3rd QB Rule

I fully understand how the 3rd QB rule works, but what I don't understand is why would we really let it effect us?

Even if Miami really is grooming Pat White to be a QB there is no question that they will be using him in the Wildcat and probably some WR in base packages. I can't see how he will beat out Henne to be our future full time QB.

My question is, do they even truly need to list him as a QB? Do the rules state that a team must have 3 QBs identified, can't we just list two and not have an emergency QB?

I guess my point is, can't we just list him as a WR or RB or anything other than QB so that we can put him on the field whenever/wherever we choose and not have it effect our ability to use Henne and Pennington however and whenever we need to?

I think it's because if you list him as a WR or other, that takes up a roster spot.

if he's going to play the entire game anyway (which is hopefully in the team's plans), then it's not a big deal.

For this year though, while he's a rookie and we still have Pennington, there's speculation that he might be the emergency guy.

Why would that take up a roster spot? Is there a limit to the number of people you can list at a certain position? Normally a team keeps 3 QBs and 6 WRs. If we list 7 WRs and 2 QBs does it really matter? still 9 people either way.. just one of them (White) would be listed as WR but plays as a slash..

There's a limit to the total number of players a team can list as active for any given game. That's what I meant by roster spot.

Yes, I know that and do see your point. It would essentially put us one person down on game day I suppose, but would the availability of all three at any time Sparano wanted it offset that? hmmm..

Probably not, at this point. He'd probably want that extra spot on game day for a special teams player or a lineman.

Later on when Pennington is out of the picture, and White has developed more as a QB, then yeah.

I don't see the point of keeping White on the bench. Wasn't he drafted to run the wildcat? We're not going to save that until the 4th quarter. If PW is really all he's advertised to be, he'll play a good portion of each game.

The active roster consists of 47 players which can consist of any position you want. Then you may also list an emergency QB. If you decline to list an emergency QB and you want to play White then he must be counted among the 47. This will most likely affect your STs or your WRs.

I hate to say it, but I think they're more likely to have White as the inactive/emergency guy this year, because he has a lot to learn as an NFL QB. Training camp will tell though....and I hope I'm wrong because I want to see him play.

Hey, why not try White on special teams too? I still think the Wildcat can be a big part of our offense, and I'm not sure White would really beat out Henne for the #2 spot. So, option #2 sounds more reasonable to me.

A QB's ego can be a fragile thing. I'm not sure how Henne would ultimately react being pushed to #3 on the roster.

I have a feeling that White is going to be used for more than just the Wildcat plays. With all of this recent talk about NFL teams using the spread formation and playing "spread / option" football, I expect we'll see Pat White on the field for some of those plays as well. Hell, with White + Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, there's no reason we can't break out the Wishbone formation and run those option / pitchback plays from there. :-)

It'll be interesting to see if he's used on Special Teams at all, maybe as a returner or something.

My guess is that White will be active on Sundays, whether he's listed as a #2 QB or listed as a WR/RB/KR or whatever. <shrug />
