I'll be happy if a new GM includes getting a new Head Coach!

Hard telling how many good people we lost out on because they didn't want to work with or for, Jeff Ireland.

There are the ones we know about....Manning, Fisher, Harbaugh...and then the ones we don't know about.

To me, Philbin's status and how the new staff is structured would depend on whether or not the team is behind Philbin.

There were rumblings that Tannehill and others had lost faith in Sherman and now he is gone. I guess we will see.

There are a LOT of fine internal and external GM candidates for Ross to consider.

I won't pretend to know the merits of the supposed external candidates; I'll wait to see who is actually CONFIRMED as a real candidate, but I can tell you that Dolphins Asst GM Brian Gaine would be someone the Dolphins ought to talk to. He and Director of Pro Personnel Anthony Hunt are the strengths of that department, well respected across the NFL.

Tom Gamble thumbs up

The rest of the scrubs on the current Dolphin GM radar have me worried though, hope we can lure Gamble away.

As I (and others) mentioned in other posts, getting a good GM from outside the organization "ain't gonna happen!"

Philbin and Aponte (supposedly) teaming up against Ireland -- who wants to be a part of that?

If any "name" GMs even go to Miami for an interview, they are going to demand both Aponte and Philbin be "released." No one will want to take the job with those two there.

We can look at the respect factor that you mentioned (above) another way: Ireland lost confidence in Philbin and Aponte; Philbin for not fixing the offense and Aponte for being a backstabber.

No one, including Ross, is innocent, in this mess.

It needs to be cleaned up right now, and if Ross can't stomach that, then sell the team to someone who has the guts to do what's right.

The phins and bucs are the only organizations looking for GMs and the bucs have already given final say to Lovie Smith.

Put you emotions aside for a minute. You're getting carried away with Armando Salguero's opinion pieces. He uses the Miami Herald much like Chyren uses this place to tell everyone that listen that he hates Joe Philbin.

2 openings and the phins is much more attractive. Don't put too much into Armando's "sources" and let the thing play out.

Great advice here. Local media under pressure to produce and outscoop each other, and they can get vindictive when they are locked out. Ross has a well thought out plan here. Keep watching the movie.

I think they'll do things quietly and have a gm and oc in place by Friday.

With the Senior bowl approaching, they need the GM in place soon, OC can wait a little if need be.

Miami Dolphins CEO, Tom Garfinkel, stated that Joe Philbin is the Dolphins head coach. According to the Herald, Garfinkel was asked if the new GM would have power to decide Philbins’ future. Garfinkel responded.

“Steve has a lot of confidence in Joe. Joe’s our head coach — a lot of confidence in Joe Philbin,”

“In my conversations withRoss, we are looking for someone with a proven track record of evaluating talent — a football person,” said Garfinkel, per the Miami Herald. “That’s going to be the first criteria. Someone with a lot of intellect. A collaborative team player. Someone who’s creative and open-minded.”

It was reported yesterday that Tom Cable is the number one choice for Stephen Ross but it’s unknown if Cable would take a non-controlled position unless he had full and absolute control over the roster.

You may be right, jsm, that Sal is just giving his opinion, but I highly doubt it.

We have all heard the saying...where there's smoke, there's fire.

I wouldn't categorize the Phins' opening as being more attractive. In that I would say "To who?"

Philbin is still in place. Why would a GM want to come in with a HC already in place, who also has much power?

Based on what Sal said, there was a power struggle going on in the Dolphins' FO, with Philbin and Aponte on one side and Ireland on the other. A GM would want to step into that?

Boss Ross is also too wishy-washy. With all the problems, the only real solution would have been for Ross to just clean house; that wasn't done.

There is also an OC search going on right now, with (supposedly) the first interview on Friday. The GM is going to step into the position with all the assistants already hired?

Messy, messy, messy.

I'm a Johnson fan, but lets keep in mind that the last "GM" type decision he made was to stick us with Dave Wannstedt.

Ant that was

Exactly....and his idea off offense was JJ Johnson, Craig Erickson, Damon Huard and John Avery. The only offensive person that had any sort of NFL success was Karim Abduul Jabaar....That's not good.

We need to tell this guy....We want you to come in and have ful control over personnel. We want to give Philbin one more year and if it doesn't work, you can hire whoever you want to coach the team.

Tom Gamble

Gamble is the Vice President of Player Personnel for the Eagles. It is a position he'd had for one season. He spent his previous eight seasons with the 49ers in the same role. Gamble began his career as a scout for Bill Polian in Indianapolis. He's helped produce 11 playoff teams (five with the Colts, four with the Eagles and two with the 49ers). - Sun Sentinel

IMO, the concern about hiring a good GM with an HC already in place is way overblown. If I were the owner I would be like Ross: I would want the GM and the HC reporting to me directly (or to someone I trusted implicitly).

Dolphins' Steve Ross: "New GM will have autonomous responsibility for 53-man roster and selecting players during draft. Will report to me."

Stephen Ross will be helped on his GM search by Carl Peterson, he announces.

Ross has now decided to hire a G.M. with basically the same duties and authority that Ireland exercised.

Correct. I like how he is approaching this offseason; first time I can say that his actions give me confidence.

I agree. Ross get's lots of flack (even by me today). Lots of speculation and doom and gloom but he has basically kept the same structure. He just got rid of Sherman and Ireland and rightly so.

I still think Philbin is a respected HC and won't be a huge issue for incoming, first time GM's.

We still have a good shot to land a credible and respected football guy.

Still hoping for a Tom Gamble type resume....or Tom Gamble.

It wasn't the structure that was the problem for Miami last year. It was Ireland's failure to execute the draft, fill out the offensive line and replace LB'ers.

The biggest problem, yes. Philbin isn't clean here by any means. But these are the growing pains you get from a rookie HC hire. I expect he'll be better next year IF he makes a solid OC hire!
