I am seeing reports that it is a sprained mcl for Jake Long

Why does it seem we're always juggling the O-Line!!!??? Geez. It seems we've had injury prone O-Linemen ever since Parcells got here. Not just Long. Remember Jake Grove and Justin Smiley?
Despite the reservations of some who questioned it in the article, Philbin is making the right move by shifting Martin, until Long returns, to the left tackle.
It gives him a crucial opportunity to compare Martin's performances at both positions and determine whether his relatively poor performances were due to either
a) coming to the Pros from college or
b) shifting from left tackle to right tackle.
People on this board have argued with me that the problem is only a) and that all rookies have an initial problem doing b that fades away.
Well, if he goes by to STANFORD ALL CONFERENCE FORM in this next pre season game, then it will show that it probably was more b than a.
I believe Martin is more "athletic" than Long and probably a better LT than RT. And Long's "game" has always been more suited to the traditional RT position - tho he's too broken down at this point and probably can't jack the juice the way he used to.

I think if you go back and look at the combine results, you will find that Long is much more athletic than Martin. That, of course, is if Long's injuries haven't diminished his athleticism.

if long is only going to be out 1 week, then it is the wrong move to flip him. Martin needs all the reps he can get at RT. We already know he cam play LT, he did it for 3 years in college. Now if Long is going to be out for a long period of time, the move Martin to LT since he is likely to be better there now, given his experience. Bottom line is as long as Long can play, he is the LT on this team so we better get Martin ready to play RT, which means giving him reps

BERK, the problem with your position is that it is premised on the argument that ONLY ONE WEEK IN A PRESEASON GAME AT LEFT TACKLE will IRREPARABLY injure Jonathan Martin's progression in the pros in learning right tackle.

Agreed. If Long is only out one week, then one week of reps for Martin at LT won't hurt him. If Long is out longer than one week, then we need Martin at LT during that time. Switching him is the right move unless the coaches are 100% sure that Long will be ready for week 1 and I don't think that is the case.
