see them running on us at all. I also see us scoring more points this year. I don't think they match up well enough to stop our offense. I think it comes down to how we stop the quick passing game.

The problem as I see it...

It is left up to the individual CB in Miami as to what technique they use...press or off coverage. Our CB's do not like to press. If we can't press them and throw off the timing of these quick throws, we will split the series. If we can jam Edelman and hold Gronk to 50 yards and 1 td, we will sweep them. Gronk scored 1 td and 96 yards on only 3 catches last year. We can't give up those big plays. Edelman had 88/1 and 95/0 yards last year. They put 41 points on us last year in the second meeting and only 20 in the first.

The Patriot under Belichick post season success can be pretty much be correlated with a very good secondary play. Ty Law, Rodney Harrison, Assante Samuel, Aquib Talib, Devin McCourty (as a S), and Darrell Revis. The late season secondary injuries correspond to the derailed the 2005, 2006, 2012 & 2013 playoff seasons as well. The Patriots however were able to still win regular season games with the teams with average to poor secondary play.

I agree that the Belichick is very good with neutralizing a teams strength, but there is a big difference between playing a close games with a good defense and having to play catch up with a porous defense. The quick short passing games isn't going to consistently win games if the team is having to regularly score.

Incompetent players at critical positions in football are very hard to overcome. If you look at the 2007 Miami Dolphins, the season start off with a rash of injuries at the safety positions, same of the early games losses were direct related to incompetent play at safety. (the later half of the season they lost games because of incompetent QB play) The 2007 Dolphins were far more talented on paper than 1-15 record indicated. I don't the Patriots aren't going to go 1-15, but I think this is the least talented CB group in the NFL and the Patriots have ever had under Belichick.

Maybe I am counting my chickens before they hatch, but I really like my chances with Miami against New England this year. I predict that this is the year that the Patriots reign over the AFC East is over. Maybe I am delirious from waiting for the football season to start.

The Phins have a 12 win roster, but only a 5 win HC.

That usually makes the win total about right in the middle.

Wow...That means he overachieved every year for three years straight and the players underachieved. The theory might need some work.

No. They pick him up and he weighs them down.

Can't be more clear than that.

i think what they're saying, joe, is that if the phins win 12 games it will be despite philbin but if they don't joe gets all of the blame.

that's convenient.

I understand what they were "trying" to say. I was just busting balls and pointing out the theory was flawed.

If a 5 win coach wins 8 games. He overachieved.

I also don't understand the thinking that we have only had 1 clown for a coach since Shula.

Cameron, Wanny, Saban...

And philbin is going to continue to get slammed by a lot of people until he proves he can be a head coach in this league.

He made some coaching mistakes last year that other coaches would not make.

The point is that he has been an average coach thus far, not a scrub. Those are the facts. He has preached from day one about the type of team/players he wants in Miami. Well, now he has has it. The whiners who didn't buy in were sent packing.

That's not to say he isn't on the hot seat. He is..and no more excuses.

It takes time to build a consistent team. Sure, some teams do it faster but that is not the "norm". If it were that easy, every team would be 8-8 every year. Not everyone inherits a SB team like Mike Tomlin or is fortunate enough to find a franchise QB in the 3rd round like Seattle or 6th like Belichick.

I believe Philbin is smart enough to learn and get better as a HC. We would have been in the playoffs last year if not for injuries at KEY positions and paying for past management mistakes like keeping aging players with no plan to put depth behind them.

Personnel-wise, I don't think we could have done much better over the last 2 years given what we had to work with....A different player here or there??? Sure... but I believe people will look back after the season and see how this team was built just like what you saw from SF and Seattle.

I love the talent I see here. I think you will see some of these young players grow by leaps and bounds over the next few years. I also think the depth is MUCH better than it's been in a decade or so...

Future starters....Jordan Tripp, Walt Aikens, Jamil Douglas, Billy Turner, Tony Lippett, Jordan Phillips

Hopefully the sports science and analytic specialists Tannenbaum brought in will help to keep these guys healthier. Love that he did that...If that happens we are good to go.

Just my opinion though...

Let it go brother...let it go. I thought I screwed up once but I was mistaken. I can admit that.

What are you going to do when he wins 12 games next year?

Come on gentlemen. All coaches make mistakes and yes, even the great ones make stupid decisions. The proof for Philbin on the time out mistake will be if he ever makes the same call again. Not that he made it once.

You show me a coach in the NFL, any coach, and I'll show you a coach that made a few boneheaded decisions that cost him games.

As far as clown coaches, The only clown coaches we have had were; Wanny and Sparano.

Saban was a good coach that listened to his wife and bailed on the team...thats not being a clown, thats being hen-pecked.

Cameron was a guy that took over a team and a roster that in no way resembled what HE wanted the team to look or play like. And then to top it off, he was not given the time to make the roster over to fit his vision...thats not a clown, thats not being given a chance by management, to do the job you were hired to do. Big difference.
