Yea, it's just hard to know if his processor will run at NFL speed by watching college games.

I would not trade up to get him. I would consider taking him at #15 depending on who else was there. The thing with him for me is that he won the Heisman...can't shake the idea that he'll be a relative flop, as are the vast majority of Heisman Quarterbacks.

I'd rather have one of the pocket guys vs Newton and all of his athletic ability.

But Cam's a much better prospect IMO.

Not everone who wins the Heisman Trophy and a National Championship is "bad medicine."

How would he be as a running back? That is a crucial question. The reason is that we are in as much need of an RB to replace Ricky and Ronnie as we are a QB.

This way, if he falls to us at 15 and Gabby and Mallett are gone, it would not be a bad pick.

Now I know that there are some clowns on this board who think that our back up running backs can step in when Ricky and Ronnie are gone. I mean Patrick Cobbs and Lex Hilliard? Come on. Put down the pipe.

Like I said in another post. The way you draft is that in each round you pick the best person you can for any one of your top needs. Our needs are O-Line, RB, and QB (in my opinion I know many differ) but although Cam may not be a GREAT passer, drafting him with an alternative eye to running back might not be that bad particularly since it would set up a competition between He and Henne for the Number 1 QB spot.

He is on level with the best year Sam Bradford ever had before his shoulder injury. He has a bit higher Qb rating then Bradfords. and 1/2 percent lower completion percentage. Bradfor blew them all away in passing TD's with 50 in 2008 and 55 total that year. Cam had 50 total

and correction Ryan had one more TD pass then Newton did in his best year. Newton had 30 this year Ryan had 31 in his best year. But RYan only had 33 total that year compared to Newtons 50

I doubt that most folks who think Cam is a running qb have never seen him play 5 or more games. The guy is a passer. He runs because they call running plays for him. If he had to he could drop back and pick you apart all day (that is college teams)

Cam had insane rushing numbers, something like 1500 yards and 20 TD's

Being 6'6 and his playing style is going to get him hurt alot in the NFL.

Steve Young wasnt a run first QB, but prob the last SB winner who ran alot in the nfl, but lets face it his team was stacked.

Again, a he is not a run first QB. His passing numbers are better then or equal to all the top passer's who have been drafted and are starting and considered franchise QB's over the last 3 years. You can't just ignore his passing stats Mia... He throws first but isnt afraid to run.. Arent you the same guy that wants running QB TYler THigpen to start...You are very inconsistent in what you want and like and it doesnt add up, there must be more to it.

If Pat White was 6'6 and 260, his NFL career is a different story....

Mark Ingrahm would be the pick if we wanted a RB at 15 IMO. But I agree with Chyren in that Newton adds to the running attack, and creates a threat and diversity to the possible running attack. Do you hand it to Polite, the RB, or a QB draw...

Hey, folks I never suggested that we switch his position. I said draft him at QB and if it does not work out, we have someone to run the wildcat and Pat White was on the other end of the spectrum and to little and frail to be even a QB, let alone an RB, in the NFL.

From what Cam's defenders on this board say, his passing numbers are not that bad but I'll tell you that rushing yardage in college more accurately translates into future rushing yardage in the pros than does passing yardage so all of you guys who think the prospect of him being an NFL running back is ridiculous well....

Newton is a spread "system" QB. He'll be a project QB in the NFL. In other words, he'll have no immediate impact. He needs to learn an entirely different game, so he'll be holding a clipboard for 1 year minimum.

Now if he had all those numbers out of a pro style offense as a pocket passer, then yes, he'd be golden and worth the risk.

I'm all for tanking next season in order to get Luck who'd be NFL ready. Why settle for less? If you're going to draft a QB in the first round, get one who could play as a rookie if needed. Actually, there's no doubt in my mind that Luck will be an immediate starter when he enters the pros.

Exactly why waist a high first round pick on a project.

The spread offense and its hybrid's like the spread flex are spreading throught the NFL.
And the Spread also has alot in common with the west coast offense as well.
TO suggest Cam can't play pro ball becasue of his offense in College is foolish, the NFL has adapted... THey use to say you cant run the spread in college division 1..... DO you remeber that, all of you experts on offensives schemes and the capability of QB's to play outside and inside didfferent formations...
Last time I checked the best team in the last decade, the Patriots and Brady like to use the spread offense to attack..
SO you guys that say, he cant becuase of the spread offense are just regurgiatating someone else's outdated message... That as a philosophy has all but been abandoned.

CHyren, are you positive we have the QB of our future on the team, I am not... I wouldn't cut Henne either because I am not convinced he is a bust either... However, if you want to be among the elite, you need an elite QB, until I am sure we got one, I believe we should keep taking stabs at it, doubling down, and let the competition begin and the best man win...
