Jake has priced himself out of Miami. No way that the Fins should cough up 10 mill a year for a tackle who finished the last two years on injured reserve, and even worse than that, when he was able to play, was on a good Sunday--average. Move Martin to LT and let's pick up a tackle with one of our 2 seconds or 2 third rounders. Someone will probably pay Jake the big bucks he wants (so, good for him and his family), but at this point in his career, he isn't worth those type of dollars.
It is smart to let him test the FA market. I can't think of any team out there that is willing to pay 10 mil for the injury prone 46th ranked tackle.
Jake has a swollen head because he made the PB 4 out of 5 years. He made it last year on reputation alone.
Ireland knows the real reason for his decline. Injury or whatever. This is one time where I hope he really made a low ball offer. I don't even want him wasting a roster spot if this is all the better he can play. We need a better line and Jake almost got Tannehill killed several times last year.
On second thought, I offer him 4 mil a year to play RT and only if I think he can improve.

There's always a way.
But it hinges on two things:
First you have to believe his level of play will improve with health and familiarity with the zone blocking scheme. If you don't believe that then he's not worth half of what he's asking for.
Secondly, the deal could be 5 years/$50 mill with 6-8 mill guaranteed or if the guaranteed money is more, it gets paid out as roster bonuses each year. Essentially making it 5 1 year contracts at $10 mill a year with very limited cap exposure if we cut or trade him.
At the end of the day though, it doesn't seem like Jake is going to take a deal like that.

Had the dolphins drafted matt ryan they would not had to waste picks on busts such as chad Henne, pat white, john beck.
they would had concentrated on receivers tends etc.
And what did we accomplish with pennington and winning the east....where did we pick that year in the 20s.....It just slowed the process of rebuilding this franchise.
2. Sign one of the top 10 ranked FA tackles from the link above. Whoever fits our zone scheme better. Ideally he would start at RT with the assumption that we can....
3. Make damn sure Martin is in the gym all off season building functional strength and continue to develop his technique as a LT.
4. Draft an athletic & versatile lineman in the 2nd or 3rd round who can play LG, RG, LT or RT. This player should be able to start at guard (at a minimum) but also be able to step in for Martin in case he does not step his game up.
5. Move Incognito to RG if possible.
6. Draft another lineman in the 6th round.
7. Bring in minimum contract FA's & undrafted FA's in hopes of finding a diamond in the rough and improve our depth.

Had the new CBA been in place, Ryan would have been the pick. But, under the old system, Long was the much safer selection. It was really difficult to commit $70+M to a rookie QB.
see ya long, I don't think I even want him back since he seems like a total "me first" egomaniac. some balls on that guy wanting 10mm per year after the crap 2 (partial) seasons he just gave us, as the highest paid LT in football

Yeah, but all of those prior years, he was a "deep ball" threat. You basically can say that about any player, Jake Long included, that his last years weren't up to his early years.
Jake Longs last (bad) years were seasons 4 and 5. Way too soon to be on the decline. He should have been in his prime. Even Tony Boselli played as an All Pro until a serious injury in his 7th year (knee). Ironically he suffered from shoulder injuries just like Long. A botched arthroscopic surgery was blamed for ending his career.
If you were willing to pay Richard Marshall 7 million a year for what he has contributed is Jake not worth something along those lines for his potential and past contributions... Obviously I don't think you mortgage the farm for him guaranteeing a lot of money but I am not in the group that is ready to write Jake Longs potential and future career off so easily... IMO Jake Long will clearly have a better year next year with whatever team then any player we might sign to replace him in the Dolphins line up....

I don't think Long sucks, if he's willing to play for a lower salary then great, but if you believe the info out there that he wants 10mil plus..........sayanora. And an emphatic "HELL NO!"on paying guys based on past performance when their play has declined the last two years.
Also, some of this is Philbin running a different system than the one Long is best suited for, not saying he can't be effective in Philbins system, but it's just not built to his strengths.

You are right I thought it was a 2 year 14 million deal, when it was actually a 3 year deal for 16 million.. He ruptured multiple discs in his back less then a month into his first year of the deal.. But God forbid taking any risk with Jake Long.. There are better wasteful uses Ireland is surely to have with all our cap money.. Maybe we can sign big deals to guys like Jake Grove again..
