I'm not suggesting that speed is the top requirement...just that Ireland has clearly added speed to the list of requirements where it has been clearly de-emphasized in the past. It is no longer just SIZE, SMARTS, & Discipline.
We have been left with a plodding, unexplosive offense.
According to Ireland, Speed (rightly so) is now involved in a shift of offensive philosophy.
We currently did not have a systematic approach that would allow speed players to thrive. The results were lacking big positive plays and yeilded big negative plays on special teams.
Ireland has already set his draft board. Now he is in the process of removing players that don't fit the blueprint. I am very interested in seeing how much he will really emphasize speed in this draft because of past neglect.
It wouldn't hurt my feelings if we added these players:
A speedy QB? I'm more concerned with the speed of the ball coming out of his hands than how fast he runs. It's not like we're going to run the option or anything
Speedy TE? Doesn't hurt, but a TE is supposed to be big and physical with hands like glue. Speed comes after that.
Speedy RB? Doesn't do any good if he can't get into the open field. The O-Line and FB need to create running lanes. A RB should be able to break tackles as well as catch the ball out of the backfield. Slow RBs have been VERY successful in the NFL. It doesn't hurt to have a speed guy who can get around the corner, but your primary back, your workhorse, (and this is also true of Sparano's offense) is usually a power guy that can run inside.
WR is the ONE position on offense where speed is essential. Defense is a different story (as LBs AND DBs benefit from being fast), but on offense speed is not always the formula to success.

You do realize that most exciting QB to watch last season was Mike Vick who happens to be the fastest QB in the NFL.
What can a speed QB add? He can extend plays that allows receivers more time to get open down field. He can convert on critical third and forth down plays with his feet and extend drives. He can create the need for the defense to assign a shadow player for containment.
The speed QB I suggested is not lacking in arm strength.
I believe that adding speed at the other skill positions is a critical element to producing explosive plays.

Yeah, but who played in the Superbowl? Big Ben and Aaron Rodgers. Neither is particularly mobile.

only 59 mph? What did Marino throw, because that just seems weak to me?

Not sure about Henne, but Dan played baseball too. That MIGHT be his fast ball speed.
