I believe there are only two possibilities:
(1) Philbin hires from within, or...
(2) A "name" comes in figuring if Philbin gets canned at the end of next season that he will be in line for the HC job.
if philbin promotes from within (a fairly likely possiblity) it will be a finger in the eye to ross and the entire fan base
I really lack confidence that the people running this show have the best intetests of the franchise at heart.
philbin pointing finger at ireland
ireland pointing finger at philbin
ross forcing philbin to dump his bff sherman and now phiblin is pissed
no one on same page putting needs of team first
i blame ross for this dysfunction---which all started when he did not flush ireland along with sporano
now we have a gm on the way out hopefully, with a successor potentially forced to accept a coach not "his" guy
rinse and repeat

I am pretty sure it has been reported that Philbins contract gives him ultimate say over his staff... Not the GM or owner... Which is why it was said Philbin could have refused to fire Sherman...If we were going to fire him or let the new GM choose his own coach, seems like that Philbins final say over his staff and now seeking to hire, creates a bit of a conundrum in to who is exactly going to be in charge of what..

I read this morning that it's McAdoo's job to lose. No idea how he'll turn out as a play caller, but I'm ok with that, at least he's young and he'll hopefully be bringing GB's version of the WCO with him........if the report is true of course.
who is left?
Kubiak and Shannahan? Anyone else?
BTW I live in DC and Shannahan is considered a hack who only got his job b/c of his daddy. Viewed as having ruined RG3 and hated about as much as we hated Sherman. Not sure why anyone would want him here....
We better hire an OC soon because we are running out of options

This isn't a surprise Berk.
Just go back to the start of this thread.
This was entirely predictable. Its what happens when you do things ass backwards. By hiring a new GM without giving him the ability to fire or sign off on Philbin you effectively have Philbin on a 1 year "prove it" contract.
If he flops...again...then the whole staff is out on its rear end at this point next year.
What hot shot young OC candidate is going to take that scenario over job security with an established staff?
None.
We are going to get the best of whatever is left over. That's on Ross and this "weak GM" model he's using.
why sign on with a lame duck coach when you know you've got 3-4 years job security in Detroit or NY.
Detroit has loads of talent on offense to so i'm sure that factored in. I guess the giants do to but I bet that's more about the security.
as for us we'll end up with a former head coach like kubiak or norv effing turner who will wear the assistant hc tag along with oc in case regis gets canned.
Interesting development re McAdoo...kinda reminds me of the whole Matt Flynn courtship two years ago, also from Green Bay. Many thought it would happen, but in the end Philbin passed.
Not going to jump to conclusions re "lame ducks" or anything like that...wasn't in the room and most of the rhetoric being spewn by the local media hasn't been reliable.

I guess that's one way to look at it.
But Flynn was different. We offered him what Philbin thought he was worth... backup money with a chance to compete for the starting job. He got a better offer and took it. Turns out Philbin was right on that assessment.
McAdoo is the guy he wanted over Sherman as OC two years ago. Either he still wanted him or he didn't. If he didn't, why even bring him in? If he did, then why let him leave without a contract? Its not like they were looking for a guy who could come in and compete with another assistant coach for the OC job over the summer.
I don't think we need to wait till the playoffs are over to interview a GM. I don't think that's why we are dragging our feet, we are just clueless
As for the OC, we've interviewed only 3 people and 2 of them are gone and the other is Kyle Freaking Shannahan. And when the other HC vacancies get filled, we will have additional teams competing to fill the OC spot, and those openings will be more attractive than MIAs due to the fact that any HC hire will get at least 2-3 years while Philbin could be in his last season
Does not bode well....

why is Minn and Cle so much worse than us? Minny was in the playoffs last year and Cle has a very solid team with lots of cap space and draft picks and is really just a QB away from contention. And there is no way Cle is going to dump another coach after just 1 season, and extremely unlikely Minn does either, so both jobs have greater long term security than Philbin who enters the season on the hot seat. Given a choice most OC with options would not pick the Phins job over those, no matter how much nicer MIA is as a place to live.
