It's all offense

Unlike some on this board I'm not willing to throw the whole team under the bus. We've performed reasonably well on defense and we've even seemed to pick it up on special teams. But week in and week out, aside from occasional flukes, we've stunk it up on O. It changes the whole game. We get out to a lead on Cleveland, suddenly Delhomme starts having to force the ball, they get under pressure. But even if it doesn't change anything for the D, 13 points! If we can't score more than 13 points against the Browns (or even the Bears), what business do we have thinking about playoffs?

We should have swallowed our hurt feelings and kept Cameron as OC during the last changeover. But now, Sparano needs to realize that if he doesn't fire Henning now, he and Henning will BOTH be fired once the season is over! He's not even doing HENNING any favors by keeping him around, let alone the team.

It's not just the play-calling. Actually Henning is partly right when he tries to deflect blame away to execution. But the fact is that poor execution comes from poor practice. We do NOT need more talent. We need the talent we have to do simple things: throw and catch passes, execute run blocking, carry out a coordinated attack. Football basics.

We are 28th out of 32 teams in points scored. That, folks, is the cellar. We are 9th in defense, 5th in yards allowed. Take away 2 or so points per game from special teams screwups and we're 5th on points too. You move that O up to a similar level, we are going deep in the playoffs -- ZERO changes on D required.

Stop with the "fire Sparano", "bring in Gruden", stop with the "draft more talent", stop even with the "get a good QB". Folks, look at the Jets, look at Baltimore. Sanchez, Flacco. And see Indy this year? Get a good OC in here, DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE, and we are good. End of story.

Maybe he would have rather done that then accept a
demotion from HC to OC *and* have to pick up stakes
and move after a year, to a cold climate? Who knows?
Doesn't matter. Point is, we need a new oC, not a new
HC or QB. If the ownership throws out the baby with
the bathwater at the end of this season, it's going to
be a long rebuilding decade..

I can't think of a specific situation, but I think it's happened with interim HCs moving back down to their original role.
