Could be either or but who is to say that about any position in the draft....its all a crapshoot....
They said the same garbage about Marino as they did about Mallett....thank goodness Shula had the guts to pick Marino.....Pittsburg passed on Marino and chose a lineman....thats why we have been terrible for many years.
Pat Kirwan said that he thinks this was the most overrated QB class he could remember. Phil Simms said he was puzzled why so many of these QBs would go so high.
Newton- he made 300 throws at the D1 level. Of those, Rich Gannon said that only about 20 were on NFL routes, and some of those were bubble screens. He said there is no body of work to judge him on. Wasn't asked to read defenses. And history is filled with athletic QBs who like to run that didn't work out in the NFL.
Gabbert- another guy who has no experience in an NFL style offense, and little experience being under center. Tends to drop his arm slot, so may need his mechanics overhauled. Offense called for him to make 1 read and then take off running.
Locker- not an accurate passer from the pocket.
Ponder, Dalton- neither has the arm to make all the NFL throws.
Kaepernick- similar to Newton and Gabbert in that he played in a spread offense, and has a run first mentality. Will need his mechanics completely overhauled. Pat Kirwan said he spoke to a Nevada receiver, and the receiver said that Kaepernick has a strong arm, but that he is not accurate.
Mallett- Gil Brandt, who has been evaluating players since 1960, said he wouldn't draft him, period. He said that in 50 years, he cannot remember a less mobile and less athletic guy who ever had any success at the position in the NFL.
IT could be the 2007 draft class for all we know.
Such names as Jamarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Kevin Kolb, John Beck, Drew Stanton, Trent Edwards, Isaah STanBack, Jeff Rowe, Troy Smith, Jordan Palmer, Tyler THigpen.....
9 Qb's taken in the first 5 rds of that draft..... Last time I checked I do not think one of them has come close to proving himself in the NFL... Yes, not one guy.
So Just because we didnt take a QB, doesnt mean the GM, sucks, Lets see what happens..
As mentioned above, is it 1983, I doubt it, is it 1999 or 2007...
I watched Christian Ponder a shit ton in college. If he was the 12th overall, this was a piss poor QB draft. I shot beer out of my nose when he went in the first
Looked like a lot of desperate teams over drafting qbs based on need and desperation....they got too enamored with recent qb success....bradford, flacco, ryan etc.
