Derek Cox is a really solid corner. I have had my eyes on him for a while. Later in the week I'll put up a list of all Free Agents I think will be a good fit on the 2013 Dolphins.

Solid corner? Yes, when he's on the field. Cox is turning out to be injury prone.

In 2012 he missed games 1,2,7 & 12.

In 2011 he missed games 2, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 & 16.

We have fallen into this trap before in hiring a player and expecting him to be something that he has never been....healthy (or good).

We did it with Jake Grove and Justin Smiley. I hope Ireland has learned his lesson about this type of player.

Playing 12/16 games at one of the NFL's most demanding positions is not bad...The Dolphins need a stockpile of CB's actually, not just 1 or 2. Guys playing corner are probably the highest risk of being injured out of all positions when you think about it.

Missing 14 games in two years is a negative no matter how you look at it or how you want to frame it.

Justin Smiley played 12 games both years in Miami and everyone considered him a bust.

I don't see Cb as any more damaging to play than RB or WR or OL or any other position. You are no good to the team if you can't play.

The position that has the highest risk of injury is the RB position.

Free agent corners are expensive. Even guys coming off solid years (like Marshall and Patterson last offseason) get $5M per season.

Marshall and Patterson are both under contract, although Patterson can be cut with no cap hit, from what I have seen reported. It wouldn't surprise me to see them go with those two and draft a corner in the first two rounds. It's a lot cheaper.

I think there's also a chance they move Marshall to FS, where he was pretty good in AZ. Then, maybe go after a free agent corner.

I can't help but feel that Smith and his agent will think his market value is much higher than Miami thinks it is. We'll see. It's been 4 years, and its hard to imagine Smith becoming a ballhawk all of a sudden.

Seeing how Champ Bailey whiffed on that last scoring play yesterday, I'm more apt to say draft a CB...don't sign a FA. That's reversed when it comes to WR.

This is true, but on the defensive side of the ball it is the cornerback.

I think safeties take more abuse as they play in the box on occasion and take on RB's and FB's and TE's.

I also think getting rolled on for the defensive line is probably more dangerous and LBers take on the o-line and all of the above.

Seems to me CB is the least dangerous for contact even if they are going full speed.

He was playing injured. He was quite good in 2011 for Arizona.

That may be true of the defensive side but if I were asked overall, I would still say running back.

Unless you talking about a wrecking ball like Eddie Lacy....

OH CHRIS, I SAW HIM IN THE BCS GAME! I LOVED HIM! NOW THAT'S THE KIND OF RUNNING BACK WE NEED.

According to Pro Football Focus, Sean Smith allowed 40 first down conversions and 6 TDs this season. The combined total of 46 was the most allowed by any corner in the league.

Will take a DB somewhere 2-4 and a RB also 3-5

QB's picked on him more than any other CB in the league for a reason.

I would say he has regressed since 2010. After he was benched for Jason Allen, he rallied back and played really well, although he dropped a boatload of INTs. The same can't be said for the last two years, when he has been below average most games.

Rotoworld called CB the deepest position in this year's free agent class.

PFF 2012 grades of the free agents:

Pacman Jones +11.1
Terrance Newman +8.6
Sheldon Brown +7.5
Chris Houston +7.4
Greg Toler +6.8
Darius Butler +5.5
Chris Owens +4.9
Joselio Hanson +4.2
EJ Biggers +3.8
Bradley Fletcher +3.8
Leodis McKelvin +3.8
Michael Adams +3.6
Keenan Lewis +3.2
DJ Moore +3.1
Kyle Arrington +2.6
Zack Bowman +1.7
Marcus Trufant +1.1
Ebert Mack +0.9
Marquice Cole +0.5
Captain Munnerlyn +0.2

For what it's worth, there are 16 more free agent CBs that I would need to list before getting to Sean Smith, at -3.5.

We need big hard hitting center field type safeties, and smaller quick CBs.

Miami Dolphins. Always Perfect.
