You sure it was Earl Thomas? He started 26 games in two years and only played two years.
What would be the best draft scenario for the Dolphins this year? What would you prefer we do and what direction would you like to see us go in regards to the first 3 rounds?
I think the 3 positions that we should address (that we NEED to address) with the first 3 picks, in no particular order are:
WR, NT, and LB (OLB and/or IL
In some rounds, I've included two players seperated by a / to indicate either one being taken at that spot, but more specifically, to emphasize the idea of going after the BPA at that particular position at that spot
Scenario 2
1. Jason Pierre Paul
2. Demaryius Thomas/Golden Tate
3. Cam Thomas
Scenario 3
1. Rolando McClain
2. Terrence Cody
3. Chad Jones
Scenario 4
1. Dan Williams
2. Best LB available
3. Mardy Gilyard
We'll obviously know a lot more after the combine, but I think this draft is incredibly deep at LB. A lot of intriguing prospects at OLB and a fair number of options at ILB too. I think we need help at LB more than anyone is giving attention to. We have maybe one of the worst LB situations in the league. With Porter gone and JT coming off surgery and maybe not even staying with us, OLB is a giant question mark. That being said, I hope that question mark means Wake will graduate to full time starter on the outside. If so, I think that position will be set. We have questions on the other outside LB spot. We should probably address that in the draft. Jason Pierre Paul is built like a JT clone at 6'6 but a little heavier. He may be a real disruptive guy on the outside. Guys like Sergio Kindle, Sean Witherspoon, Brandon Graham, etc. are all options, #12 overall may be too early for some of them however, and trading down a few spots might be the answer. That probably won't happen though.
Inside is miserable with Crowder and Adele. I think if we could pull off the signing of Karlos Dansby we would have some huge breathing room in terms of options in the draft. We wouldn't be forced to spend a pick on ILB, yet if we still decided to after singing Dansby, we could have an amazing interior LB core say if we land McClain or Spikes, or even one of the other intriguing inside LB prospects.
I love Dan Williams and we need a NT, so I wouldn't be upset if we went there at 12, but we would have to find a solid LB in the 2nd for that to round out nicely. I think we are desperate for a true #1 WR, but unless Dez Bryant is there at 12, I don't want to waste more late round draft picks on #2 type WR's. Maybe if a guy like D. Thomas or Tate or Benn is there in the 2nd, but for me it's either Bryant in the 1st or focus on defense in the 1st three rounds if he's not there. I don't think he'll be there, but if Jhavid Best was still on the board at 43 I would pull the trigger so fast. I think he's going to be a lights out player.
And finally, I would actually like to trade up into the late 1st or early 2nd to grab the beast linebacker we can find if we don't go McClai/JPP/ or the like with #12 overall instead opting for Braynt or Williams. I would be ok with trading some late round picks to ensure we land the right guy if we had to move up a few spaces to get him. We saw what happened last year, Ireland hinted at missing on players (they weren't there) we weren't aggressive enough to go and get them. I don't want that to happen again. So which scenario do you guys like, or something different?
I hope we stay away from Paul-Pierre. He was a one year player. Kind of sounds "developmental" to me, and we dont need a "developmental" player. We need a stud.
kiper has injury concerns about thomas due to his size. he has not been injured in the past. parcells will not draft bryant in the first, if any team wants a wide receiver in the first round then why not just trade the pick to denver for marshall. who is a top three receiver in the league and is a young and proven playmaker. i would way rather have marshall than bryant.
my scenario for miami
1st round- berry if he falls to 12 otherwise earl thomas
2nd round- NT either Cam Thomas or Cody
3rd round- Thomas WR from GT - he has as much potential as any wr in the draft but will fall because of foot injury
4th round- best OLB available
i could see an OLB in any of these rounds. it depends on what other moves in free agency are made. NT, WR, OLB, and S have to be addressed.
Pat Kirwan, who worked for Parcells in NY, has us taking Penn State DT Jared Odrick in round 1. He says he can play anywhere up front and has the motor that Parcells loves. He also says he could play DE, with someone (presumably Starks) sliding to NT.
Could Odrick handle NT? I know the quick answer from people will be no, and they'll say it's because he only weighs 304. Well, Ferguson only weighs 312. I remember at the Senior Bowl, they asked Odrick about playing nose, and he said he could definitely do it (what else would he say?). Personally, I hate the idea of moving Starks inside, considering how well he played at DE.
i agree i dont like that idea either. i wonder if odrick could fall to miami in the second though. that might be worth it if odrick could play NT. it would give the defense some versatility too.
Starks at NT is a waste. He offers too much pass rush ability. When a guy finally lives up to expectations...why switch his positions? He would have made the Pro Bowl if they voted separately for 3-4 and 4-3 DE's.
No way D. Thomas slides to the 3rd. He will work out about a week before the draft and probably run a 4.48. High second round pick IMO.
I say stick with an all Georgia Tech 1st day. Derrick Morgan at 12 and Demaryius Thomas at 43.
im not sure morgan is best suited to a 3-4 and thomas wont go early second. he might work his way back into the middle to late second round and thats at best. other questions besides the foot exist. id rather see a safety in the first and lb, nt, or wr in the second. that said i really like thomas and would really like him on the roster next year

In Kirwan's latest mock, he has Demaryius Thomas going at #21, ahead of Dez Bryant. He says that many people around the league have been telling him that Thomas is in the same class as Calvin Johnson, and he's rising up draft boards.
As a former NFL front office guy, Kirwan's a pretty good insider. He's usually got a pretty good pulse as to what's going on with the draft. He's got Bryant falling to #27 because of the baggage he brings.
1- FS Earl Thomas, much needed cover skills at the position
2- LB Jerry Hughes, tough pass rusher
3- WR Carlton Mitchell or WR Andre Roberts, depends if we want Mitchell's potential or Roberts' polish
4- NT Torrell Troup, 2-down run stuffer
6- WR Blair White, good hands and routes, maybe worth a flyer
6- LB Keaton Kristick, has met with the Fins twice, PFW says he "plays like his hair is on fire"
6- LB Micah Johnson, thumper
7- NT Corey Peters, developmental project

Nice picks, but can we really afford to wait until the 4th round for a NT? I think we need to look for a 4-down guy in the 2nd round.

How many NT in the league play 3 downs? Almost all of them are run stuffers who come off the field in passing situations, just like Jason Ferguson does. Only the elite can rush the passer, too. And if there is a 3-down NT in this draft, he's not lasting until the 2nd round.

I thought our issue with Soliai was that he's only a 2 down NT. If that's what we need, then we already have one.
i like those picks a lot. thomas and hughes in the first two rounds would be great. at nt we just need depth at this point cuz jf will be back at week 9 so if we take someone in the 4th and it doesnt work out then we will be ok down the stretch and can fix it next offseason. im not sure if cam thomas or cody will be much better than anyone in the 4th but they probably do have a higher ceiling. just hope that one of those wr hits it big. should draft big athletic wr so henne has some big targets to go along with bess, ginn, and hartline who are all smaller targets
