nothing like creating another need heading into the draft. odds of taking a DL in 1st or 2d just increased

I don't get it. What's with Ireland's constant habit of releasing players that not only offer depth but could be packaged in a trade? He let Jason Allen go for nothing. He let Matt Roth go for nothing. He let Donald Thomas go for nothing. Heck, we might have been able to get something for Chad Henne had Ireland not waited until the end of his contract! I mean, how about a 7th-round pick? SOMETHING???

Is Merling REALLY that much of a pain in the butt? It's not like he's Brandon Marshall. With a new D-Coordinator, maybe Merling would have shaped up. Now we're left with yet ANOTHER hole.

Hey Monte,

Nobody would have given us a bare hamburger from McDonalds for journeyman like Matt Roth and Donald Thomas.

we could've gotten something for matt roth. a bunch of teams put in waiver claims on him when he was released and he went to the browns who had a high waiver slot.
as for merling, I think at one point we could have gotten something for him, though not much. I think we transition tagged him in the hopes someone would sign him, giving us a second round pick. that was never going to happen, but I wonder is there a lower tag that could've been available to use? I have no idea, but we'd be more likely to see someone sign him if it cost them just a low pick.
anyway, it's moot, and yet another 2d round bust for this team. I mean how hard is it to hit on a 2d rounder? and remember merling really was a 1st round pick---pick 32, bc the pats forfeited their #1 in spygate. just a horrible pick, and we passed on some good players instead (desean jackson etc)

Ok..those were bad examples, but I still think we could have unloaded Merling last year when we were pretty loaded on the D-Line and gotten SOMETHING in return.

Dude! C'mon, you are better than this.

There are plenty of things to criticize Ireland for.

Failing to be able to trade a cb who SUCKED while he was here, a lb who faked a groin injury as a ploy to re-negotiate his contract, a 6th round OL coming off a broken foot, who took 3 months to find a job after being cut before landing with the LIONS, and who is now on his 3rd or 4th team, should NOT be among them.

And HENNE? Wow. The guy was our starting QB! We were hoping he'd play well enough to be the guy long term. Then he suffered a SEASON ENDING injury in what....week 4? How do you trade him after that?

Ireland has actually done a good job finding extra late picks in the draft or getting value for castoffs. He got Reggie bush for johnathan Amaya. He got picks from kc for cast off olineman. He got a pick from Seattle for mare...etc...etc...etc

It takes two teams to make a trade. Just because a deal doesn't get made doesn't mean there was no effort made to find one.

It was ALMOST all worth it with that INT for a TD he had against the Jets in his rookie year.

No we couldn't.

Roth faked a mysterious groin injury in camp as a ploy to renegotiate his contract.

First off, we put him on the PUP list in pre-season as a result of this "injury". That meant we COULDN'T trade him. He came off the pup list a day or two before the trading deadline. Who is going to give up even a 7th round pick for a guy you don't even know is healthy since nobody has seen him practice in 2.5 months?

Picking a mid round pick up on waivers when he has 2 months left on his rookie contract is NOWHERE NEAR the same thing as being interested in trading for a guy who just missed 3 months with a "groin injury".

I'm not surprised they released him, i'm surprised at the timing of it being draft week.

Before the draft is the best time to do it.

That way there's chance someone signs him. That could change how they prioritize that position and maybe it pushes a guy to you in he draft as a result.

You have a very selective memory dude. Jason Allen was our starting CB opposite Davis for the first half of that season. He led the team in Ints. He's also 2nd in the NFL in INTs for the last few years.

Oh, and he was, hands down, our BEST ST player!!!

Yeah...he sucked alright.

We gave Henne WAY too much time to prove he was worthless.

the timing tells me we were always planning on cutting him, just tagged him in the hopes someone would bite and we'd get a 2d round pick (yeah right). I think the deadline for tagged players to sign offer sheets just passed, so I think we were just waiting out the deadline before making this move. Not bad in theory, but no one was ever going to sign Merling at the cost of a 2d rounder

Yes, he did suck when he was here. I didn't say he didn't improve after he left but he DID suck as a dolphin...

Just to recap his career here:

71 games over 4.5 years.

8 ints, 1 ff, 0 sacks, 17 passes defended, lord only knows how many completions against him

So for the 16th pick in the draft we got roughly 1.8 picks, 3 passes defended and Not much else every year.

Sure...it's my memory that is selective...

Whats next? Are you going to remind me how good Ted Ginn was?

I give Allen credit. He improved as a player after we cut him. He's now 'decent' instead of shitty.

Now you are just hatin.

He got less time than drew brees and the way his hall of fame career has gone its silly to say HENNE got enough time. He got a fair shot for sure but chances are he's not done developing as a qb.

I see it's not worth having a rational discussion with you.

What could have changed in the last 2 weeks that made them go from giving him a Tender to cutting him? This Guy (Irlend) and his way of thinking have me totally baffled.......

this is actually quite logically. we tendered him in the hopes someone would sign him and we'd get a 2d rounder. no one did and the deadline for signing tendered players just passed. so we cut him. actually it was done just right.

I'd like to see us get something for him too. Why not trade him during the draft for a nickle kicker on anything we're offering. Hate to get nothing for something we had a pretty high pick for - Wasn't he a 2nd rounder?

Technically he was a 1st rounder, because the Pats gave up the 32nd pick in that draft.

Not sure I have any stats, but it seems like the fins are about the worst team in the league at getting value out of draft picks they decide to move on from.

Almost like they act like children and dump them versus behave like busineess brokers, and get all they can from the investment. (Ginn, roth ... on and on)

That might be part of the disrespect towards Irelend from the players. He kind of treats them like children not pro athletes.

Anyhow it looks like Wake was the only player absent from the Mini camp. Without Wake WTF is playing DE? Irlend better put his ego away and get on it or QB's that play us will have a feild Day with 0% pressure.
