Had to go to a dinner starting at 7:30 PST (4:30 EST), when I listened on the radio before entering the event, Heat were down by 10.

Well, they lost game 6 so I hope you are wrong about game 7.

I root for the Thunder, Clippers, Lakers, and Heat and the Heat are my only team left.

I guess if they lose, I'd root for the Pacers because Reggie Miller played there but it wouldn't be any fun.

If you don't believe Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time go back and look at what players were saying after he retired the first time. Watch the 30 for 30 movie about Reggie Miller. It says it all.

Mike maybe the greatest of all time but my number 1 pick in the greatest of all time draft is Magic Johnson.

Having an unlimited amount of money and giving my opponent the first pick (its fantasy after all). I think my fantasy team is usually better than my opponent that picks Jordan.

PG - Magic
SG - Oscar
C - Akeem
PF - Nate Thurmond
SF - Bird

Ok, then. I'll choose:

PG - John Stockton
SG - Michael Jordan
C - Kareem
PF - Tim Duncan
SF - Lebron

I'll gladly put my team up against yours.

Hmm I got you everywhere except Labron/Jordan (started to choose Labron but gotta stay old school w/ Bird) but I got players of the bench. I will let you name your bench first for fairnes. I do not think we will bump heads. Name 5.

Uhh...really? Nate Thurmond over Duncan? Hakeem over Kareem? O...K..

Here's my bench: Jason Kidd, Kobe Bryant, Bill Russell, Kevin Garnett, Julius Erving

I can live with the Akeem over Kareem pick. I think he was a more complete player.

But how do you take either of them over Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain?

I think my 1st team would be Oscar, Jordan, LeBron, Duncan and Russell.

My 2nd team would be Magic, Kobe, Bird, Malone, and Chamberlain.

My 3rd team would be Stockton, Maravich, Dr. J, Charles Barkley and Kareem.

What about Karl Malone? Also, Maravich and Stockton were both PGs, so I don't think this makes much sense.

My bench Len Bias, Isaih Thomas, Connie Hawkins, Sidney Moncrief and Artis Gilmore.

Yep Thurman takes Duncan. He would introduce him to an intensity that would put him into a fetal position and I like Duncan. Guys like Hawkins
and Thurman would not be impressed at all by K Malone, Duncan and even Kobe.

Bias (maybe Hawkins) I believe is the only guy I ever saw that could match up w/ Labron.

Gilmore used to match up nicely against Kareem as did Akeem but Kareem always had better team mates around him.

Other than being 7'2, Kareem was a below average defensive player.

Statistically, they are pretty even. Kareem with a slight lead in ppg, 24 vs 21. Bout the same on the glass. Kareem was a better passer at about 1 asst per game. Olajuwon was the best shot blocker in league history since the started tracking that stat in 1973.

He was better than Russell offensively, but Russell might be the best defender in league history. I'd take Russell over him but I concede that the statistical argument is lopsided, at least offensively, in favor of Kareem.

But Jabarr can't hold a candle to Chamberlain statistically.

ppg: Wilt 30.1, Kareem 24.6
Reb: Wilt 22.9, Kareem 11.2
assts: Wilt 4.4, Kareem 3.6

Malone was on my 2nd team.

Its my understanding that Maravich played both guard spots. But I was a kid when he played so I can't say for sure.

Len Bias? If we were talking about the best college players of all time, maybe...

But he never played a minute in the NBA. How can he even be considered?

I mean there are guys in every city who were legendary high school and playground players but never got a chance at showing they were as good as the best of the best due to drugs, crime, bad luck, or whatever.

If Len Bias, why not James Williams, Earl Manigault, Joe Hammond, Herman Knowings, etc, etc, etc?

Im 30, so I grew up in the Michael Jordan era, and he is my all-time favorite player......

BUT...

I realize this may come off as sports blasphemy, but I think Lebron James is the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. We are watching before our eyes a guy that in 75 years will be the Babe Ruth of his sport.

Now, I realize he doesnt jump as high as Vince Carter did, and he wasnt as clutch as Jordan was, and he doesnt have as pretty a shot as Kobe, I realize at every facet, their may be a better guy individually than him.

But at every "all-around" facet? Lebron James is the best.

But, and I say again, BUT....the area where I think Lebron James is the greatest, and I mean absolutely the greatest, is his basketball I.Q.

I think James is the smartest basketball player to ever play. Ever.

I agree and disagree Aqua.

I think LeBron isn't the best YET, but I believe that he will be when all is said and done.

As for him being the "smartest" player ever, there are a bunch of guys, not blessed with his physical tools, who managed to get into the Hall of Fame because of their basketball IQ.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, just not sure how you prove one great player is a smarter player than another.

Take Larry Bird for example. Not NEARLY the athlete LeBron is but similar in size. He's one of the top 20 players in league history BECAUSE of his court smarts.

If you took away LeBron's speed and athleticism I don't think he comes close to the career Bird had....but who could possibly know for sure?

He needs to try out for a MLB farm club before he can beat out MJ at anything.

I think 'The Greatest' label will always be influenced by our personal bias'. Jordan while not my favorite gets my vote as the greatest. He was every bit the athlete as Labron and just as smart as bird. Until Labron gets those rings on his fingers he still outside of my top 3 as 'The greatest'.

Truth,

Sorry if I wrote as if he is already currently the greatest. He's not. After reading what I wrote it definately looks like I said he already is.

I dont think that is the case. But I do think that he will be the greatest of all time when his career is over.

I suppose if you're going by stats alone...but Wilt played in a slighly earlier era than Kareem, and he towered over everyone. During most of Kareem's career he had to contend with guys comparable to his size. BTW: One stat Wilt can't touch on Kareem is rings.

If you could add one player in his prime to a roster now that wiuldinstantly turn it into a contender i think that mj is that player. He is tge payton manning of bball.

Odenn- I think Lebron has to be in that conversation as well...

Crowder i think you are right. But imo MJ has a much more proven clutch rating so id go with him on that aspect alone. If it came down to one shot to win it all would you give it to LeBron or MJ. So far history says i give it to MJ.

I was just referring to the one player in his prime you could
add to the roster that would instantly make you a contender.
I think Lebron is probably that guy, you could add him to any roster and they probably go to the finals or close to it... The roster he had along side him in 07 when LJ was not in his prime, I dont think MJ could have taken to the finals. So in his prime, I have to give it to LJ, and I am not even sure he is in his prime yet, the guy keeps getting better, developing more and more parts of his game every year...

Some of these posts are longer than necessary because they quote the other guy's post in full. The writer then responds only to a small portion of the prior post.

To make those posts shorter, just "delete" the text of the prior post to which you are quoting but NOT responding.

Anyone not knowing how to "delete" should hold down the "shift" key and then press the "up or down" or the "left or right" arrows to shade the text you want to delete. Then hit the space bar and that text will be deleted. On the last step, you can also use the "edit" button and hit "delete."
