Over the last few years, all I have heard is jerry Rice is the greatest WR EVER! I will admit he is a great WR, but greatest ever?
I guess if one goes by stats, yeah, he is the greatest of all time.
It is the same old argument as the greatest QB ever. It is different eras and different rules. How can anyone be judged best ever?
I love Danny Boy, but is he the greatest ever? I don't put any QB in that class, but there sure are a lot of them that are in the conversation, including Dan.
Now, concerning Jerry. As I said, he is a great WR, but there is another name I would put up against him, and if he was in a different era, or had Dan throwing him the ball, HE would probably be considered the greatest WR EVER. That name? Paul Warfield.
The folks on this board who have been around awhile know who I am speaking of, and I am sure there are a lot of young Finfans and Browns fans who know the name.
The guy could catch anything thrown his way and was smooth doing it. Regrettably, he was on two Browns teams that had QBs that were mediocre and on a Fins team that had Griese, who, if lucky, threw 12 passes a game.
I give Rice all the respect but if I am picking between the two I'm not even flipping the coin I am taking Warfield. You can gladly have Rice. Put Warfield in that 49'rs O that Rice played in ........
What separates Rice from other great WRs is his competitive fire. The guy never stopped working. He played hard. He practiced hard. He worked hard EVERY off-season to improve. It's the guys that are already great but aren't satisfied and keep trying to improve that raise them to the level of best ever. Michael Jordan is another example. Rice was the Michael Jordan of WRs.
Rice could take an 8 yard slant 70 yards for a TD better than any WR in history. His route running is widely recognized and impeccable and the best ever.
I had many great days watching dan play....even close to heart attacks watching him play..
I went to a game where he threw an int against the colts in the regular season with like 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter...The colts went up by 4 i believe...
Then he comes back with a winning drive on the last drive of the game...

I, personally, think that Steve Young was overrated. I think the offensive talent and system made Young what he was. He was terrible in Tampa Bay. Meanwhile, Montana was somewhat successful when he went to KC. Montana also won a Superbowl without Rice (and with far less talent around him).
So, I feel that Rice had a lot to do with Young's success...not the other way around.

I consider rice one of the best wrs of alltime.
Just not the best wr of alltime.
I sometimes wonder if rice would had been as successfull as he was back then, today. With todays athletes...JMO.

It would be much more regarded as an apology if you didn't follow up your "apology" with multiple ADDITIONAL posts that say the same political/racial stuff CRAP all over again.
I deleted your posts that did not address the topic at hand and strayed into politics/racial territory. I THINK I got them all, there were lots.
This was a great thread about a legitimate football discussion. Please don't ruin it (again).
Everyone has their opinion, but I hope you guys noticed that I didn't annoint Warfield "greatest ever." I won't do that with any position.
I don't know how you guys can do that. Like I said in my post, different era, different rules, etc. Think about it; Rice had free-run of the field, whereas Warfield had a DB's hands all over him all the way down the field, and they still couldn't stop him. Could Rice put up the big numbers if he played back then? Probably. What kind of numbers could Warfield have put up in Rice's time?
But, as I said, I can't see how anyone can be said to be "the best ever."
