This is what happens when you put $$$ over winning. Team lost $7.7 mill last year, one of only 2 NFL teams to lose money. They aren't gonna pay big money for back-ups. I know alot of you disagree with that opinion of mine, but the evidence is mounting.
This is the biggest evidence yet that either (a) we don't know what we are doing or (b) we are trying to save $ at the expense of winning. Probably both. I called this move weeks ago, but was hoping I was just being paranoid. But nope--who needs OL depth, anyway? So we start the cheaper, not as good player in Berger (who was our top backup G btw) over the more expensive Grove, and then cut Grove, leaving us with no depth at the C position, a weaker starter, and limited depth and flexibilty at the G position. And 3 days before the first game. I am really pissed.
We had the best offensive liine in the league last year and the following year we get rid of everyone but long and carey..STUPID! All they do is just sign cowboy castoff o lineman.
I dont really care about Ross's money or anything either, doesn't really bother me that they missed on yet another FA, my concern is team chemistry 3 days before the season opener. This absolutely 100% had to cause a shock wave thru the locker room. Like I said, hope they know what they're doing!
In an "un-capped year" we are the ONLY NFL team pinching pennies. It's amazing!
If you want to cut a vet and keep a kid because the kid might be better or has a brighter future and the vet is on his last legs that is one thing. I can live with that. BUT, that isn't the case here at all. This is a move all about $$$. Procter isn't better than Grove. This was a strict money move to cut payroll.
So, who's our backup Center now? NFL.COM lists Incognito as a Center. Does that mean HE shifts to Center if Berger goes down? Has he had ANY reps at Center this year with Henne? We could witness a disaster if Berger goes down in Buffalo. We know from his history that he hasn't been 100% healthy his whole career either.

Can someone post a team roster with salaries? I'd like to look over it and get an idea who may be cut next. Looks like, if you're paid like a starter but didn't break into the lineup, you're gone.

1. Grove came out of one of the preseason games injured.
2. Grove was our backup C. If he is called on to play, and he is injured and cannot play, that could spell disaster.
3. We signed Corey Proctor as a Backup. We know exactly what he can do, we know his health situation, and he knows our team. This was a good signing considering that Grove already came out of a pre-season game injured.
4. If Grove is injured, he won't be signed by anyone else in the next few weeks. It is a very smart move. We know the extent of his injury and can sign him down the line once roster spots inevitably open.
Now, if over the next two weeks, Grove goes and gets signed by another team (for real, not one of those signed by a division rival for a few days things), then I will grow concerned that this is all about money.
But for now, it seems like a crafty move by our FO.

Grove practiced all week and was healthy and ready to play

I wouldn't assume you have all the information here. The team may have deemed his performance sub par. He certainly was dropping like a stone on the depth chart.
If he is the player he once was, he will be signed by a team once he clears waivers. If he can pass a physical and stick with a team, then I'll believe this was about money. Otherwise, I'm not yet going with all this "money" hype.
stop saying he was "dropping like a stone." you make it sound like he was the 4th or 5th C and therefore useless. He was the #2 C--actually 1A, considering they were going back and forth as to who was going to start right up till last week, and now they cut him.

Why? Does it bother you that overnight he went from an elite starter to a backup? Or does it mean that you can't cry that this was all about money and bash the FO without any information?
This just happened. It was an unexpected move. But with the secrecy this organization has regarding players and injuries, nobody has the info. People should wait for all the facts before making conclusions.

Exactly. We just cut Proctor, so saying its the "money" makes zero sense.
Something happened over the past few days. Either the FO evaluated Grove at practice and realized that he isn't even 50%, or another injury has reared itself and the team decided he wasn't worth the risk going into the season. My bet is the latter. If Grove isn't injured, we'll see him playing for another team soon enough. If he is, we won't see him playing at all.
But I'm going to wait for all the facts before I go off and bash the team for making dumb decision as cost cutting moves.

Dropping like a stone? LOL LOL, losing a starting job the 1st week of September and being 2nd team is dropping like a sone?! LOL LOL, wow so dramatic by some of you people.

The timing can be explained that the "football people" and the "Money people" probably sat and did a final run through of the roster before week 1 begins and contracts are guarnteed. Got on the same page and saw they could save $13 mill with just 1 move. And it seems like the "money people" won out.
The Sun-Sentinel has the article up, the Fins saved $13 mill by making this move today. That was the logic behind it. IT was a pure money move

No more dramatic than latching onto one phrase and typing LOL ad-infinitum. That is kinda what you do when you have no facts to back up your point.
And your point - that the cut was all about money. Completely bogus at this time.
As for "dropping like a stone". The guy goes from elite center to battling for a backup position. That is dropping like a stone in my book.
LOL all you want, but right now you no nothing more than that Grove was cut.
When was Jake Groove ever an "elite" center? Seriously? In Oakland. You are so dramatic. How many Pro Bowls for Jake Grove in his career...answer: ZERO. how many All Pro's for Jake Grove....answer: ZERO!! Elite center...ha
I know what the Sun-Sentinel is reporting. Which is Jake Grove was cut over Money. And I will go with the Sun-Sentinel over you! Sorry!

Probably not. If $13M was on the table, they would have seen it a few weeks ago.

Because the newspaper reports a savings, you jump to a conclusion and start bashing the FO.
You are quick to hate. Honestly, if Grove is injured, this was a great move.

It wasn't official that Grove wasn't starting till Sunday-Monday. When it became official then the money people and the football people probably sat down again to do a final run-through (not uncommen) and came to this conclusion. These teams just don't guarntee anyones contract. They check, double check, and triple check.
Why are you so defensive about this? Seriously, anyone who is critical of one player cut and a front office move gets the rath of "DolfanMike"....who are you Jeff Ireland's cousin? Why are you drinking his bath water?

Exactly. 100% correct. "dropping like a stone".....oh the drama!

So, he is not an elite center, but he is paid like an elite center? And you wonder why he was cut? LOL!

They just reported what the team saved. Right now, that is the only fact anyone has. I guess you're running with it. That seems a bit foolish to me, particularly since Grove is constantly injured and apparently over-paid.
If it turns out that he is injured, you will certainly look like quite "negative" here. Though I'm sure if anyone reminds you of this down the line, you will get insulted and write a diatribe about how you are the most positive person on the board.

Wrath? LOL! You act as though I'm following you around. Hardly. I just don't agree this is a great move.
No, I'm just saying I don't think we can criticize yet. Honestly, I think this can be a very good move. Grove was over paid and often injured. If it turns out that he is injured again, this can be a very smart move.
