wow great points. I am from the philly area and the fact is once johnson died his defense stunk and without that carrying him eagles record went south. On the otherside I was suprised how crappy his offense became.
The problem with reed is that he was terrible at making game time adjustments and even worst he could not adjust even games later. For example when vick was qb teams would send two blizers up the middle to get to vick. For 4 straight games (since copy cat league) and the eagles never solved it... no screen, no TE on hot route, no bringing in more blockers nothing. Yes unfortunately Reid is not as good as the hype...
No way would I take Smith at number 1....talk about a reach.
I agree about Reid needing Johnson. I had the same thought. He is a good offensive coach but needs a stud DC and a QB. Not unlike any other coach in the league....no QB, no job. He probably looks at Smith and sees Donovan McNabb.
Why is it every year the draft is weak in the areas that we need? This year it is offense that is lacking.

I don't know Cap.
Its not like the old days when that top pick was going to get a 60-80 million. The implementation of the rookie wage scale makes it far far easier to trade down than it used to be.
Of course I doubt he'll get anything close to the kings ransom St Louis got for the 2nd pick last year but there are always teams out there that fall in love with a specific player.
They might have to take less than they'd hope for but I'm sure there are a handful of teams that would like to move up for a Jarvis Jones if the price is right.
It wouldn't take much for them to move down 5-10 spots and add a 3rd or two.
They get the guy they want and a few important picks to rebuild with.

That's always a risky proposition. Not all QB's are interchangeable and some are better suited for his offense than others. The problem with dropping down when you really like a prospect is the danger he doesn't make it to your new pick.
Of course this is all speculation, and premature speculation at that, he could just as easily look for a QB in the 5th round as early in the draft.
I just think Barkley is an excellent fit for his offense.
Reid knew what he had to choose from before he took a job. My guess is that he likes one of the QB's in the draft. Compare the numbers between McNabb and Smith. Geno was twice as productive and everyone thought McNabb was a reach.
He could have just went after the San Diego job where they already have a Qb in place but then again he wants total control.
The cowboys hired Monte Kiffin as DC, strong move by them IMO....

eesti- USC was a big dissappointment this year so that is why they bash him... However Kiffin is a legend, this is the first year in ages his defense has not been dominant... Maybe USC with its bowl bans and scholarship limitations was what restricted Kiffin's success this year... Kiffin is a defensive genius IMO....I would trade Coyle for Kiffin in a second....

Kiffin was also the DC in Ten in 09 before going to USC. They were the 28th ranked defense that year in PPG given up and yards given up. That's 31st in pass defense and 10th in rush defense. Not a very good pass defense but I don't remember the details. Quite a difference between rushing and passing defense though.
I know they had Courtland Finnegan and Jason McCourty at CB and Chris Hope and Michael Griffin at Safety.
it may not be too hard to look like a genius with players like like Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, Simeon Rice, Anthony McFarland, John Lynch and Ronde Barber. That's 4-5 HOF type players.
I guess we'll see how DeMarcus Ware and Anothony Spencer look as 4-3 DE's.
eesti- I am an sec guy, the Volunteers defense under Kiffin was pretty bad ass...... Volunteers were a 30 point underdog going into number 1 Florida at home, and Monte's defense kept them in the game, I think Florida won by ten because of the plaY.. They also should have beat #1 Bama that year, remember big Terrence Cody, blocked a gimme game winning field goal or Volunteeers knock off bama that year. He held #1 bama to 12 points they lost 10-12 ... They knocked off the game cocks that year... If you go back and watch the games, Monte's defense was what got the Vols turned around..... playing against the best teams in the country as huge underdogs all of 2009... The year before they were 5-7... IMO that team was destined for the stars in a one year turn around before Lane took the USC job....

This scenario should seem familiar with Dolphins fans (i.e. Saban).
The Eagles' owner did just what our guy did....kept pursuing their guy until they finally convinced him this was the job he should have (even tho Saban and Kelly both didn't "really" want it).
I hope things turn out differently for both Kelly and the Eagles, but I see disaster written all over this.
Who is the last college coach to come to the NFL and have success as a HC?
Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll had lots of previous NFL experience so besides them...I can't think of any. Even "the great" Nick Saban couldn't handle the NFL. It was too stressfull for his bitch arse.

Agreed, except this guy is going from laid-back, marijuana-is-the-official-state-flower Oregon, to PHILADELPHIA, where they openly admit to being complete obnoxious a-holes as fans.
The Saban/Kelly comparison is apt. If Kelly's preference is to stay in college (which it seemed to be when he returned after "rejecting" the nfl) and only money convinced him to change his mind, then I don't think he really is committed to being an nfl coach and like Saban, will return in just a few years.
