Plus they won EVERY playoff game on the road. Back then there was no homefield advantage or anything of the sort. It was on a rotation.

So to go unbeaten, then win all your playoff games on the road.

72 was the best season for sure.

But as for the actual super bowl game, our team from the '73 season was even better. Garo almost blew the game in SBVII. But we absolutely obliterated the Vikings in SBVIII from start to finish; they had NO chance throughout the entire game-and it was AWESOME to watch!

I tend to agree with you, except for one point: If Garo doesn't screw that play up, the Redskins don't come close to scoring. The No-Names just obliterated the Redskins offense.

If, indeed. And if he makes that kick, the score is 17-0, super bowl shoutout, the score 17-0 and the season record 17-0

Not to mention it would have been the ONLY Superbowl shutout EVER!

Would have been poetic justice.

I'm a tad jealous of you older folks who lived through the glory years. O what I would give for a super bowl during my lifetime sad smiley

Know what the best part of that '73 season was? The way the Phins walked through the playoffs and SB with total domination. So much so that the league changed the rules to favor the offense and passing game. The no-names put a real hurt on the Bengals and Ken Anderson with the bump and run. Jake Scott and Dick Anderson, Nick and Swift, kept the receivers off their game totally.

Remember how freaking good the Vikings were? Purple People Eaters were eaten up by our OL. Kuch should be in the hall for that game alone.

Well, I do believe we are close once again. Shore up that defense and we will be there.smileys with beer

it's pretty sad that after yet another superbowl where we didn't even sniff getting in, we need to talk some more about something that happened almost 40 years ago

think of all the teams that were laughingstocks the last time we were any good in the 80s--saints, cardinals, bucs, colts. they've all won SBs except the cardinals, who made it last year and came close again. meanwhile we're still talking about marino.

I'd like some football memories that didn't happen when I was in elementary school and middle school, or before I was born.

I Couldn't agree more berkeley. It's been way too long. However, for the first time since the 80s we have something going. We are close, very close. Good draft and pick up a few. A new DC with a proven track record. We're close.thumbs up

I urge anyone to watch the NFL Films Super Bowl VIII highlights. When you see what our o-line did to Carl Eller, Alan Page, and Jim Marshall, it was just incredible. And I think Kooch was doing it with a broken arm.

How many Hall of Famers played in that game? I wonder if that is a record. I think we have 6 off that team. The Vikings I believe 3.
I don't have time to look it up.

All I remember about SBVIII was everyone saying "watch out for the Purple People Eaters" because they *almost* upset our perfect record the season before.

And "watch out for Tarkenton, he can scramble his way out of any jam"

Leon is right, Kooch & company executed a perfect mix of traps and in-your face strength blocking (this is back when linemen could NOT use their hands extended away from their bodies or else it was a penalty).

We ground out the clock so well by running that Griese only needed to throw the ball a handful of times during the entire game.

Yes it's sad that we have to look that far backward to recall glory, but history is important stuff. We've waited far too long to experience it again....it's our time next year guys!!!

RESPONSE: Actually, Leon, I do not have such a generous interpretation of what berkeley was getting at as you.
