Clarification on intentional grounding

I thought there was a mistake made last night, but nobody else said anything about it, so I must be wrong. On a first and ten, the Jags QB rolled to his right, and just before Charlie Anderson tackled him, he threw the ball away. The ref threw the flag and clearly stated,"Intentional grounding! Loss of down!" Since the first down play was over and was the cause of the penalty, shouldn't they have lost second down and gone on to 3rd and and whatever(is it a ten yard penalty?) at that point? That's not what happened, they played second down. Where was the loss of down? Surely first down can't be considered the lost down in that situation? I'm confused.

It was the correct call Rick. Loss of down means that you now go to 2nd down with the lost yardage,,,,

A non loss of down would mean it would revert back to 1st down.

loss of down mean you don't get to do the down over. intentional grounding is supposed to put the offense in the same position they'd be as if there'd been a sack.

Based on that logic where would they go if it was 3rd down? There is no 5th down.
