Tell me why we did not get a tight end in this draft ? I think the offense could have used a few players also ! Correct me if I am wrong, aren't the fins offense ranked like 17th ?
Defense was the pressing need for us...there also were no real gems at the TE position in this draft. There were some good guys but no gems. Besides we have a couple of serviceable guys on the roster already.
It's very early but I'd guess that playmakers (WR, RB, TE, FS, SS, LB, DE) will be the main focus of the 2011 draft.
I hope so anyway, because the foundation seems to be pretty well laid.
i agree that WR, TE, RB, S, OLB will be the focus. possibly NT too if Starks doesnt work out there. it will also depend on how players develop. future looks bright tho.
Kory Sperry had a very good college career as a receiving threat. We picked him up during the season, so he had to pick up things without having the benefit of going through our OTAs and training camp. He may take a big stept up this year. And we spent a 5th rd pick on John Nalbone last year, a guy with good size and speed, but from a tiny school. It's not a surprise that he didn't make an impact as a rookie. But, maybe the coaching staff feels a lot better about those two guys than we know. And David Martin is available in free agency, if they can mend fences with him.

Offense added Brandon Marshall. Top 5 WR in the entire league. Your starting QB is no longer a "rookie". You have your starting RB back as well. Plus you upgraded BOTH guard positions on the oline
On defense you lost 3 starters at LB. Had to not only replace them but their back-ups as well!

I'm all for re-signing Martin. I'm just curious why no other team has shown interest in him. Is he waiting for Miami only? Has he not worked out since his injury?

RESPONSE: AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN WITH BRANDON MARSHALL...Like he is the cure to both the common cold and the lack of world peace.
What the hell does he have to do with tight end??????????

You didn't read the post I was responding to where he talks about adding players to the offense and the offensive ranking, not just the tight end. Don't be a troll. Don't de-rail every thread
I think it's funny that everyone says we need a stretch the filed TE like David Martin but no one discusses resigning him, this is the first thread I've seen making that point. It's weird he is still out there, I thought the deal was it was immediately perceived to be a mistake to put him on IR for the year when he had an injury that would only take a month or so to heal. When we cut him, I thought the thinking was it was a "favor" to him so he could sign with someone else. But he's still out there, so maybe the injury is more serious that described? Anyway, I agree we should sign him if he'd come back and he's healthy. He was really good a few years back.

What the hell are you talking about???? Seriously you are all over the map
As much as I wanted Fasano dead last year, especially after the drop in the Indy game, I realize he's a decent Tight End. Haynos is another story. I think Fasano just had a bad year last year, and he deserves the opportunity to rebound. Also, with players like the TE from florida being considered one of the TOP talent in this draft, it shows how shallow the position actually was this year. I think next year's FA market and draft will be a much better time to act on that particular need.
As for David Martin, I don't recall him setting the field on fire when he was here years ago. In fact, I don't think I'd start him over Fasano at this point.

good point phinsfan. . . i didnt think about that. we will have to find a gem i guess. lol
Back to the question ... though sprinkled between the banter three pieces to the question.
1. Fasano and martin both have potential to be a threat at TE.
2. Minus the drama (banter above) ... whether it is Marshall or any other effective WR ... the passing game makes a huge difference on the TE being open and an effective weapon.
- Ginn just couldn't do it.
- Good play action, good wr success, makes for effective TE play
- Look at teams that do it well and have productive TE's (dallas others)
3. Bottom line, lkike the saftey position, TE was less of a gap than other areas, and we may see some acquisitions in the psot draft Free agency and post camp fre agency periods.
I think the reason Mike keeps mentioning the Marshall acquisition repeatedly is because he changes our entire offense from top to bottom, across the board. Marshall is one of those few players in the NFL that makes everyone around them better, simply by being present. Our QB will look better, our other receivers will look better, and our tight ends will look better because of his presence on our offensive unit. When someone has that kind of impact on your team, he bears notice in most topics about said offense. In my opinion, Marshall turns Fasano from a C grade tight end in to a B- tight end. In all things offense related, the front office now takes this into consideration. Once we signed him, the entire offense was probably reevaluated, and our draft and free agent signings were structured based on that evaluation. Hope this helps.
Marshall changes EVERYTHING! Marshall is a WR who has had 100 receptions 3 years in a row. A guy who will draw a double team. A guy who can get YAC. Miami hasn't had a guy like that in over 10 maybe 15 years! H
e is gonna remove the saftey from the box, opening up running lanes for Ronnie and Ricky. He is gonna give Fasano 1-on-1 with linebackers now and not safteys. He is gonna get Ronnie in the flat vs slow footed linebackers.
The only WR's in the entire league in the same conversation with Brandon Marshall are Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald. That's it!!! Marshall is such an elite talent I think some Miami fans don't realize what they have in him. Marshall's numbers the first 4 years of his career are on par and in some instances better than Jerry Rice's!! The numbers don't lie!
If they don't rate the TE any better than the guys they have, or much better than the types of guys who will get cut during training camp, then why blow the draft choices.
The Brandon Marshall acquisition is part of the draft. The Dolphins gave up their second best draft choice this year to get him! It necessitated trading down to make up the lost choice. Instead of Dez Bryant we got Odrick plus Marshall, essentially.
