They are going West Coast. 10 Yd completions mid field doesn't make Touchdowns. I loved Bess. But how many Touchdowns did he have? He was not worth a shit in the Red Zone. I think he is a great player though and a quality person. The Browns could have done much worse.

We don't have a hole at slot wr.
Our system requires 5 guys who ALL can play the slot as well as X & Y spots.
Right now we have 3 guys we know can play all three spots (Wallace, Hartline & Gibson) and we have 2 other we think can...Matthews and Binns.

Really? What if we have a chance at signing Albert or Winston before camp? That $40 million we had in cap space has disappeared and we have a boat load of rookies to sign. Stop making something out of nothing. Its about time this Team found some Nuts.

We didn't give him away for nothing. We traded him and a 7th round pick for Mike Gillisee.

That would certainly fit your narrative better, but its just another thing you are wrong about in this thread.
Sturgis was our LAST pick in round #5. That was our Compensatory pick, which could not be traded.
The pick two spots before that was the one we got from Cleveland for Bess...that pick was Mike Gillisee.

I think that's where Gibson is going to play.
BTW Steviec, were you ever on the Dolphins Message Board on AOL?

With Carpenter's problems over the last few years, along with his salary, I think Sturgis is going to be Miami's kicker. All he has to do, at the very least, is stay close to Carpenter's production during the competition and he has the job.

I hear ya steviec13. Bess was one helluva slot who came to us undrafted and earned his job the hard way. Kept a whole bunch of drives alive. I admired Bess back when he played here at UH, and I remember being totally stoked when he got his chance to play for my favorite NFL team.
Although losing the dude to the Browns hits my gut pretty hard, I have to remain loyal and true to the Dolphins. I understand the direction they want to take, so perhaps if Bess were just a little taller and a little faster he might still be here. At least he didn't head to NE, that would have really torn me up.

Just from my experience, but rarely do you spend a 5th rd pick on a kicker who you dont plan on making the team... Carpenter is going to be a salary dump victim just like Bess. Philbin is a new coach, new system, he wants his guys..
I heard rumblings that Philbin wanted a bigger target then Bess going across the middle. And also that he questioned whether or not Bess could have competed in the last couple games, but chose not to because they didnt mean anything...
I like Bess, and thought he was a good insurance policy, but just like we moved on from R Bush, we moved on from him, also for the purpose that he would have prevented other guys from getting more playing time..
Bush would have been a progress stopper for Lamar Miller and Bess would have been a progress stopper for the other WR's.. Or a backup making top slot WR money... At the end of the day it is what it is, Philbin is making the roster the way he wants it.. And most Sparano guys are not really invited it seems...

Carpenter is gone.
The only reason Ireland is saying all the right things, about how good he is and that its a competition on equal footing, is because he's going to try to trade him.
I don't know anyone who would want to pay the 2.7 mil but in drafting another kicker it invites competition and gives us leverage to restructure Carpenter's contract. Carpenter is definitely gone if he doesn't restructure.
That being said, we didn't spend a draft pick if we didn't think he would win the job. 90% Carpenter is gone.

Doubtful any team will trade for Carpenter. Miami will have to release him, then another team will just have to compete against any others that are interested.
If Miami is able to trade him, Miami will be lucky to get a 7th rounder.
