Earthquake!

Now that was cool. I am in Chester, Virginia which is about 40 miles from the epicenter.

Initially, I thought a helicopter was just above my house. I went outside and realized that it was an Earthquake. I have a huge livingroom window that was bowing back and forth. To capture the moment, I just stretched out on the ground and felt the Earth shake beneath me. I hope we get a aftershock now.

Anyone care to share their experience? I know that this isn't a Phin topic, but it is so rare around here.

I feel sorry for the East Coast. Here in California, after the EarthQuake in the early 70's, they said, Damn, we had the Quake of 1933 and the Great San Francisco Quake of the early 1900's, it's time to demand that all buildings be Earthquake safe.

But the East Coast has no such protection.

Hope everyone is safe, I've only been in some small tremors when I worked in LA back in my twenties...But being a south FL guy, the earth shaking is a super strange experience.... Now Hurricans thats another matter, I grew up surfing in the eye's... Be safe Virgina/DC area folks.

Not specificly for earth quakes but we have pretty impressive building codes because of Hurricanes where i am from, so we have stronger then avg, structures.. Not sure how they would deal with shaking but buildings can flex an handle tremendous wind loads here... I have a family house in the abaco bahamas, that is about to get pounded, within 30 hours.. From sizemic movement to twirling winds all impacting the east coast...

We had one here in Colorado early this morning. Trinadad, which is south and east of Denver. 5.0 on the scale. I did not feel it but I guess many in the Den area did.

Last one here that I flet was way back in '67. Thought a truck hit the building.

I'm not religious or superstitious, but this thing hit 80 miles from D.C. and hurricane Irene is tracking towards D.C. as well. Is this a sign?

I was in my office in downtown DC when it hit. I thought it was an explosion somewhere that rocked the floor since I didn't know we got quakes here in DC, I mean WTF?? Anyway we all evacuated out, along with all the other blgs downtown. Everyone's OK and now back in the office to the grind!

so thumper you're just going to drop all pretense and out yourself as thunder/mia1/stunner?

crowder, I don't think DC has had a quake like this in decades. no one I talked to had ever remembered being in one. my first thought it was caused by a bomb or some kind of attack--pretty sure I wasn't alone in that thought!

Thumper has been a good boy and improved his writing. Welcome back, but keep a clean nose. Watch the plain clothes. You don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows.

That doesn't help Crowder. What you have to understand is that the strength of the building has nothing to do with it. Well, it has something to do with it because the weaker the building the more that will collapse on you.

But the problem is the shifting nature of the ground underneath you.

So you can have a solid castle but if the ground shifts so that the left half is slanted into the ground and the right half is sticking up into the air, the house will have to be rebuilt.

I was in Silver Spring MD just finishing a job...when I felt the earth shake. It's very disconcerting when the ground moves when you are standing on concrete.

Next up... a Hurricane.

Felt it a little bit in Boston.

I'd just scooted my chair up to my desk and bumped it a little bit. Computer screen shook a little.....then didn't stop shaking for about 15-20 seconds.

Some floors of my building evacuated, but most on my floor didn't even notice.
