I have no doubt that he will choose some good players. However, he is getting schooled in the game of drafting. He trades down when he shouldn't ...and stays put when he should've traded down.
Note 1:
In round 1 he chooses James when he had at least 2 opportunities to trade down and get a second 3rd rounder from Cleveland or new Orleans. I assure you that Cleveland would of agreed to trade. And...if we dropped to number 26,,,,James would've been there.
Note #2:
In round 2...
They got less value for their trade backs than any other team in Round 2. Miami got a 4th to move back once to 57 and a 5th to move back again to 63(instead of 61). Meanwhile, 49ers got a 5th this year AND a 4th NEXT year to move back from 56 and only gave up a 5th to get back up to 57.
Why would they not get San Fran's #61 and instead agreed to get their #63. Makes no sense.
THEN to move up into the beginning of Round 3, they give up their first of their 4th round picks. They gave up a 4th rounder to move up in the 3rd round..but get a fifth to move down in the second....
He probably is a good talent evaluator...but has no idea how to play the game of "draft"

Hickey did a great job on Friday.
He traded down in round two twice and ended up with the player he probably was going to take at #50 AND the ammunition he needed to move up in the 3rd round to get a player he coveted. That's how you work the draft. I just wish he'd been this aggressive on day one. We'd have had at least one extra pick last night if he had.
We'll see how good of an evaluator he is, but I have no issues with any of the trades he made.
I like the Landry pick. I never looked at any of his film or highlights because he ran 4.77 at the combine and I didn't have the time this year to look at everyone. He's no burner but he's really really good. Reminds me of Hines Ward. Not super big, not super fast, but fast enough, very smart, and he plays with an edge.
I love the Billy Turner pick. I'd have preferred Marcus Martin at C, but Turner is a guy I really wanted in this draft. I get why they took him over Martin. He's more versatile, and with a few years of NFL coaching and weight training he has a better than average chance of ending up at LT.
I was thinking the same as Steviec13, we didn't seem to get the value others got. need to get some niner picks if their is some talent available they can't sign them all. Scary though taking another Oline project in the third
I can't say I disagree with the assessment so far. I may be proven wrong but no way in hell is he practicing what he has been preaching. Best player available? Character...Not even close.
You pass on Darqueze Dennard, Brandon Cooks, Marquise Lee, HaHa Dix, Kelvin Benjamin, Bradley Roby to reach for a tackle?
That is not drafting BPA.
Why no trade down?
Ja'Waun James
Jarvis Landry
Billy Turner
Walt Aikens
James and Turner had better be our starting RG & RT for the next 4 years and play at a very high level.
A 2nd round receiver had better be a starter. Can Landry even beat out our 3rd WR in Brandon Gibson? He is probably our 4th receiver right now assuming he beats out Armon Binns and Rashard Mathews.
We already have a 2nd and two-3rd round picks sitting on the roster in Taylor & Davis and Thomas.
Can Aiken even beat out Taylor and Davis?
scratching my head....and hoping I am wrong.
If you know that you will have a tough time landing a top RT in the first round then why put yourself in that position? Should have signed a FA starting right tackle so we could have taken advantage of the talent in the draft and REALLY take BPA.
Bad moves so far.....
Spending money on injury prone, declining players like Finnegan and Delmas when we could have signed a RT and then actually drafted BPA to give this team some play makers.
I admit he should have moved down in the first round as soon as Z. Martin went to the Cowboys.
But I disagree on day 2. He did a good job and picked up some talent and we have an extra pick in R5. We got Zack Thomas in R 5 once. He picked up a cornerback today, I like going defense but I want him to pick up a Middle Linebacker with one of the 5th rounder's.

I agree and disagree.
I think Hickey blew it by not trading down in the first at LEAST once. He probably should have done it twice and added a pair of 3rds and then taken the best OT on his board at the top of round 2. It probably would have been James. Worst case its Bitonio or Moses.
Landry can play. We were going to take a wr early, and I'd have preferred matthews or robinson, but the trade downs made sense. Extra picks in this draft was a must.
Turner was a terrific pick. If we hadn't traded down in the 2nd, we don't get him. At worst he's a very mobile/nasty LG or RT. If he gets a little stronger in his base he's a LT in this league.
As for Aiken, I like him. at this point in the draft I'm looking for good football players. He fits that bill. I couldn't care less where they are ranked. If you have a bunch of guys you like, trade down. If one stands out when you are up, take him.
As for our free agent signings...Delmas is a great signing. He's a top shelf safety when he's healthy. He's making peanuts on a 1 year deal. Little risk, potential for high reward.
Finnegan was terrific before he got injured. He's a little overpaid, but its a short term deal and we had the cap space to waste this year.
As for a free agent RT...we can still sign one. Cheap.

After spending a #1 on a RT, We had better not have a need to sign one in FA.
Delmas falls into Irelands old FA profile of signing injury prone players. He averaged 13 starts over 5 years. Missed 8 games and 5 games in 2012 and 2011. Played 16 games last year but Detroit still had no interest.
Finnegan has not been terrific for years....2011...and he had ONE int. Average 2.25 int's over his career. When do players get better at age 30?
Landry may be able to play but where does he fit this year? Same question for Aikens?
Arthur Lynch, TE....????? Just keeps getting better. First we get rid of blocking TE's and now we are drafting them in the span of a year.
I think we did great today. I'm not sold on the CB Aiken , but I love Arthur Lynch the TE. Pass blocking blue collar TE is just what the DR Ordered. I see a Linebacker was just taken. Another need. Hopefully they all pan out.
Guy stepped up to the plate and took some swings. RESPECT.
I will give him to next season before I shit on him.
I do really think it is cool that we drafted a guy we could have picked up after draft. Congrats to him for being the first drafted out of his college! Go hickey your my hero!! Too bad we don't need a DE though... Oh well
It is hard to judge a draft just hours after it ends... Lets see what happens... I can't tell you how many drafts in the last few years, people around here were super excited about guys that amounted to nothing.... including myself at times...

I don't really know the players or what they'll amount to, but I like the fact that Hickey addressed some areas of need, only time will tell
Fact is, no matter how highly they were touted, drafted, evaluated, tested, what school they played for, what confrence that school was in, or what thier college production was...no one knows how good, or bad a player they'll be until they actually do it on the field.

Check out his tape.
The kid is a beast. He's got the physical size and speed to be a player in this league. Anyone you take in the 7th is going to be a project cap. Might as well roll the dice on a guy with skills attributes you can't teach.
I think he's ticketed for the practice squad, but in a year or two you might have another Derrick Shelby on your hands.
The two guys I'm really happy we signed as UFA's are DT Anthony Johnson and RB Damien Williams. Both were projected in the 3rd-4th round but went undrafted due to positive drug tests.
