I agree . Odrick was a waste of a first rounder IMO. Let him go before Starks. A great Defense needs players like him and as weve seen this past Superbowl Great defenses win championships.

The problem, Samsam, is that we have quite a few front-line FAs, and they will want to get paid. True, we have cap space, but if Miami signs all of their FAs, then there will be no money left over.
Got to let some of them walk; sign the guys that would be hard to replace, i.e., Grimes.

My crystal ball tells me that Starks is going to overprice himself, which will mean he walks.

You must have been in the shitter a lot my friend.
Starks 2013 stats: 49 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 FF
Odrick 2013 stats: 43 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 1 FF
Odrick = Starks. We don't need an aging DT who is no better than another guy already on our roster and who wants to GET PAID.
That money is better spent rebuilding the o-line or re-signing Grimes.

With all due respect, LB play was the main reason our run D faltered, not Solia... The LB didn't fill the gaps, get off blocks and attack the ball carry at the line of scrimmage... They weren't in very good position when we got exploited...

At the price of losing grimes and adding other quality FAs. No thanks. Keep grimes and solia and add some ol. Starks and solia both are not critical for the $$

Agreed. No need of letting go of the good players we have and getting someone new.
We need to keep good players and add to that.
If you add a player and let go of a good player you aint doing a thing.

Most important stat:
Odrick is 26
Starks is 30
"down" years are going to be the norm, not the exception, for Starks from here on out.
Over paying for older players is a sure fire recipe for destroying your cap.
Starks made 8.5 mill last year. He wants more than that, long term.
No thanks. I'd rather go with the cheaper option in Odrick who is a very similar player.

Its not that simple Sam.
You have to manage your cap.
Starks wants a raise form his $8.5m last year. He's in a 3 man rotation at DT and isn't even a full time player anymore.
Its absurd to tie that much money up in a guy who plays half the snaps...at most.
You have Wake (7.25), Jones (3.5), Wheeler (6.5) , Ellerbe (7.5), Jordan (4.75), Patterson (5.4) already accounting for 35m in cap space this year.
If you sign back our better FA's on defense at what they want you add:
Grimes (10m), Soliai (6m), Starks (9M), You'd have 70M tied up in 9 defense players.
That leaves you $50 mill for your offense.
Good luck rebuilding that O-line won a shoe string budget.
Or look at it this way...ball park we have around $30m in cap space for next year.
$6M for draft picks
$10m for Grimes
$6M for Soliai
$8m for Starks
There's your $30M.
How are you going to bring in 4 starting Olineman to play with pouncey and keep Tannehill from getting killed with Zero cap space? And please don't tell me you plan would be to draft 6 offense lineman and HOPE 4 of them pan out. Hope is not a strategy.
Who said Soliai wanted only 6 mil? Soliai play was really off last year and he did not do a good job of keeping guards of our lbs. People continue to point out the play of lbs but our DTs did not do a good job of doing this. Soliai had a really bad year.

Nobody. It was an estimate.
That's what he made the last two years. He didn't outplay that contract so its a reasonable jump off point for negotiations/estimates.
If he hits the open market he could get more.
If we wrap him up early we might get him with a home town discount. He took less last time to stay in Miami.
Either way, the point is that you can't put the bulk of the cap space into defenders who aren't elite and get by on a shoe string budget trying to fix the offense.
That means making choices.
Do you want NFL ready OG's? Ok...say goodbye to Starks and his $8+M.
Do you want an elite LT? So long Mr. Grimes.
We can't have it all, unless our current FA's take massive pay cuts from what they made last year. Somehow I doubt that's going to happen.

Guys, with everything that went on with Starks and Dolphin management, you don't think he is going to over value himself just so he can get out of Miami?
Starks knows damn well that Odrick played well and is cheaper than he will be (once the negotiations begin). Think Starks cares?
Right now, Starks just wants the money; he doesn't care what team he ends up with.

stop making sense
though I do disagree with you on not resigning grimes

You are right.
Lets ignore reality and just sign all our guys and all of the best free agents and hope the NFL doesn't notice we are $300m over the salary cap.
That sounds like a good strategy.
Ok Sam.
So you are gm. You just re-signed all out good FA's (Starks, Soliai, Grimes, Clemons, etc) and you now have $6m in cap space left for your draft picks.
Whats your game plan to fix whats broken on offense?
C'mon Truth, not fair! People should have the right to bitch and moan about things without actually have a solid plan to put in its place you big bully!
