Smiley situation

We do all but announce we are trading Smiley and then dont trade him. Why would we tell him to stay away from offseason workouts because he is about to be traded. Then nothing happens? It just seems like a weird scenario for a guy like Smiley, who played well when healthy and is a guy liked and respected in the locker room. I understand that the inuries are why we want to get rid of him but why handle it this way, and then do nothing. You figure you put him up on the trade market and see what happens, if a team makes an offer you like, you thank him for his services and tell him good luck. But by what we have done it seems like it has lessened his value in trade, for our hand is exposed we want him out of here.

I ask if teams know a player is not in your plans why would they trade for him? The answer is most won't unless he really fits a need, and I don't really see a team parting with a draft pick for an older oft injured offensive lineman. It may be best that we cut our losses before this drags out way to long.

I said it when they told him to stay away from camp that this was going to tank his value. everyone knows we want him off the team and will cut him if we can't deal him, so why would any team give up more than a 6th or 7th for this guy? in that case we should keep him--at best smiley is our best guard, at worst he'd still give excellent depth along with incognito, thomas, and berger

problem is after they told him to stay away you can't bring him back now. He would be pissed and probably a lockeroom cancer. Just human nature. Doesn't make him a bad guy but its clear they don't want him and if they said......ok, ok just come back. He's gonna feel not wanted.

The brass is not stupid what would be the point to purposely piss Smiley off before we got value for him in a trade. I would contend their are things going on behind the scenes that we are not privy too.

I agree, we placed ourselves in a no win situation, that all we might get is a mercy pick from somebody, to prevent their rival from picking him up

I wouldn't be surprised to see a draft day trade, maybe we give someone Smiley and our 5th to get someones low 3rd or high 4th, something along those lines. Someone that needs O-line help and can't address it early will make a move for a proven starter and not have to get into a bidding war.

The guy is damaged goods. If we got a 6th or a 7th for him I would just take it and move on. He was another free agent bust

The Dolphins didn't give anything away with what they did. They have Justin Smiley on the trade block. That means they've called a lot of teams and told them he was available in a trade. So, by telling Smiley that he was being traded, they didn't divulge anything that all the other teams didn't already know.

I'm guessing one team told Miami we will give ya a 6th or a 5th for him weeks ago. The Dolphins said he's yours if we don't get any other offers. So they floated they were taking offers for him. And if they don't, they go back to Team "X" and say ok he's yours for the 6th or 5th or whatever.

I wouldn't call Smiley a free agent bust, he bridged the gap to where we could start drafting our own young talent, and I think he helped Long develop alot. Wilford was a FA bust

5 year-$25 mil contract. $9 mill signing bonus.

And in 2 years he has played 24 games and about half of those he has been healthy for.

That is a free agent bust!!

I think Mike is right. I think they have one or two deals in place for Smiley, offers that they know they will accept if nothing better pops up. They told Smiley they were trading him, not that they were trying to trade him. I think they already have it lined up, and are waiting to see if some team is willing to come up with a better offer.

If we get that I'll be smiling (no pun intended)! The toughest positions to fill on the O-Line are the tackles and the Center. OG's are usually replaceable is if the rest of your line is solid. We got a 5th for our #9 pick a few years ago. Getting a 4th for Smiley would be awesome!

I'm guessing a HUGE trade envolving 3 teams is in the works! Personaly I think Smiley when healthy is a top 10 guard in the league, worthy of 3rd round pick. I wouldnt take anything less than a 4th.

Smiley is NEVER healthy and won't be 100% healthy ever again. His shoulder is shot. He now has a bum ankle. He is damaged goods, thats why they want him gone.

If we get a 6th for him then pull the triger and be done with him. If we get a 5th, even better!

I agree. The only other alternative would be to restructure his contract and keep him as a backup.

He won't want to be a back-up for Miami after the way we have treated him. Going to the press and telling him not to show up! We can have told him not to show up and kept it quiet. We embarassed him

I suppose so. That's one thing I haven't liked about this regime. They're cut-throat about the way they treat players, including vets that have a history with the team. They did it with Zach and JT.
