Draft Day NIGHTMARES past

Nobody ever talks about when JIMMY JOHNSON traded down because he 'thought' RANDY MOSS would be off the board. We traded down and MINNESOTA takes him... what might have been?

Hey, he got Larry Shannon instead. And remember, he was just as big, faster, and didn't have the baggage that Moss had, at least according to JJ. I'll never forget that one preseason catch he had for us.

Just for fun...to further criticize Wanny, Speilman, Cam and Saban and their personnel moves, lets go back to 2001 and see what our roster could have looked like....

Aside from all the trading JJ did in 1998 to pass on Moss and take John Avery....Yikes. We lost our 2000 1st rounder to Carolina for their 2nd round pick. There was not a lot of talent before our 2nd round pick of Todd Wade (in 2000) but we could have gotten Lav Coles or Darrell Jackson with that pick.

So starting in 2001 and the Jammar Fletcher fiasco, we could have had Drew Brees which would have been a cornerstone to our team for the next 10-15 years. Instead of Chris Chambers we could have had Steve Smith (Car). We also traded away our 2002 2nd rounder to move up and take Travis Minor or Morlon Greenwood (can't remember)

2002: We gave up two 1st rounders and swapped 4ths for Ricky Williams. So we didn't have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd in 02. We could have had......
#25 Andre Gurode
#58 Brian Westbrook
#90 Chris Hope

2003:
#18 Nnamdi Asomugha
#49 (Eddie Moore) Jason Witten
#78 (traded a 2004 2nd for Wade Smith) Terrence McGee
#87 (Taylor Whitley) Bradie James or Robert Mathis

2004: We gave up a 4th rounder to move up one spot for Vernon Carey. We traded our 2nd to NE for a 3rd rounder (56). We traded down again with If we stayed put we could have had...

#20 Vince Wilfork
#56 Darnell Dockett
#87 Chris Cooley
#102 (Will Poole) Jericho Cotchery

2005 We traded away a 2nd rounder (35) for AJ Feely, a 3rd rounder for Lamar Gordon to STL. We would have already had Brian Westbrook so we don't really need Ronnie Brown.

DeMarcus Ware, Shawn Merrimen, Roddy White, Heath Miller, Aaron Rodgers
are all available but we go with....
#2 DeMarcus Ware
#35 Lofa Tatupu
#46 (Matt Roth) Vincent Jackson
#66 (Lamar Gordon) FS Oshiomogho Atogwe
#70 (Channing Crowder) Jason Brown
#104 (Travis Daniels) Ray Willis T

2006: traded a 2nd rounder (48) to Minn for Daunte.
#16 (Jason Allen) DeMeco Ryans
#48 Maurice Jones Drew
#82 (Derek Hagan) Jahri Evans
#114 (Joe Toledo) Brandon Marshall

2007:

#9 (Ted Ginn) Darrell Revis
#40 (John Beck) Ryan Kahlil
#60 (Sampson Satele) Steve Breaston

So our depth chart could look like...

QB Drew Brees
RB Brian Westbrook
RB Maurice Jones Drew
FB Lousaka Polite
WR Brandon Marshall, Steve Breaston, Jericho Cotchery
WR Steve Smith, Vincent Jackson
TE Jason Witten, Chris Cooley
OT Jake Long
OG Ryan Kahlil, Jahri Evans
C Jason Brown
OG Andre Gurode
OT Ray Willis

LDE Randy Starks
NT Vince Wilfork
RDE Darnell Dockett
LOLB Cameron Wake
LILB Lofa Tatupu
RILB DeMeco Ryans
ROLB DeMarcus Ware
SCB Darrell Revis, Vontae Davis
SS Chris Hope
WCB Nnamdi Asomugha, Sean Smith
FS Oshiomogho Atogwe
Nickel CB/KR/PR Terrence McGee

A guy can dream anyway!

yes but the year we traded our first to carolina for a 2d we drafted surtain with the second so you can't fault that one

the trade down year where we took avery--I never heard of a team before or since trading down BEFORE the draft even started. if not for the fact that due to the trade we were not actually on the board when moss was drafted we'd be talking about passing on moss to this day. drafting avery and that year was just salt in the wound. don't forget with the pick we traded in the first i think GB got vonnie holiday (can't beleive I remember this)

That was a good move. The 2000 draft was pathetic. Hardly anyone left in the NFL from that entire draft. Especially from 23 on down where we would have picked....some late round gems like Adalius Thomas 186, Tom Brady 199, Dhani Jones 177, Neil Rackers 169, Marc Bulger 168, Sammy Morris 156, KGB 149, Shane Lechler 142, Darrel Jackson 80, Lav Coles 78.

I might take Tom Brady over Pat Surtain though. smiling smiley

Actually in 2000 I would have killed for a WR like Coles or Jackson.

Of course, if you go back and change our draft in 2002,etc., then we probably would have had lower draft picks from that point forward. We certainly would NOT have had the #2 pick in 2005 or the #12 in 2007.

The guy that really was a downer for me was John "I run from trouble" Avery. Hmmmmm. Come to think of it, he sounds a lot like Ginn. Real quick and real afraid. Hello sidelines.

Arrrrrghhhhhh.

If we could trade our #12 for NE's 2nd round pair I would do it, in a second.

A #12 pick for 2 2nd rounders..I'm not sure that works out value-wise. I think a lower-round 1st and a 2nd would make more sense.

I don't know why you say that. I hear he did really well in Canada, we must have missed something.

RESPONSE: This puzzles me. Regardless of what one may think about Ginn's catching ability, his intelligence, etc., I've never seen his courage questioned.confused smiley

ChyrenB,

Actually, I don't have a question about his intelligence. I also suspect that his catching ability is somewhat reduced by his fear. Heck, I'd be afraid of hearing footsteps if I was out their too. I think it's hard to appreciate how hard the NFL season wears down players.

I thought this was common knowledge about Ginn. I don't know how many reporters have written about this.

Are you kidding me????
