Don Shula's great gift at coach was to be able to use the talent he had to the best of its ability. He had the flexibility, and brains, to go from a running style to a passing style to best use Csonka/Kiick/Morris and Marino/Clayton/Duper/Moore". It seems since Shula left we've gone to inflexible "system" coaches. JJ, Wanny, Saban, Cam, etc... and the OC's they brought in all came in with a "system" that they felt would win. The plan was to build the team around that "system". Sure, it HAS worked in very specific situations (JJ in Dallas), but the best solution is to go with what you have and draft BPA.
Now, the WORST of the bunch is our current OC. He's like the anti-Shula.
I honestly dont think that it is henning, i have seen him call some very offensive games where he lets it all hang out. They say that it start at the top and everyone takes on the personality of the coach. Dude think about how concervative out head coach is (no question) how do you think that effects henning's play calling or any new OC that you bring in. If we brought over mike martz do you think that we will be winging the ball all over the field? Well now that i think about it we will never bring him in cause Sparano is so concervative, he just wants to sit on the football the whole game and kick field goals. I dont think the problem is henning
The last game last year against the steelers we where down like 100 points in the 4th, when thigpen came in we looked like the saints. Why is that if henning sucks so bad? If you think about the dolphins we always seem to move the ball very well when other teams go up a touchdown or we are down by like 10. That is because we can be more aggressive. Now think about if the game is close or god forbid we are up by 3, we sit on the football... I think your beef is with sparano.
Henning constantly calls drive-killing plays that result in large chunks of negative yardage, even when we're moving the ball nicely.
He will let Ronnie and Ricky gash the opposing defense for 50 yards, and then call a double reverse which goes for a loss of 15. Then Henne has to try and convert 3rd and 15. At least Henne has the arm to give us a chance in those situations, but it will get worse with Pennington.
At this point, I'd prefer it if the Dolphins would simply go no-huddle for the rest of the year and let Pennington call the plays on the field.
If anyone is going to the next Dolphin game can you please take a FIRE HENNING sign with you to the game?
Or better yet create hundreds of them and hand them out in the parking lot to angry fans that have had enough of this horrid play-calling.
First of all nobody fires their OC in the middle of their season, it would result in Chaos. Plus I think Henning is a good OC, has been around a long, long time with lots of experience. There is nobody who could out coach him...
