For what it's worth, a new DC is a breath of fresh air.
I for one thought young the talent we got at Cbs was squandered. despite their being new the schemes left em out there on an island with little pass pressure.
Hopefully some fresh coaching and a couple of additions will bering a different story next year.
i'm getting really tired of giving up 1st downs on 3rd and long.
I'm happy with this hire. First of all, kind of nice to have a coordinator under the age of 70.... Secondly, the guy is very accomplished and has coached some very good players. He is completely versed in running a 3-4 defense. All things point to his being a significant upgrade over Pasqualoni.
Mike I realize we need some better players but you do realize that Nolan took Denvers D from like #26 last year to #7 this year. That kind of turnaround HAS to have something to do with the coach

Yeah and they added about 4 or 5 new starters to that unit as well. Andre Goodmen, Renaldo Hill, Vonnie Holliday just to name 3 guys from our defense!! It's all about players at the end of the day. Coaches are good and they sure as heck help, but players make plays.
What makes me happy about it is he's clearly an upgrade over Pasqualoni. I also like the fact that the decision was made to replace a coordinator who wasn't getting the job done. I'm old enough to remember the stench that was Tom Olivadotti... and Chuck Studley.

Channing Crowder plays too upright, takes bad angles...he's had lot's of time to fix it...Nolan won't wave a wand and turn him into Ray Lewis.
That being said....there were games that we were in...that we lost...and our D played a base defense when the game was on the line.
Pasqualoni was fired before they had a replacement...which meant...he was ineffective and they would rather promote Bowles than roll with Pasqualoni again.
Nolan has a history of 'turning around' weak D's. That is what we need.
A new scheme, using the talent we have here will bring improvements...and opposing teams will study film and break it down...and that's where NEW TALENT has to bridge the gap. A new system with some new young blood will give us a longer period of improved play than either would alone.
I don't think our D is really that far off. The good players as I see it are
Bell
Taylor
Ferguson
Smith
Davis
Wake
Porter ( who might be gone soon )
That is not a bad group to work with. Add somebody in the middle and at NT through FA and the draft and we might be a little scary next season. Atleast this regime is moving us in a direction as oppose to all the others we have had who seemed to "rebuild" every year.

Not to mention that it was the first year after transitioning from a 4-3!
He coached a defense in Baltimore that was argued as the best in the history of the league. No we don't have Ray Lewis but we did drop from 15 to 25 in a years span. We lost two or three key starters to injury which is also to blame but the sky is not falling. (we lost 6 starters to IR not including Cobbs)
He also turned 5'11 248 pound Elvis Dumerville into the leagues sack leader in a years time and had a rag tag group to form the front 7.
Miami's front 7 talent is better than what Denver had to work with last year.
LDE, Ryan McBean 6'5 297
NT, Ron Fields 6'2 213
RDE, Kenny Peterson & Vonnie Holliday
LOLB, Mario Haggan 6'3 267
LILB, Andra Davis 6'1 250
RILB, DJ Williams 6'1 242
ROLB, Elvis and rookie Robert Ayers
The difference is in the secondary where they had Goodman and Hill from Miami to pair with two veteran Pro Bowlers....Brian Dawkins and Champ Bailey! Although they did break down at the end of the year.
It will be interesting to see what Ireland does with our secondary this year.
Can Will Allen come back and start?
Can Vontae and Smith improve? (yes)
Do we keep Wilson? Can Clemons surplant him? Do we try again with Atogwe or Nick Collins as FA's?
Do we keep Bell or release him and move Wilson to SS? He did not play as well last year as he did in 08 and is soon to be 32.
Wish list
FA: Vince Wilfork NT, Casey Hampton NT, Nick Collins FS, Atogwe FS, Miles Austin WR, Vincent Jackson WR
Draft: Rolando McClain, Dan Williams, Arrelious Benn, Jason Pierre-Paul, Sergio Kindle
One thing to remember about Nolan. He has been a head coach or a Defensive coordinator for 16 NFL seasons. His teams have only been to the playoffs 3 times. The last time in 2003.
MikeO you started this thread, then like always you turn it negative. Is that to protect yourself from the possibility of looking stupid or just a bad attitude? GO MIKE NOLAN
He is great. I like the move. Compared to the rest of our options he is the bet of the bunch and the best possible hire we could have made. In that respect its smart.
With that said, some people on here make it seem like he can turn our turd players into pro bowlers. Some people are getting too carried away here. I mean people now have Cam Wake a guy who has done nothnig in the NFL thinking he will have 14 sacks next year. THAT IS GETTING CARRIED AWAY!!!!!
There is being happy with the move. Then there is being foolish like thinking Cam Wake will have 14+ sacks because Mike Nolan is here. If you can't see the difference I don't know what to tell ya
If they utilize him right and with another camp under his belt he could get 14 sacks Mike. Coaching and schemes can improve average players game's, it's been proven in the past. If you choose to be negative about everything I dont know what to tell ya

Im not negative but the Nolan is God and Wake will have 14 sacks is laughable on every level

Just an observation or a fact some people might not know I'm pointing out. And maybe after reading such fact some peoples "expectations" will come back down to earth and reality.
I'm just encouraged by the reports that Sparano wants a more attacking defensive scheme. And Nolan certainly knows how to do that. We allow opposing QBs way too much time in the pocket. That needs to change. Nolan needs some more talent to work with, but I think the philosophy is a step in the right direction.
I don't think it's all that laughable for Wake to get 14 sacks next season IF HE'S A STARTER. Look what he did in the very small amount of playing time he had.
