Sounds like u can forget taking a WR early in the draft... We have Hartline, Wallace, Bess, GIbson, Mathews..... Obviously Mathews could be cut for another guy, and I guess Bess could be cut or possibly traded... But at this point, doesnt sound like Ireland wanted anything to do with drafting a WR early once again... We probably now have the highest WR payroll in the NFL....

At this point, I am not a huge fan of this signing. I want an impact WR via the draft (i.e. Patterson or Austin). I hope this move does not prevent that from happening. I also hope he is not making more than Bess. Gibson should not command a huge salary.

I still think we add Austin at 12 (or we should, anyway)

There's a lot to love about Patterson BUT he's pretty high risk IMO. Chances are some team around 22 - 24 is going to feel OK about taking the chance -- but top 10 or 15 is definitely a question mark IMO.

The big questions about Patterson are his life skills and core competency mentally. For a WR in the NFL those are really important considerations. But the kids athletic chops are totally freaky.

Other than that -- there's no sure fire BIG DOG in the draft -- tho there are a bunch of excellent longer term prospects and solid #2 looking players...

This draft is best at DT, OT / OL and TE in the top half. There's only one CB to go nuts over -- tho again there are a bunch of solid prospects.

Right now I think our most difficult puzzle to solve is indeed CB. Unless these dudes are planning on solutions already intact on the roster?

That's one bad ass catch!

I guess St Louie must be double pissed. They wiffed on soLong and we snatched their WR. Oh the pain of Ireland!

AdamHBeasley From what I've heard in recent days, the Dolphins envision a role for Gibson AND Bess. They're trying to be the Packers South.

Maybe we're gonna be passing team?

LOL.

Thill better build-up his throwing arm strength in a hurry!

We're going to need 2 coitusbacks on the field at the same time if we keep adding WRs!

Bess is gone. If not this off-season certainly after his contract expires this year. We'll be drafting a WR to develop and it will be in the first 3 rounds of this draft.

What Ireland is doing, and doing very well is fleshing out the roster so we can draft BPA in every round without considering need.

If he does as good a job in this draft as he did in the last one and has done in free agency so far, this team is going to take a HUGE leap forward this year and will have a core of young players to stay there for a long time.

Now lets sign an OT (Long or Winston) and a DE (Dummerville or Abraham) and we are set.

Gibson can move the chains and is a threat in the red zone, but offers nothing after the catch and is prone to mental mistakes. His 108 yards after the catch were an absurd 167th in the NFL last season. With just one 100-yard game in 54 career contests - Rotoworld

Don't hate him at all.

I like the kid. He's a great story, a nice guy and easy to root for.

He's got real good hands. Excellent quickness and absolutely no speed. And he's about the same size as Tavon Austin.

Like Sam Sam said in another post, he'd be great in the right system.

This isn't that system. If you are going to be his size and line up outside you have to be really fast. He's really slow.

That makes him a one trick pony for us and its a limited trick.

All I'm doing is look at the system we run and what Phiblin has said he wants out of his WR's. Bess just doesn't fit that mold.

That doesn't mean he sucks. Just that he doesn't have a future with us.

If that's the case, I hate to let him walk at the end of the year. I'd rather trade him since he has value to the right team and add another pick to our arsenal this year.

The idea of Tavon Austin in the slot as our 3rd/4th WR and the dynamic he brings to our offense is downright scary.

If you are Bill Bellechick you are going to be up late worrying about how you cover Wallace, Hartline, Austin, Keller and Lamar Miller.

Bess he can account for. Austin in that spot with Wallace blowing the top off the defense has the potential to put our offense in the elite stratosphere.

That's really all I'm concerned with. I'm emotionally attached to the laundry, not every guy who puts it on for a few years.

Davone Bess 5'10 190 lbs

Tavon Austin 5'8 174 lbs

I said about the same size.

Bess is too small and slow to line up wide in a west coast offense. We were forced to use him that way this year and our offense struggled.

You could get by with a guy who's 5'8.5 out there if he runs a 4.25 40.

There are still a few OT's and DE's I'd prefer over Austin, but there isn't a WR in the draft I'd rather have.

He brings a skill set to the table that you can't coach.

In 2012, 57% of the targets for Gibson (targets, not completions) resulted in a first down. That was the #1 percentage among WR in the NFL.

Gibson was only in the slot like 8% of the time so he's not here to replace Bess. My opinion. Of course.

In that case, I'm "about" the same size as Jason Taylor....and "about" as ripped too.

Gibson ran 22% of his routes from the slot in 2011, when Amendola was out for more of the season.

Austin makes us scary if we pick up a decent RB in the draft and Tannehill can hit his receivers

Agree bess may be gone

Dolphinmark.

In this case you're off the mark. It's 8% so check & replace the batteries in your pocket calculator. After that -- sharpen your pencil. And 200 push-ups to boot!

BNF. Out.

It was 8% in 2012. Unfortunately for you, my post was about 2011.

Drafting WRs is always hit-and-miss. We've NEVER drafted an impact receiver in the 1st round, but we've drafted a couple busts. I'm a huge fan of this move.
