Quite frankly, I wasn't sold on Harbaugh anyway. He's a college coach whose had less success at this level than such epic NFL failures as Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban. Maybe he'll be a great NFL coach but its hard to gauge that based on essentially one season. Harbaugh was at best a crap shoot. Cowher was the safer and better choice. Ross should have done whatever was necessary to bring Cowher in. At worst, he brings instant credibility and respect to the franchise. Players love him and free agents would have flocked to play for him. I'm guessing that our divisional rivals were much more nervous about Cowher potentially coming here than an untested and inexperienced Harbaugh taking over the reins. If the only reason this didn't happen was the desire to keep Ireland as GM, then it makes it an even greater boneheaded move. Ireland has been adequate at best. He is eminently replaceable and losing out on Cowher because of him is the real reason that fans should be pissed right now-- not because of not getting Harbaugh.
I guess the question is whether you'd rather have Cowher making the decisions, or Ireland, Sparano, with a dash of Carl Peterson thrown in. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Sparano... but if you're asking me whether I think we'd be better off with Bill Cowher, I think its a no brainer.

Whether it was his own GM or not, he very likely wanted to be the final decision maker, like Wanny was over Spielman for his first few years.
If he wanted complete control, he wouldn't even bother selecting a GM at all. He would simply retain that role himself.
He either does not like Ireland's body of work, or he wants his new boss to be somebody he knows and trusts. This is quite common during any transfer of authority.

He's not stupid. He knows doing 2 jobs isn't practical. Most coaches that have tried have failed.

Where do you get the impression he'd be picking his boss??!! Dude! That makes NO sense.
You're missing the point completely. Complete Control doesn't mean you do all the work. It just means you make the final decision and/or you can overrule any decision.
You two are simply naive about the business nature of the sport, and consider this relatively common corporate transition model to be something entirely foreign because it involves your football team.
The simple fact of the matter is that Cowher never made it clear that he wants complete control. You are merely assuming that to be the case, which is foolish. There is a high probability that he simply wants to surround himself with "his people", which is very common in business AND in football...or he simply does not want to work with Ireland.

Haha, I like how you feel the need to manipulate my sentences in an attempt to find a contradiction. There is a significant difference between these two statements:
"He simply wants to surround himself with "his people".
"There is a high probability that he simply wants to surround himself with "his people".

If you're not going to admit that "High Probability" means Very Likely, then what's the point of your argument?
So what all of you are saying is that it is not at all possible that Cowher simply did not want to work for Ireland, and wanted to approve the next GM that would be hired?
