This guy has a future in the WWE after he retires!!
Man, the front office is just not satisfied with what we have at right guard. I thought Donald Thomas was supposed to be this big revelation, and then quietly, we start sitting him in favor of Gardner (I believe it was) for portions of the game. We hear Thomas can't block well on the move and suddenly he isn't in the starting line up some games. Gardner on the other hand begins to impress and between the two of them, we seem to have a fairly talented rotation at RG. Now we sign this guy? Is he going to play LG or did we really add another RG to our confusing rotation there?
I like the move. He's started every game he's played, so we added a young OG starter for little risk and money. His character concerns are actually not that big a deal--toned down a shade, on field aggression and nastiness are excellent traits in an OL. Now we can use Garner stictly as a backup OT, with OGs being Smiley, Thomas, and Incognito, and Burger. That's pretty good starters and depth right there. Add to that our Pro Bowl LT and Carey (who's good not great) and we've got a solid OL for years to come.

I think injuries played a big part of that. Also, it was basically his rookie season.

Why does this signing mean they are not satisfied with the starters? You just made that up.
I didn't make anything up.
Relax, I was just hypothesizing about what I thought may have prompted this signing. To me, it looked like they weren't happy with our situation at RG. So that's how I was interpreting the move, with surprise and confusion about what it may have meant about our starters. In fact, your point is well taken about the signing being more about depth than scrapping our starters, it being a one year deal and all.
Don't know how anyone could not see us having a depth need after the game last year where we had one backup playing 4 different positions in one game (Losing a guard and 2 centers).
A good move, cheap risk reward.
If his "I'm gonna change story" holds any truth we may get a guy who can contribute without the baggage.
Worth a chance and thus the reason he only got a 1 year deal. They'll know in time to re-sign him if they like what they see.
That's right, the mess of injuries that had us playing musical lineman still didn't stop Ricky from firing off over 100 yards on the ground that night!
