Devils advocate and thoughts on Dion Jordan

I like DIon Jordan and feel Ireland and Philbin have a place for his unique talents, but I am going to bring up a few legitimate questions about how we will use him...

1) Most people including himself, saw him fitting best in 3-4 OLB position. We run mainly a 4-3 now.

2) He is a bit under weight and strength to be a DE in our system. He needs to put on weight and strength, which means he is a project of sorts

3) His defensive stats were not remarkable for a #3 draft pick

4) In college he first played WR and then TE moving to the defense his sophomore year. Does not have a lot of time at his position...

5) He has had a shoulder injury for a good part of last year, which has prevented him from putting on strength and weight. And will be dealing with this for a few more months.. So putting on a lot of size and strength prior to the start of the season is not something he will be really able to do.. WHich is what he needs most to be an elite edge pass rusher

6) Without him adding strength and size, he could have a tough time against much stronger tackles. WHich could lead to a developmental year..

7) His speed, athleticism, is still there so he almost makes more sense as an ILB this year until he gets stronger... I understand this is not why we drafted him.. But imagine a 6ft 7 middle LB who can rush the passer, cover and play the run... at 248, that bill fits him the most currently.. Once he puts on size and strength, then you move him up to DE.. Or maybe he can truly be a hybrid..

samsam, I like the pick, but I think all of these points are legitimate questions. You don't have to blindly support the pick, to like it.. There are questions with almost every player, these are the ones I see with Jordan... What do you think?

Like you yourself said Crowder. There are questions about any pick.

I remember when at the time of the Draft the opinion was there was NO WAY that Drew Bledsoe could fail.

Dan Marino WAS THE SIXTH quarterback picked in his draft and even disregarding John Elway, that means that there were four other quarterbacks supposedly better than him.

Tom Brady was picked in the Sixth Round for Chrissakes.

So there are always gonna be people projected as Great who are gonna be busts and also people who are not regarded as being worth much who turn out to be great.

What does that suggest about the draft???????????????????????????????

yeah i like the assessment. With our needs at OT I thought that we were getting him to package in a deal with KC for albert. When two more DE were taken with the 5 and 6 picks I realized that miami's intel must have told them that we need to move now. I agree with you in that I am impartial to the move. I think he has promise but I look at him as more of a mid/late round talent. I think #3 you should get a freak like P.Willis who to me is a top 3 talent in any draft.

I personally thought ziggy had more raw skill but we will see how Dion turns out. I personally think that he will be productive and say he plays 10 years I expect him to make the probowl maybe twice. So I think he is solid I just dont know if he separated himself from other DE in the draft. I will say that to move up like we did I think we make a great deal... We will see what happens...

The plan, for now, is to put him in on 3rd down to rush the passer.

Once he learns the nuances (and adds some weight), he will be an every down backer.

Look at it like this Reppa. Just as we were losing Jason Taylor, our only pressure pass rusher, we signed Cameron Wake. They never played together. (I don't think so). Now if all the experts are right, this guy is Jason Taylor reborn. If he IS, then we have Jason Taylor and Cameron Wake, both in their prime, rushing the passer from different angles.

That's pretty hard for an offense to deal with.

And to tell the truth, toward the latter part of the season when Tanny got his sea legs, our problem seemed to be more stopping people from matching our scoring than scoring itself. In other words, we needed help on defense.

I'd also say take Kawaan Short from Purdue with our next pick.

Until we get to see them play during the season, it's all conjecture and guess work. Who knows if this guy is going to need a year to reach his potential? He may be one of the types of individuals who recover fast and work hard to become a great. Ya never know until the ball gets snapped.

It is not the weight that concerns me as much as strength. Jason Taylor was around the same weight although Jordan is probably a bit taller.Jason Taylor was a lot stronger. Jordan will get their, but strength doesnt happen overnight... But with his shoulder injury he can't and hasnt been able to put on upper body strength, which is extremely important for him IMO...None of this is his fault it is just the situation he is in.. I still kind of like him as MLB anyways... His speed is elite even for a MLB..

I cant even consider you an animal because every animal has a brain.

So many questions....so little time.

It's going to come down to can this guy rush the passer or not.

Cameron Wake can. He will require a extra help in protection.

Jordan is the top defensive player in this draft. We got him. The devil does't need an advocate.

He could play SLB as a Von Miller Type but MLB is way out of position IMO. At SLB he still rushes from the outside and he would be blitzing behind Cameron Wake.

Do we even know how strong he is? He looks just as big as JT to me but with no bench test, how do we know what his strength is? I'm sure added strength will come but will tough this year. JT ALWAYS struggles to gain weight. He was listed at 255, Admitted to 245 but even Zach Thomas laughed at that one. he said closer to 240 in the interview with both of them.

I like the pick, we got the best pass rusher in the draft. It was not his call for how many plays he was in on that was the Oregon system. I see a lot of Jason Taylor in the guy.

i'd hate the pick if we gave up more to get him. but we gave up just 1 2d. he's a huge upside player and worth the risk

To be honest, I was surprised by the move up. And we gave up next to nothing to get him.

These are all good questions. And with so many question, why did we use such a high pick?

No, we all have answers to your questions, it's just that everyone on this board has you labeled as "TROLL" and as Truth would say "Don't feed the trolls".

You're obviously either a non-fan looking to stir up shit and get into verbal jousts just so you have something to get you excited while you play Warcraft in your folks basement, or you are the most negative person in all of professional sports fan base. Something tells me it isn't the latter.

BE GONE TROLL! I CAST THEE OUT! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS THEE!

Same as when you trolled Tannihill last year and you were proved DEAD WRONG.

LOL. We used such a high pick because that's what it takes to get the best athlete in the draft. Your rationale makes completely no sense . So much so it proves beyond a doubt that you are not or have ever been a real Dolphins fan. Your comments of late have no fact , only trolling gibberish.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

And you're no longer funny, DK. You've become quite boring.

You're tiring. Only a person with a medical problem would continue to come back here where he was bashed at first, then went to be regarded as uninformed to the point that you are regarded as funny and a source of amusement, and now simply regarded as tiring and boring, the worse of all images.

Tannehill was at the bottom of the pack in NFL QBs. He had one of the lowest ratings in the league, and several time failed to win games when he had a chance.

Just saying I'm "dead wrong" doesn't prove anything. The guy was not playing like a top ten QB.

Wrong on many accounts. I'm a serious Dolphins fan. I came here last year to vent about what I though were poor management decisions about the team. Immediately people started attacking me. No attempt was made to see where I was coming from, I was just called a Jet fan, or whatever.

At this point I don't care what people think. The truth is, I was right about Ireland. Tannehill was not very good last year. The big excuse from everyone on that was that Tannehill had no O-Line or WRs. He helped his WR a little bit in FA, then traded away the teams most productive chain mover from the past few years. He had a chance to beef up the o-line and instead traded away two picks for another reach.

Ireland did little to effectively help Tannehill, but it doesn't really matter. Tannehill isn't that good of a QB. And Dion Jordon is not an every down player.

Ireland is horrible. He just more wastes picks, and misses good value when it appears. The fact that people on this site want to bash me for this makes me think you are all related to the guy.

Why DolfanKing, does not the majority of the sports media and fans share your opinion about how bad YOU THINK Tannehill is.

When they talk about the QBs of that class, they are impressed with Wilson, Tannehill and Luck (Kaepernick was not this class).

Give us links to any sports media that share your opinion that he was a bust as a rookie QB.

PLEASE!

Let's make a bargain. You show us just one link and we'll get off your back.

You, on the other hand, must promise that if you can't, you either leave or never post anything negative about Tannehill, .....deal or no deal?

I agree with DK. To trade up for a guy that is injured and does not fit your scheme does seem bizarre to me. And yes that second round pick we gave up is not nothing. I thought Jordan was the 3rd best DE that could have been picked. I would have preferred the 2 taken after us... Even Jordan said he tried to play with on shouler and couldnt.... if you cant do that in college you sure cant do it in the pros.

Tannehill was no where near good last year. He was better then Henne, but that was about it. I like the kid, he seems to be a standup guy and seems to be willing to get better. I worry that he cannot throw the deep ball at all accuratly.

I however dont think the owner is bad.
