I bet the next move is to overpay a 2d round pick for a mediocre receiver. Shades of when we traded wally ogunlaya for marty booker and a 3d, then traded the 3d for the immortal Lamar Gordon because we were thin at RB
And boy! I hope that 2d we get from the colts joins the pantheon of great 2d round picks around here---pat white, merling, koa misi, etc etc

well, now I have no reason to learn to spell it

PS trading this 2d round pick for James Jones is NOT a good move, if that is the plan. Way overpaying for GBs 3d receiver who never had more than 700 yards receiving. I could live with a 3d, but even that is a lot

I actually think Philbin had something to do with this... I bet he was not pleased at all with Vontae's conditioning and work ethic and told the GM that we didn't need him..
GB built their defense from the draft.. That's what Philbin probably wants to do... We're in this for the long haul. Have to stay positive and Coach do his thing. Its going to be a hard-knocks season.
for the record, I wish we would've kept him though.
The fact is, Vonte has been the best DB on this team since he was drafted.
Somehow people are saying Sean Smith is good, and I've got to ask, "can I have a puff". Has anyone ever looked at how these players play in an actual game?
No to wallace. I would prefer to look at some more modest players for lower picks. Lets keep our bounty of 1st, 2nd, and 3rds. Sadly, there are WRs to be had for 4th and 5th round picks that will upgrade our WR corps. I said it before, James Jones probably wouldn't cost much and he will be familiar with the offense. Packers have a bunch of young WR from their PS last year that they are trying to fit on their 53. I'd do it for a 4th.

The difference between us and him is that we waited until we had a reason. I've never seen any Dolphin fan so happy to be right about losing.
Douchebag
An individual who has an over-inflated sense of self worth, compounded by a low level of intellegence, behaving ridiculously in front of colleagues with no sense of how moronic he appears.

This is just simply not true. They were both drafted in the same year and Smith started from day one.
It's about getting better. Coaches say Smith has done that. Smith is all over the place making plays. What has Davis done other than holding penalties and personal foul penalties?
Smith has taken the next step. VD hasn't. He also showed up out of shape this year. He couldn't even beat out Richard Marshall. Formerly a backup player.
If you think Davis is better than Smith then you have already had too many "puffs".
Philbin is sending a clear message. We don't want people we have to babysit and we don't want divas. We want hard working leaders.
It's about time someone stood up and refused to deal with these morons. Marshall, CJ, Davis...see a pattern here?
If we could pick up Jones at a reasoable cost then yes we should do it.
What about Tory Gurley, Jericho Cotchery (as a one year option), Dane Sanzenbacher, Deion Branch????, Mike Thomas, Louis Murphy, Mike Williams, Deion Butler, Ben Obomanu...this upcoming cuts will be interesting.
Once again the majority of this board over-reacts, I applaud them for getting something in return for Vonte. Todays financial situation is way different then 3 or 4 years ago when Vontae, S Smith and Jake Long were drafted high and paid a kings ransom, re-signing all 3 of them in todays market was gonna be nearly impossible, if cutting bait (and getting something of value) with the least productive of the 3 keeps Jake and Sean around, then hats off Jeff Ireland.
All of you guys that were taking the owners side in the lockout......this is what you were wanting, now deal with it
This is a head coach establishing that guys will fall in line, or they will be gone. Philbin clearly wants players to fit his vision, both on the field and in terms of character. He is not going to give guys leeway because of their talent level. And that's a good thing. And it gets his message across.
There is also a reality here. They gave Richard Marshall a significant contract. Smith will hit free agency at the end of the year, and Davis will at the end of 2013. Long term, all 3 guys are not in the plan.
Let's see if Ireland can use draft picks to swing a trade for a WR to help our rookie QB.
As I said about a week back, you don’t win (consistently) with assholes like Davis and CJ and to a lesser degree, Dansby. I applaud getting rid of Davis and cutting our losses while getting a decent draft pick and a bonus in R6. Sure it sets us back a bit in the short term but this team is REBUILDING anyway. Bottom line, do you really think Davis would make a significant difference in this team’s win/loss tally this year?
Right now we have #1 next draft, 2R2 and 2R3 and 2R6. Philbin has this year to develop some core players and then add to that next year. That puts Thill under center with a years experience and then (definitely WITH some positive developments from the young players this year + a very productive draft) we’ll have a fairly competitive product in 2013 with a legit chance at some action in 2014.
I know we’d ALL like to believe this is going to turn around sooner, but like I also said a week or so – the best we can legit hope for right now is:
Thill is the answer @QB and that nightmare is solved.
Philbin & Co. is the answer and…
Ireland grows into a very solid young GM.
If we win 5 or 6 games great. But we’re NOT winning anymore than that. And the first half of the season could be pretty ugly. Not easy fixes. No magic potions. No miracles in a bottle.
Like it or not, its going to take some time for the new regime to get their program implemented and we have a ton of questions to resolve. We can only hope for the best. Either that or just stop following the team. But incessant negativity right now isn’t going make anything better in any way.
