Pennington's Future -- QB/Coach

I hope the Dolphins' front office considers offering Pennington a position next year regardless of his physical situation. If he decides he wants to play again and he has the ability, I hope they offer him a position as (at a minimum) backup QB with the idea of transitioning him to a coaching position. It seems like Pennington's strength has always been his intelligence and leadership--both of which make him a perfect coach (and a backup the team could trust to avoid mistakes). If he doesn't want to play anymore, then I hope they at least offer him a coaching position.

It would be great if a reporter could get the Tuna's or Ireland's thoughts on this.

It's going to depend on whether Pennington wants to play again. I think it would be stupid for us NOT to offer him a position, but Pennington may feel his playing days aren't over. He knows he's starting material, there are certainly other teams that will sign him as their starting QB. If Pennington decides to retire, then I'm all for him as a QB coach. Heck, I could see him as an NFL head coach someday!

He will definitely be playing for some team next year.

His heart may tell him to play, but three operations on a throwing shoulder? That may be a little too much for his body to overcome to play on an elite level.

I hope he sticks around as a coach for us.

I wish him the best wherever and whatever he decides to do. He is a class act ad deserves all our gratitude for what he helped accomplish last year.

The Miami staff will find out this year if Pennington has coaching potential.

If he can groom henne into an effective QB it may indeed establish a coaching resume.

I tend to agree that he would like to play more, but that will depend on his physical condition & shoulder history.

I also agree that it his leadership and intelllect that make him a good QB more-so than his physical abilities. If he can add them to henne's arm skill, it may help the FINS a lot.

while i agree that his heart will tell him he can still play (he is a qb after all) i think Chad is intelligent enough to know that he must listen to his body. What better place to begin his coaching career than for the GM (then coach) that drafted him. the sky is the limit for Pennington, still, and i hope the dolphins reward his knowledge of the game with a coaching opportunity. I only hope that we see the year's worth of mentoring Henne pay off, which i think we will.

Problem is he has already been helping Henne, especialy all last year, so if Henne isnt a solid starter, i dont think he ever will be, and Pennington will play for us next year, he is most likely to recieve arhoscopic surgery, rather than full out cut, and slash, which means LESS scar tissue.

I agree on Pennington becoming a coach...I think he'd be a good one.

I'll go ahead, and say he will take a pay cut next year, and come back to kick butt again.

He will be playing football again next season. If not with us, then with somebody else. He aint coaching.

I think we might be trading Henne next year, to STL, SEA, OR TAMPA.

Why is it funny? I have little confidence in Henne, and im not a big fan of his, untill he proves me otherwise. If he hass a mediocre year i would trade him, because i dont think we win more than 3 or 4 games this year, meaning we will be in line for a much better QB in the draft.
