The crop of rookie QBs playing almost every down this season is amazing. We also have a large group of QBs selected from the previous draft that are playing. The "landscape" is changing, so to speak.
In 2011 the following guys were drafted.
Carolina Panthers – Round 1(1) – Cam Newton, Auburn
Tennessee Titans – Round 1(8) – Jake Locker, Washington
Jacksonville Jaguars – Round 1(10) – Blaine Gabbert, Missouri
Minnesota Vikings – Round 1(12) – Christian Ponder, Florida State
Cincinnati Bengals – Round 2(35) – Andy Dalton, TCU
San Francisco 49ers – Round 2(36) – Colin Kaepernick, Nevada
New England Patriots – Round 3(74) – Ryan Mallett, Arkansas
Kansas City Chiefs – Round 5(135) – Ricky Stanzi, Iowa
Houston Texans – Round 5(152) – Taylor Yates, North Carolina
Chicago Bears – Round 5(160) – Nathan Enderle, Idaho
Baltimore Ravens – Round 6(180) – Tyrod Taylor, Virginia Tech
New York Jets – Round 7(208) – Greg McElroy, Alabama
Of these QBs, now in there 2nd year, Andy Dalton and Ponder have the best team records with the exception of Kaepernick who has played 3-4 full games with SF.
For 2012 NFL Draft, we have:
Andrew Luck QB Stanford 1 1(1) Indianapolis
R. Griffin III QB Baylor 1 2(2) Wash
Ryan Tannehill QB Texas A&M 1 8(8) Miami
Brandon Weeden QB Oklahoma State 1 22(22) Cleveland
Brock Osweiler QB Arizona State 2 25(57) Denver
Russell Wilson QB Wisconsin 3 12(75) Seattle
Nick Foles QB Arizona 3 25(88) Phil
Kirk Cousins QB Michigan State 4 7(102) Washington
Ryan Lindley QB San Diego State 6 15(185) Arizona
B.J. Coleman QB Chattanooga 7 36(243) Green Bay
C. Harnish QB N. Illinois 7 46(253) Indianapolis
Luck replaced Manning with the Colts and was expected to start. He was projected to be exceptional. So was RG3. Tannehill was not expected to start and would sit behind a veteran (didn't happen, as we know).
Of these rookie QBs Luck may be seeing the playoffs this year. The "suck for Luck" (tank it for Luck) project apparently worked for the Colts, and miraculously the team went from a crappy 2-14 to playoff team with Luck.
The Colt fans couldn't be happier this year.
The surprise, of course, is not Weeden as some expected, but Wilson. He's making things happen and Seattle may just make the playoffs. Coming off a 58-0 win--things look good for him as their franchise QB.
Of all these QBs, this year's crop and last year's crop, who in you opinion is likely to lead their team for years to come? Any hidden talent waiting in the wings behind an aging veteran? Thoughts?
It sure looks like the top 5-6 in both year groups are likely to be around for a long time (barring injury). What do you think?
