Could Martin signal the end of J Long?

If we aren't going to re-sign him then he needs to be traded.

Its economics Sam sam.
You have 120 mill a year to spend on 53 players or so.
Long already makes $15 mill and he wants a raise despite the fact that the cap he was projected to be playing his current contract under was higher then what they are actually playing under.
Long is a great player, but just how much of you cap do you want to devote to a position that's value has diminished league wide?
Just look at the last ten Super Bowl winners...ONE had a LT drafted in the first round.
If Long wants more than we are willing to spend, then he needs to be traded. there is absolutely NOTHING to be gained by keeping him for another 8-8 season and letting him walk after.

The signing bonus counts, but it is prorated over the life of the contract. And Long is only making $11M.

Yeah but his cap number is $13 mill.
He wants more.
I have no idea how much more but with his injury history I'm more than a little hesitant to just hand him a blank check.
Out of loyalty Long should resign at a discout -- he's already made huge $$$ and had no business being #1 overall. Ireland / Parcells already allowed him to stash cash for the rest if his life.
Matt Ryan would have gotten killed behind whatever line the Dolphins would have fielded in 2008 (without Long). Remember how brutal the pass protection was under can cameron?
culpepper got killed. It looked like he never played QB in his life he had like half a second to deliver the ball...that were one of the worst OLs we've ever had.

He's been in the Pro Bowl every year. letting him go would be retarded. Plus I love my #77 jersey!

I wouldn't want it either, but this is a wierd transition in the NFL, we have very expensive, high first rnd picks from a few years ago that are gonna want raises, and with the lower salary cap now, it's really not feasible. Like Truth said, he's already one of the top paid LTs in the league, how much higher can you go?

Yeah.
What if we are offering $13-$15m and he wants 18-20?
Can't force him to sign and can't just throw money at him...he's not irreplaceable.

Back when we had Hudson Houck...and the talent on that line wasn't nearly what we have now.

At PFF, they basically graded out equal in 2008 and 2009. Long graded higher in 2010, when he played through injuries all year. Thomas graded out higher in 2011.
Regardless, the Thomas deal will be Long's benchmark. He will get at least equal to that.
For me, you just have to wait and see how healthy he is this year. If he breaks down, you have to let him go. If he is healthy, you re-sign him, because he is dominant. His contract is not nearly the problem that Dansby's is ($12.5M this year, because Dansby is not dominant.
There is no incentive to get him to agree to an extension now. It won't free up any cap money. He is going to get a yearly salary that is basically what he is making now. It won't save us anything.
For cap savings, the guys you need to look out for as trade/release candidates are Moore, Fasano, Incognito, and McDaniel. I'd say Dansby, but no other team is touching him at that cap number. At least not until during the season if some good team gets desperate at LB.
