I don't see it as an oops; I see it as a smart move.
Albert was nothing special, plus financially, it would have been too expensive. Miami would have had to give up a second round pick, plus Albert's camp was looking for around a $9M per year contract.
It's an "oops" because he put too much stock in Martin against the coaches wishes NOT because he didn't trade for Albert. I wasn't advocating that and I don't know that Philbin was either.
It didn't have to be Albert. There were TONS of quality o-linemen in FA last year.
Side note: I would hate to lose out on 2nd round pick Jamar Taylor over Branden Albert. Obviously Jamar Taylor would have been way more instrumental to success than a quality LT.
Non-sarcastic side note: 61 million for two dud LB'ers or 45 mil for a proven LT?
Sacks allowed...
Albert: 4
Jon Martin & Bryant McKinnie 14 (7 each) That's about 1 per game!
Disagree...Thomas is legit too. He, just like Miller needs to have an effective line blocking for him. No blocking means no backs look good and avergae 2 YPC.
Thomas' 100+ yard game this season showed that he can run hard and effectively...given blocking and a hole to run through.
Sometimes I think many posters get stuck on the concept of "scheme". The "scheme" is all well and good, can a guy pull, get to the second level, etc... BUT - The primary function of an o-lineman is to BLOCK. Regardless of the "scheme", if a guy can BLOCK a way can be found to use him. A "scheme" isn't going to teach him to BLOCK.
this is why PFF is pretty useless.
any metric that concludes that the phins OL was anything less than a historical abortion is garbage.
who are you going to trust, PFF or your lying eyes?

Yeah. I'm sure you have painstakingly watched every single snap of COACHES TAPE and analyzed every single player. You know...the same film that coaches use to evaluate their players.
Any fan that thinks he can analyze a player by watching the CBS or FOX GAME tape from their lazy-boy is a bit naive....or they have not watched the Jacksonville Jaguars for comparison.
They may not be 100% accurate but the word "useless" closer resembles the arm chair QB.

Are you kidding me? Did you not see this OL PLAY? Did you see how many sacks it gave up and how horrible our running game was? How many times 2 DL were in on RT within 2 seconds?
Sorry Eetsi I don't need to break down coaches game film to know that our OL was the worst in the league and any metric that puts it much higher than that is garbage. I don't profess to be able to tell you how many times JOhn Jerry won the 1 on 1 battle with the DL but don't need to know that to know our OL was one of the worst in history last season

yes I suppose no one can have any view on whether a player or team is great or horrible until they have seen all 16 games the other 31 teams have played. sounds like that would make for a fun chatboard.
anyway I don't need to see every other team's OL to make a judgment. The phins gave up the most sacks in the league and it wasn't even close--- 8 more than Jax. Also they were the 26th worst team in rushing. But I guess PFF's silly stats outweigh those numbers, since sacks allowed and yds rushing aren't really all that important to what an OL does anyway.

sure there's more to it that blaming the oline for a sack, or for not opening a hole just like there's more to calling an int a shitty pass. a lot goes into every play.
but our line didn't play well and no matter how many obscure stats and/or grading systems are thrown out there my eyes did not deceive me.
Yes it sucked. No doubt about it. No one is denying that...BUT when you look at it objectively and understand that there were other teams that rushed for fewer yards and 14 other teams that had a worse yards-per-carry average AND STILL gave up lots of sacks....It would be impossible to definitively say Miami was the worst line in football.
Some of the sacks get blamed on Tannehill. Many were the fault of our running backs. Some were TE's. Some were just bad play calls against a particular coverage, sometimes the WR's just didn't get open.
Many, many different things to evaluate.
Berk is making a (emotional) definitive statement without considering all the variables.

To me "USELESS" describes you as a stat geek more than a fan watching the game. Stats sometimes tell a story but stats most of the time mean nothing.

I don't think stats are totally useless, but in this case all you had to do was watch the games to see that the o-line was very bad this year in all its incarnations.

LOL. And just as often stats are only useful for people who can't understand a thing they are watching and are only able to talk through numbers which as I told Rick OFTEN tell us something BUT NOT ALWAYS.
But some people can only look at stats. One stat was that Dan Marino never won a SuperBowl. Guess that means he was a bad quarterback.
Griese won two. Guess that means Griese was a better quarterback than Marino. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
