I like it that you have us taking a FS in the 2nd. Lets not forget that the reason we lost so many games this year wasn't b/c of our LB situation, it was b/c of our horrid 2ndary. Our 2ndary is the worst I've ever seen... Well, Maybe last year's squad was worse..
Good thing is that we have some young guys at Corner that should be really good this year, but we have lots of ground to cover. To me, that is our most needed area. Not LB.
If the PHINS wait until the 3rd the FS options will be thin. But if you make this selection early you can have your choice, anyone but Earl Thomas. The DEFENSE is a few key pieces away from being stellar. Nolan is one piece. And those young CBs is another.
Linebacker- both a run-stopping ILB and a speedy ILB to cover tight ends and backs, and another pass-rushing OLB. We've got some talent in the secondary-both corners and both safety positions. We need talent in too many other positions to take a FS early.
If we drafted McClain in the 1st and then landed Spikes in the 2nd?
I would get up off of my couch, go to the liquor store and buy a $100 bottle of scotch, pour one for me and my under-age son and celebrate!
That would be freaking amazing!!!
Weak LB's put pressure on Safeties.
Strong LB's allow safeties to be impact players.
in boxing it is the Jab that sets up the knock-out punch. No jab? your screwed...no matter how strong of a right you have...it never gets unleashed.
In Football, a strong LB makes your SS a knock-out punch...breaking up passes, stripping the ball, sending players to sidelines 'needing a minute'. An effective ILB allows the FS to ball hawk more.
Yeah, but how rusty is he going to be? He hasnt played ball in over a year. Thats a lot of time to be away from the game for a guy who has never been in the league to begin with. Im cool with him being able to learn the entire playbook in a day, but can he actually perform?

Cameron Wake sat out a year before trying out in the CFL.
Ricky Williams sat out a year as well.
Both those guys were pretty good when they came back.

He sat out a year before the CFL, then proceeded to win Rookie of the Year AND Defensive Player of the Year that first year in the CFL.
I realize the "LEAGUE" you're refering to is the NFL, but Wakes accomplishments in the CFL were significant.

I considered FS MYRON ROLLE a 1st rounder last year when he decided to go study, Neurology. He's 6'1 220 4.5. There are some very talented safeties and this guy could be there in the 4th.
Vic, my point is, Wake atleast played ball before coming into the NFL. Thats all Im saying. I never bashed Rolle, Wake or Williams. I just said I hope Rolle isnt real rusty seeing as guys like Mike Williams and Maurice Clarett took a year off before coming staight to the NFL and failed.

I get that, but if Wake can go from a year off of football to rookie of the year in the CFL, it's not impossible that Rolle could still play at a high level even after a year off. The kid is super-smart. He just needs to get in shape.
I agree, and Im not saying he cant. I was just throwing out the observation that a year away from football could prove him rusty. Thats all I was saying.
