BNF- cool, since he has none but Long with 5 times as many picks as Mueller, you let me know when it happens, and keep holding on to those dillusions if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside about having Jeff Ireland as the guy building our team... Yet we have had 3 consecutive losing seasons.. And our fired HC, just put up over 40 with an offense that sucked last year in NY. Baby T, was pumping TD's for NY not field goals... we have Ireland to thank for that... at the same time our new coach and system still couldnt get in the end zone... hmmmm...makes you wonder doesnt it...

Are you people serious?!? Whatever we may think of Ireland, the rumors quoted in this article are second- and third- hand. If you think that is "official", then you might be interested in some land I have in the Jersey Pine Barrens.

Well said, I agree on this point. The fact of the matter is that Ireland has blown some 2nd and 3rd rounders and none of his picks have turned into instant impact, pro-bowl level players. Basically, Ireland has yet to hit a home run but has hit quite a few singles, some doubles, and struck out a few times as well. However, those "home run" guys are hard to come by. It's also a lot easier for these younger guys to have instant success when they come into a successful program surrounded by talented veterans. The lack of "home run" players is what drives fans to grab the pitchforks and start the fireland chants. It's a fair point, every successful team in the NFL right now has hit a few homeruns with their picks so Ireland needs to show the ability to get the home run player to take Miami to the next level. Maybe it's Tannyhill or maybe someone on the team emerges but it needs to happen.

I think its a fair point for someone to look at Ireland's track record in comparison to past GMs and point out that, "hey Ireland doesn't completely suck because we have seen Gms that completely suck". Ireland is obviously not a top GM but he isn't a horrible one either, he is average but young and hopefully improving. Another good point is, if we fire Ireland then who is in charge. I'm not completely against removing Ireland, but we better have a damn good replacement lined up and not sign some chump that will be even worse. We have a lot of cap space and draft picks next season and I don't want someone that will come in and try to be splashy but end up wasting it all and leaving us stuck like the Raiders. I would rather have Ireland because he at least doesn't overpay players in FA, makes good trades, and will take good, but probably not great, players in the first round. We can tread water with that performance from a GM until we can find a suitable replacement or Ireland shows improvement. Bottomline, unless Philbin knows of a GM with skills then I would rather have Ireland than see a Ross/Peterson led search of a GM next offseason.

Wow...after one week Sparano went from an incompetent moron to an offensive genius and Ireland gets blamed for it. Classic.

Just for the record, I'm NOT a fan of Ireland. Tho I love those northern Irish ladies with dark hair and blue eyes. Volatile yet tender. Long-legged and short-tempered. Yum.

Beyond that, I have hopes that we've accumulated more talent than others want to recognize or believe, tho I do agree we have whiffed on some important picks and been to formula driven in a number of cases. But I believe that's correctable, and I think there's evidence we're going in the right direction, and if (???) that's the case, I wouldn't be in a hurry to make a radical change.

I think dolphin1423 made some very important points; it is difficult to hit homeruns, especially consistently. But we have a few players that could emerge as top shelf players in the near future such as Pouncy and Odrick and Smith. If Jerry can mature and be a dedicated Pro and Martin improves as projected -- the core OL looks pretty solid.

And even tho Wake and Bush were not drafted, they have to count in some way on the "impact" side and therefore count towards Ireland's competency.

Vernon and Miller are both blue-chip athletes that are 21 years old and just emerging as grown men. They both seems to have good character and attitudes, and are very coachable. I think they have the chance to be impact players, but time will tell.

Another point dolphin1423 touched on is the overall "product" a player in plugged into and how well the players talents match with the system -- allowing him to play good ball and contribute in an impactful way. This is an area we've been woeful in. Both developing players and designing/implementing a winning system then drafting players that fit the spec.

Is there any doubt where Project BIG came from? So we invested a number of drafts with that schematic as the reference point to evaluate players... And BTW, for those of you who were around a few years back, I was 100% on the protest side and wanted the entire regime eradicated (including the Sloth)!

Point is, some historical perspective is needed in this, along with the recognition that our scouting focus and resulting draft will be to find players that match the spec Philbin & Co. want for their design. I think Ireland can adapt and find those players, furthermore I believe there evidence he's already doing that. But the equation will not be solved with just one draft. But check out the draft ammo we're accumulating! That's good news for the future...(and oh how we love the "future" around here!)

Last, I get the fact (like a hammer over he head) that some around here don't think Ireland is capable of delivering the results and will just screw-up all those picks and miss a bunch of blue chips. That's the bottom line. But I don't see it that way. I think there's verifiable evidence (albeit NOT overwhelming) that Ireland is getting better at his job and maybe (???) him and Philbin can be a winning combination.

The benefits Ireland offers are as follows:

He's young and has a lot of upside to his career.
He's a very hard worker and is dedicated to his profession.
He's smart and seems to be learning from his mistakes.
He's got a respected eye for talent and uses a lot of different resources to find players.
The longer he sticks around the more connections he makes and the more efficient he'll be.

But most of all, his career is now directly linked to Thill. If Thill turns into a legit Pro coitusback and throws the pig like the dickens, Ireland will be our GM for many years to come.

My opinion. Of course.

I don't hate everything about this org, far from it. I just think the GM is incompetent and the owner is worse. What I hate is what they are doing to this team (for the record I also hated what Wanny and CamMoron did as well). If I didn't care so much about this team it wouldn't bother me. Maybe if I cared less and was less of a fan I could be content with the "wait and see" approach after FIVE years of Ireland.

Ireland had nothing to do with many of the players you and other posters excoriate(rake over the coals)- if you think Ireland had ANY input when that fool Parcells was here, you are WRONG.

No No No...don't you understand the philosophy?

Parcels gets the credit for the good moves and Ireland gets the blame for all the bad ones.

Right, berk. When it comes to perennial all pro Jake Long, it was Ireland who did it. But anyone bad picked during the time that Parcells AND Ireland were both here was the fault of that "fool Parcells."

I have a simple rule. I have a simple test. If it happened after he became GM, he gets the credit........or blame if appropriate.

If you watched any of "Hard Knocks", you know that he HAS said that about certain players. The coaches just disagreed. Ireland isn't fool enough to keep players in spite of the coaches. If the coaches don't believe in a guy they aren't going to invest any time in the guy, not just to appease the GM.
