captkoi,
Pretty ironic that as I read your opening post the name that popped into my head was Paul Warfield as the only guy I could put up there to rival Rice.

I remember watching him with the adjective in mind that always seemed to fit was how "fluid" he ran. He seemed to run and catch the ball with such grace that he seemed like he was in a different gear than the rest.

Not talking about blazing speed (he was fast) but football fast more than track speed fast. Mentally fast and gracefull, great routes.

You have one other vote for Paul Warfield - As unpopular as it may be ion this forum, I'd bet half of them have never seen much of him

thumbs upthumbs upthumbs up Warfield - The complete receiver

nicely stated, Speaking of 'complete', Paul was also able to block...I've seen him do that a few times on those famous guard-pulling runs we used to do.

And funny you mention fluidity- when Paul went up for a ball it almost looked like he was running up an imaginary stepladder---that was my impression as a kid watching him. He was very, very graceful.

(edited for dumbass spelling error)

A & O: - He is the GOAT.

You'll have to explain this one to me if you are referring to Paul Warfield. I don't see how anyone that ever actually saw him play or how he conducted himself off the field could arrive at that conclusion.

Sure you are referring to Paul Warfield?

The man was nothing short of amazing in poise, class, and skill as a wideout.

What did you mean by "He is the GOAT"?

Yes, Greatest of All Time. Rice that is.

So did you mean Paul Warfield was a regular type of "goat," no capital letters, A & O?

I never even mentioned goat and Warfield together.

I said Jerry Rice is the G.O.A.T.

If I was to actually call Warfield a goat, my Dad would probably beat the shit out of me.

Greatest reciever/ Sure. Absolutely. But I enjoyed watching Barry Sanders run more. That guy was as graceful as it gets.

I brought up the assertion that Dan might not be the greatest QB ever, and got ripped for it.
As for Jerry Rice, this idea might not be so contentious because he wasn't a Fin. Paul Warfield was so smooth on the field, the idea he might have been the greatest has, I think, merit. What might his stats have looked like if he had played on a pass-happy team for 20 years like Rice did?
However, there is another name I would throw out there- Lance Allworth.
Of all the positions on the football field, the WR position has the most guys that can legitimately claim to be the best-it is unquestionably the closest.

Longevity does NOT equal "best"-if it did, George Blanda would have to be the best QB (he DID win several championships) and Dwight Stevenson wouldn't be in the HOF.

No, he wasn't. Raymond Berry is widely acknowledged as the hardest -working WR that ever played this game-and even though he didn't have the size or speed of Rice, he has to be in the discussion too.

Don't start on RB's. Ever see Jim Brown run?

If that was directed at me (this quote function thing is so nifty--many of you should check it out some time), I don't think I said it DID equal "best," But it could be a tiebreaker of sorts.

One guy is completely awesome, lights it up on the field consistently for X number of years....another guy is completely awesome, lights it up, consistently, for 7 years longer than the first guy did....that could put him over the top. In my opinion.
