Magic Johnson and a possible L.A. NFL team

Well, Magic Johnson has just formed a partnership with AIG, the owners of the Staples Center (you might remember them from Michael Jackson's death) to bring a football team to Los Angeles.

A new stadium would be built in the area of the Staples Center.

Some of you might remember my post about certain LA politicians demanding that any team be located in the Coliseum- USC area.

This area, however, although about 20 blocks away, is much better. There would not be the fan concern as would be with a stadium either being the Coliseum or in that area.

It might be the Chargers, who, ironically, started out as the LA Chargers in the old American Football League and then moved to San Diego.

This is more than a hunch because AIG is rumored to have brought a percentage of the Chargers from the Spanos family. However Alex Spanos of the Chargers is denying that he is giving up control. Nonetheless, there has been no reported statement by him that the Chargers will not be moving to LA. Of course, he has made no statement that they will.

But in either case, it is clear that Magic Johnson plans to have or move an NFL Francise in or to Los Angeles.

It will fail. LA has always proven never to be a place for the NFL.

Just isn't. Hollywood has bigger and better things to do than the NFL.

That's not true at all.
LA is a great place for the NFL, and a goldmine for an ownership group that knows how to run a franchise.
One thing is for sure, if you play in socal, you better maintain playoff caliber entertainment. LA will not support a team that's all about a money grab and mediocracy.
But if a perennial contender is put in place in LA, the team and the NFL can start printing money. Just ask the Angels and Lakers.

Just to admit one of my mistakes before anyone else catches it, it is AEG, the entertainment group, not AIG, the insurance group that the government had to bail out.

RESPONSE: I can't figure out how the Clippers can get the high picks they get every year for being lousy and yet remain lousy year after year. BTW, that's something that can be thrown in the argument about us either having a mediocre season or having high draft choices.

Now, Blake, I think will be one of the best players since Magic or Bird and, in my guess, will surpass Shaquille. We'll see what they do with him.

I think the Clippers were planted there by the Lakers to draw a stark contrast between the teams. Having the Clippers there makes the Lakers feel good about themselves..even when they have a bad season. smoking smiley

The problem with this is the state cannot afford funding a new stadium and no organization is willing to foot the bill all by itself.
