He’s very well respected. Proven to have made a big difference with the Dolphin D. Notoriously meticulous and well organized. Smart. Well groomed. And he’s already in Miami.
On the flip side. If he get's passed over, what are the odds he stays?
Some think Nolan got really POS deal in SF. Specifically being saddled with that garbage QB (humm, sound familiar).
Anyway, I’m not advocating for the man but he is definitely HC material IMO. And it’s reasonable to say he is by far the best coach on our staff.
Plus there’s more than one precedent for a HC getting a second chance and succeeding in a big way. The smart ones learn from their mistakes and grow into the HC role.
He wasn't "stuck in a bad situation." He was just a bad head coach. Just talk to some 49ers fans. They dumped him for Mike Singletary (also a bad head coach) and are GLAD that they did so, even though Singletary is about to get canned for being a trainwreck.
why does everyone think that is Nolan was the HC, there would be no drop off in the defense? He would no longer be the DC or devoting his full time to the defense, but would be the HC focused on other areas. We'd have a different DC, even if he'd be running Nolan's scheme (couldn't we have a current D coach here next year run that same scheme if Nolan leaves?). Was SF such a great D when he was HC there? I'm in favor of paying whatever it takes to keep him as DC, but if the only way to keep him around is to make him HC, I am not in favor of that. As everyone's pointed out, he was a bad HC with SF and I'm not sure he's any upgrade over Sporano.
It seems Mr. Nolan is not getting any traction at all.
BTW how badly has the Dallas offense slipped since Garrett was made HC?
Have you noticed they're actually playing better?
IMO Nolan is hands down a superior coach to Sparano.
Mike, if you're reading this, I think you've got to be considered for the job. Maybe you don't get it (if we land a fish like Gruden) but you deserve to be in the running.
Whatever happens, please stay in Miami!

I'm not arguing for or against him, but can someone give specifics on why he was considered such a bad HC in San Fran? Dictator, un-organized, bad clock mngmt., team quit on him etc?
I'm worried about losing him as a DC. If he's a HC he won't be able to dedicate the time to the defense to keep it dominant. If he DOES decide to keep his hands in the defense, he'll end up another Cam Cameron.

I really didn't follow the situation in SF that much but some of the league insiders think he got a bad deal there - and was made the scapegoat (in effect) for the crap QB they had (Alex Smith).
The team never got above 500 and he was fired mid-season '08. Really a similiar experience to Billy Goat in Cleveland (tho I'm not saying Nolan would be a cheat like Billy).
BigNasty: You are def right that he should be in consideration for the job. However, people seem to think just because he turned our defense around that he's HC material for our organization. Folks, there are a lot of other considerations that go into being a good HC other than just being able to coordinate a defensive game plan. Try not to confuse putting a good defensive product on the field with being able to be the head coach. It's a big difference in the job description and the things required of the person.

Thank you. It's unbelievable that people continue to float the idea that Nolan is a great head coach who was somehow screwed over by awful ownership and no talent in SF. Quite the opposite, he was responsible for bringing in most of that awful talent and then did a lousy job coaching it -- which is what actually prompted the York family to take a more active interest in the team.
You ghotirule, don’t get all big nasty on me. I’m just putting something out there based on interviews on WQAM. And Baldinger had some strong statements about Nolan, and he cited some other sources as well regarding Alex Smith.
But hey, maybe you’re 100% right. Only goes to prove a bad QB is albatross to the HC and more often than not a death sentence.
I would think that Bringing in Gruden as HC, Childress as OC, and retaining Nolan as DC, and making Sparano Special teams coach lol....
Would be the best possible scenario, because IMHO that set up would really gell well together, and would be a perfect group to get this party started!!
Well my problem is if we acquire Crowher how will that mesh with Nolan?
I would want a offensive minded guy like Gruden if we keep Nolan, and then go after Childress as OC, and hire Josh McFagels as our QB's coach, he is a good one.
It's so very telling what kind of job security Sparano has when our consensus on this board is either Cowher or Chucky is fine! Last year, the talk of Chucky coming to this team was met with such great skepticism that I never thought I'd read the things I'm reading now. I personally think Sparano's days are already numbered. Ross wants more attention and he wants a big name to go with all those big name fans/minority owners.
There IS a wildcard in this that I've only seen one person bring up:
Marty Schottenheimer.
He's been out of coaching since 2006. Could he be ready to come back? He'd be that big name we want, he's a winner, and he never won a Superbowl (I pointed out that no coach has ever won Superbowls with 2 teams).
Ross is and was a nerd who probably never watched a game of football, so it comes to no surpise that he doesn't have a clue.
Give me Gruden as HC, Josh Mcgagles as QB coach, Sparano as ST coach, and Childress as OC with Nolan staying our DC this team would be playoff bound year after year.
