The biggest mistake was on draft day. Wanny had Brees on the board. Everybody talked about how fortunate we were that our guy slipped down to us...it was a no-brainer.
that was the problem. Wanny had no brain.
He selected Jamar Fletcher....I threw my remote against the wall in disgust.
He could have had Brees and Chambers in the same draft. Instead we gave up several 2nd round draft picks over the next several seasons looking for a QB. Feeley, Culpepper, Beck,Henne and even White all because we lacked a long term QB.
The way I remember it was in 2000 the Chargers were 1-15. The Dolphins were 11-5 and a playoff team with 7 PRo Bowlers. Mike Riley was fired and Marty Shot was brought in for 2001 when they drafted Brees.
It was Jay Feidler's 1st year and he had a so-so season. Brees could have been groomed for a few years. We finished 11-5 in 2001 and Jay got hurt in 02 with Lucas coming in so if we had drafted Brees, he may have come in at that time.
Brees showed enough to know that he had talent. He beat out Flutie in 2002 but was still raw and Flutie got the job back. SD was still not a very good team in 03 but turned it around in 04 when Miami was struggling with AJ Feely, Feidler and Rosenfels at 4-12.
Not even Wannstedt is stupid enough to think that Brees didnt show more than any of Miami's former QB's.
Brees would have been coming to a much more talented team than what he had to work with in SD in 02. Of course Wanny would have earned a few more years and eventually sunk the team into the depths of the NFL with the other bad moves but....

There's the clincher. Not drafting Brees may have been the best thing that ever happened to our franchise.
Hehe, again, I was referring to the Brees/Culpepper situation. Wanny did enough damage to this team while he was here, anymore would have been disastrous. Who's going to be starting this year, any guesses? It's a little russian roulette every year at the qb position, guess we'll see.
Drew Brees was let go in San Diego because he struggled and they drafted Philip Rivers. If he was all peaches and cream in SD he would still be the QB there. He didnt really blossom until his final season in SD and by that time it was too late, they had already invested too much into Rivers.
What Im trying to say, is this:
Our mistake wasnt not drafting Brees, because he could have struggled here and we could have let him go just like SD did. Our mistake was not picking him up as a FA and signing Hopepper instead.
