According to profootballfocus.com, Atogwe graded out as the 6th best FS in the league last year, and 15th overall among all safeties. Chris Clemons ranked 61st among all safeties. Atogwe graded out as the 2nd best run defender at safety. In coverage, he was 35th. By comparison, Clemons was 41st against the run and 73rd in coverage.
The rankings on Clemons were based on the entire season, but he was a MUCH different player in the 2nd half than he was in the 1st. Atowge is an average FS at best. I'm not sure he's really an upgrade on Clemons.

Clemons was a much worse player in the second half of the season. Through his first 8 games, he had a cumulative grade of +0.1. His cumulative grade over his last 7 games was -4.2. His two best games of the year came in week 1 and week 4.

Those rankings are bunk. Did you actually WATCH the games?

Of course, and Clemons was exposed a lot more as the season went on. I felt a lot worse about him going forward as the season went on. He has very poor ball skills. And he takes bad angles on many plays in front of him. Now, we've learned that he was playing with a groin injury most of the second half. So, maybe that explains some of the decline and why Reshad Jones got playing time. But, the groin injury doesn't change the poor ball skills.
Clemons allowed 3 TD passes to his man, allowed an average of 19.8 yards per catch, and allowed a passer rating of 118.2. He also missed 10 tackles. In comparison, Atogwe allowed 2 TD, 14.6 yards per catch, and a passer rating of 74.0. And he missed just 5 tackles.
Omar Kelly pointed out on Twitter that Miami has passed on Atogwe twice in free agency. That is very misleading. In 2009, Atogwe had the franchise player tag. In 2010, Atogwe was a restricted free agent with a $7M tender offer. Atogwe could be much more affordable this time around, and it would not surprise me to see Miami interested, as FS is a position on defense that is definitely not settled.
I'm not sure what you guys are remembering. Clemons had trouble early in the year and improved steadily as our overall secondary improved. There have been a few defensive players released lately, but I'd rather spend our money on offense.

Good God, man! Why are we mucking with the defense?

Even better, for once, don't muck with something that works. Two years ago our defense lost games for us. What did we do? We improved the defense and ALSO mucked with the offense by completely changing out the interior O-Line.
This past year the defense kept us in games...but our offense let us down. How about we resist making major changes to the defense and just worry about the offense instead?
