No matter the outcome of this season, many changes have to happen during this off season.
Chris Greer - he has made some good draft picks and signings, but he has not focused on the team's immediate needs. Also, he has paid some players way too much money, that ended up hurting the team in its ability to go after players that could probably start.
McDaniel - I'm not so sure that he is on the hot seat, this season. He will probably get another season to turn things around. He will need a lot of help from Greer in getting the right players, both in the draft and FA. If and when Greer gets players for the Oline that can start right away, then McDaniel will have a shot to get back to doing what he does best.
Tua - he has to get his head on right and play against the "good" teams the way he does against the rest of the league. He can not do that alone. He needs a good OLine to protect him when he drops back, which will give his receivers time to get open down field. At the same time, a good OLine can open up holes for the running game, which of course will help Tua.
OLine - still hasn't been fixed. This will (probably) be Armstead's last season, He has struggled all season to stay on the field (as he always does), but he just can't be counted on. Kudos to him - he has been a warrior. Seems like Paul may do a good job in replacing him. The rest of the OLine....I don't know.
Defense - Miami's D is pretty good, but not good enough. They have a bad habit of playing well for the majority of the game (usually) but when it comes to crunch time, they fold. I'm not quite sure how that issue can be resolved. Phillips and Chubb - can they be counted on?
Anthony Weaver - he has done a good job, but it's a good bet he will get a HC job once the season ends. The Fins will have to really concentrate on getting a top notch DC to get the D playing up to the standards we all know they can. They will be losing some key players once the season is over, also, so much work to be done.
McDaniel needs to really look at his coaching staff and make changes wherever needed.
Ross has to give his top dogs the word - win or else?
Grier is the biggest problem for Miami. Not being able to keep talent like Gink is unacceptable. Should have kept Dan Campbell as the HC too. Sure he makes some boneheaded 4th down calls with Detroit but his team is motivated and look where they're at. Coulda, shoulda, woulda. Always the story with GM Grier.
Grier - We proved in 2023 we can win with the players he collects. Van Ginkel and Hunt were the 2 players I hated to lose in 2024 but that is the modern NFL. The defense was ranked #4 in total defense and in the top 10 in the other major categories. We were able to replace Van Ginkel and Wilkens.
I actually think Grier should not take so much input from McDaniel on player acquisition. I saw too much of McDaniel on the backup qb situation (Going into the season w/ Thompson and White) and not improving the oline (the 49'rs we don't have to pay olinemen because the qb gets the ball out quickly philosophy).
McDaniel imo is the problem. Too wet behind the ears to command the respect of the players, needs to focus on play calling and player development and as previously mentioned should be removed from player acquisition.
Let the front office bring in (and release) the players and you fit them in your system.
A sign that the Phins have not figured it out, the Bengals and Seahawks have fired coordinators this morning but how dare we fire our special teams coach.
This team is too 'sensitive' and that is a reflection of our head coach.
You can outfit and train a unit but the leader has to lead and fight it.
I agree with a lot of what you said, but the first paragraph is where we differ. I don't think an 11-6 record and 1st round disaster exit from the playoffs is proving we can win...at least not anywhere close to a 'consistently competing for championships' level.
He's been GM since 2016 but his real evaluation, in my opinion, is what he has done since the rebuild.
GOOD
- trades for draft pick acquisition - specifically the Tunsil one that turned into so much
- QB - I don't know that Tua has 'it' and health is a major concern, but I think he's a 'good' overall. Certainly could have done much worse.
- contracts - I don't love the position we're in right this moment, but I think he's done fairly well at this part of player acquisition/retention over the course of the past 6 yrs
BAD
- free agency - 2020 was a complete whiff with massive cap space available. Overall, it's like for every Brooks there's a Poyer...for every Campbell there's an OBJ.
- to your point, takes too much input from the coach. Leads to decisions that probably don't maximize the roster overall and sort of boxes the roster in. Some input helpful...being an order taker not as much. I think he's leaned toward being more of an order taker "this is what you want? I'll go get it". Or, in the case of Flores, get rid of Minkah.
- retention timing - when you draft good players, get ahead of their 2nd contract. I'm not saying we should retain or should have retained Wilkins, Hunt & Holland but their cost skyrocketed way past reasonable when you allowed them to become free agents.
UGLY
- draft misses. No expectation of 100%, but focusing on the really massively impactful ones:
- 2017 he chose Harris over Watt
- 2020 took Austin Jackson over Justin Jefferson, took both Noah Igbo and Robert Hunt over Jonathan Taylor
- 2021 he moved from 12 to 6 to get Waddle when he could have kept the 1st rounder it took and had Micah Parsons
- 2022 & 2023 - in spite of what's happening right now with Tyreek, I think that was a good use of the 2022 pick (though likely wouldn't have been done if Jefferson was our #1 WR). The 2023 pick was used to get Chubb and likely wouldn't have been if we had TJ Watt and Micah Parsons
- Health: even his good acquisitions you'd have to downgrade due to injuries that cause unavailability.
For me, the BAD & UGLY outweigh the GOOD in terms of player collection. The ugly draft misses obviously also have implications in other elements of player acquisition & retention. For instance, not only did Tyreek and Chubb cost us 1st rounders, but buckets of cash...that might have been used to retain Hunt or Wilkins.
And I actually think we could benefit from the GOOD he brings in more of an advisory/consultancy type role vs. full-blown GM role.

I hear you Stamper and partially agree/disagree. Im indifferent towards Grier coming or going but I do think a better coach would have gotten more out of these players in 2023 & 2024.

Excellent post and Soooooooo true.McD is the bigger issue. We will never beat the better teams with thus guy.
GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Yeah, I've often said that McD seems to get less out his talent than his predecessors. I think he's had MUCH better talent to work with than Flores, for instance. But his record against Flores' last 2 yrs (not holding 2019 against him with the tank) is only marginally better.
It's a good opportunity for clarification. My discontentedness with Grier's performance doesn't imply happiness with McDaniel's. Unfortunately, there's plenty of sub-optimal performance to go around.
They're both issues. Grier made excuse after excuse in their season ending presser. He made Tua the scapegoat for this season for not protecting himself which he called "totally unacceptable"
McD sounding like a politician giving 5 minute rampling answers while not answering the question.
It's not too late to fire them both. I get continuity but when you continually suck, does it really matter?
Grier had a treasure trove of picks and the most cap space in the league to rebuild this team. Now we enter year 7 of the "rebuild" needing to replace at least 11 players while over the cap. Grier is a complete loser and I'm shocked people still defend him.
He was right about tua. He injured himself going head first in the second game against the bills. Then he did it at least twice once again. How come he made sure in 2023 which was his contract year to stay healthy for 18 straight games? Once he got his guaranteed money, he didn't give a crap about this team and decided to play hero ball.
Tua is the main problem on this team and needs to be replace once his contract expires. We stuck with him until then. Now the other hip is no good.
Glass man is done.

“We’re at the point in our team where guys are firmly aware of the expectations, and if your actions continually lead to finable offenses that you’re telling me without words that you don’t want to be here. I think it’s very clear,” McDaniel said.
Awesome...unsurprisingly discipline had been an issue all season long and post-season he makes it "very clear".

Well, it took a while but we finally fired Crossman and (unfortunately) also Wes Welker. I was especially rooting for Welker but the numbers don't lie....our receiving corps has not been performing lately.
Yep while Im happy to see Crossman go I hate to see Welker go. I think Grier told McDaniel these guys gotta go. Its good in a way shows the position coaches that they are responsible for their guys.
If Hill is a problem its Welker's job to hold him responsible.
I remember a Phins game in the early 90's on NBC, the Phins had a screw up on defense and they showed Shula tearing Olivadotti (Tom, the DC) a new one. Olivadotti walks over and tears Joe Greene (the DLine coach) a new one. Joe Greene in turn walks over and tears his guys a new one. They showed this sequence after a commercial break and the announcer was explaining how screw ups are handled by the coaching staff.
We need this kind of discipline and accountability.
I take it back. McD and Greer are big issues......but the biggest is Ross himself because he doesnt see it. Just once id like to see him walk in a locker room and kick over a gatorade drink thingy......overturn a bunch of cups and tell them no more prime rib thursdays! Your getting McDonald's......he just asks his accountant how they did and charges 19.00 for a beer.......
